Q: 1. Does this have both the old and new mounting standard in it? Looking to use it on a Mac Pro 5,1 drive sled.

A: This drive only has two mounting holes on each side, which is the new standard, it is missing the old standard of having 3 holes on each side.

Q: 2. Is there an external case that this drive can be mounted in and then be hooked to a PC or Mac via Thunderbolt?

A: We do not currently carry an appropriate enclosure, but what you would need would be a 5.25" SAS (not SATA) enclosure that supports tape drives.

Q: 3. CAN THIS BE USED ON A WORKSTATION?

A: Yes, it will work fine, just as any other drive.

Q: 4. What's the difference between this model (B&H #SEST12000VN7) and the more expensive model (B&H #SEST12000VNA)? Neither one is from the PRO series. All the specs seem similar.

A: I think you are referring to BH # and not model numbers. So they are probably the same just BH may have had a different batch come in and thought it was not listed before or they need to sell it at a higher price since they paid more from the vendor

Q: 5. Will this Seagate 4TB IronWolf 5900 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD work properly in a Promise Pegasus 2 R8?

A: Yes, however if running RAID you should always match the drive types exactly. If running in JBOD this would be perfectly fine.

Q: 6. For video backup I can't use compression. What is the uncompressed capacity of LTO-8 tapes?

Q: 7. does it need separate power or will it work with a SATA to USB cable? I have a SATA cable for my internal SSDs I use for video and doesn't require external power.

A: An external power source or enclosure will be required to use this drive with a USB port, because a USB port will not be able to provide enough power to run the drive.

Q: 8. Can this read and retrieve data from LTO 6 tapes?

A: No, it can only read and write LT0-8 and LTO-7.

Q: 9. Is this a refurbished video card? Is this original (from Msi)?

A: You can attach the MTAPE-TB3-LTO8 drive to a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 Mac using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 adapter. The only requirement is that the Mac being running 10.12.6 or higher.

[1] Our small video agency recently upgraded our LTO drive to LTO-8 and started buying these tapes for our footage and project archives. The significant capacity increase with only marginal increase to cost per tape saves our company a lot of time and money. So far the tapes have been very reliable and performed well during archive and restoring. We will be buying plenty more in the future. 5

[LTO-9] I've purchased dozens of these and haven't had any issues to date. Works as expected & reliable. I'm using a mLogic mTape LTO-7 drive. The only minor quibble I have is that they don't come with any sort of label/sticker. 5

[18 TB] We purchased one of these units back in January, 2020 for use in a University audio/video recording setting. I believe we've already transferred over 150TB. There is a lot of relief when you know your master recordings are now backed up on something that lasts longer, is faster, closer and easier to deal with than stumbling and slow 'Cloud solutions' or having to shelve dozens of aging drives! We use YoYotta software with it. So far it has worked really well. The only issues we have had are with a LTO cart or two that had a problem and failed during the transfer process, not after. It is pretty darn fast and easy to hook up using thunderbolt. The Software is also great for adding metadata and sending emails to let you know it is finished once verified checks of the transferred data are complete. Because of 4K, file sizes are soaring ever higher, yet the mLogic LTO 8 is pretty darn fast and so good at 'retrieving' past recordings, I plan on buying one for my own personal use. As always, your mileage may vary. 5
