The 8 x 10", 25-count Foma RETROBROM 151 FB Glossy Paper 8x10 25 Sheetsfrom Foma RETROBROM 151 FB Glossy Paper 8x10 25 Sheetsis a customized black-and-white paper featuring silver bromide iodide emulsion. It's made on a thick, double-weight fiber-based (FB) baryta paper base and offers a rich halftone scale. It can be used for exposure or developing. It has a fine-grain and warm green-brown tone, and the paper base is colored in a light green-yellow tint.

The mid-level optical sensitivity of this paper allows contact copying and even enlarging to big formats. The specific warm tone makes this paper suitable for retro-style images, especially portrait photos but also for still life, landscape, structure and detail, abstraction, and other applications. It's also suitable for lith printing. The paper is produced in the Sp contrast grade.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. After pre-flashing, can I use it a few hours or days later? Or should it be used immediately?

A: There is no set time listed for storing pre flashed HARMAN technology Direct Positive Fiber Based (FB) Paper (Glossy, 4 x 5", 25 Sheets). As with all photographic materials, they do degrade over time - so the shorter the time frame, the better. Be sure to store all papers in a cool and dry environment.

Q: 2. This paper is 180gsm or 280 gsm?

A: The Fomatone MG Classic 131 VC FB Paper is 180 gsm.

Q: 3. If I were to use this in a pinhole camera what ISO setting would be appropriate?

A: When shooting pinhole, and using a light meter, set an ISO setting of 3-6. That will be a base.

Q: 4. Is this available in luster?

A: Unfortunately, this paper is currently available only in glossy and emulsion-in.

Q: 5. what safelight does this paper require?

A: According to the data sheet included with the Foma FOMABROM FB Grade 3 B&W Paper, under the "Safelighting" section, it states color of safety illumination is yellow, yellow-green, amber or orange colors are recommended. Regarding its high sensitivity the processed material has to be exposed to such illumination only for the time necessary for its processing. Length of exposure and a distance of the processed material from the illumination source should be tested. If you are looking for an amber safelight, the Delta 1 Brightlab OC-Amber Jumbo Safelight (25 Watt), B&H # DESLJOC, would be recommended for your usage needs.

Q: 6. Can I use Ilford WASHAID to shorten the rinse time from 1 hour? I'm using Ilford DEV, STP, & FIX.. in trays

A: Yes, Wash Aid will help reduce wash time with the Harman Direct Positive paper.

Q: 7. Can you leave this paper after exposing in the fridge for a period of time before developing? Not near a darkroom

A: You can hold off processing the HARMAN technology Direct Positive Fiber Based (FB) Paper (Glossy, 4 x 5", 25 Sheets). But do not do that for long times. It is best to process right away but you can wait a few days or so.

Q: 8. I heard that when this came out it did not fit into 4 x 5 film holders and had to be trimmed. Has this been corrected and it does fit or does it still need to be trimed?

A: Some people don't have issues and some do. It's probably a combination of different holders and a little bit of user error, hope nobody gets insulted. It seems that with some extra force the sheets should slide in. The best thing is to waste a sheet to see if the width, length or thickness is the culprit and adjust accordingly.

Q: 9. I am not sure I understand the unit : 66' . Is it 66 feet or inch ? Thanks

A: This is a roll of paper that is 24 inches wide by 66 feet long.

Q: 10. what type of safe light do I need with direct positive paper?

A: Compatible with Ortho (deep red) safelights.

[R9001] Love this paper. Used the FB grade 4 glossy.
Makes my photos pop and definitely am going to order more. Good alternative to Ilford Gallerie at a better price. I think the better price is because the cost of living in England compared to Chech Republic. Just a tad thinner than the Gallerie but still plenty thick enough.
Only used 25 sheets so far

[R9001] I do mostly lith printing with this paper. It responds very well to the lith developing process and it has a really nice warm tone.

[Negative] I have never read any reviews of this paper other than it liths well.

This is the only paper I have used in the past 20 years that reminds me of the old Portriga rapid, but since it is multi grade, I don't have to stock several grades, as I can achieve the correct contrast by changing filters.

Once I figured out the correct selenium paper dilution to tame the greenish cast, I rate it right up there with anything I have used since I started printing in the 1970's.

I do have one gripe about it- it is not quite as thick as some of the premium papers today, but the beautiful tones more than make up for that.

[Negative] This paper reminds me of the Agfa portriga I printed with in the 70's. It's warmtone and deep rich blacks are outstanding using ansco130 developer. I also found the paper base to have a certain toughness during processing.

[25x Sheet Paper] I've been printing everything on Ilford's MGFB Classic paper since it was released--another excellent paper. After reading some promising reviews of Fomabrom, I thought to give it a try.
Developed in LPD 1:3, Fomabrom renders slightly warm. It's a bit yellow, better than old MGFB, not as nice as untoned MGFBClassic. It sounds unappealing, but it's not. It's just not neutral.
Toned for 5 minutes in 1:30 selenium, the paper quickly cools to neutral. A really pure neutral silver tone. It tones better than MGFB. If you like toning, you'll love this paper. Blacks are surprisingly deep, and the print becomes dimensional in a way I haven't seen before.
The other distinctive characteristic of this paper is the way it handles highlight detail. High-key negatives are much easier to print than on MGFB. I'd say it has less contrast except that it prints at about the same grade as MGFB. Highlights are just easier to manage.
The downside is that midtones have less separation than MGFB. MGFB just seems to pop more in the mids.
It's an excellent paper to have on hand, especially for high-key negatives or images you intend to tone. Maybe more like the old Oriental variable-contrast paper than MGFB. At this time, the price also makes it an appealing general alternative to MGFB Classic.

[Glossy] I really enjoy using this paper. I did a test strip and noticed that it was very forgiving in terms of what was acceptable and in range for a good print. It is a little soft, maybe not as punchy as the Ilford alternative, but I also didn't use any filters. Its a glossy finish but not overkill. Prints curled a bit when dried face up and less when dried face down. I really like the results I got from this paper and happily rate it 5/5. I have posted some example prints.. photos taken using a sp500 and Takumar 55 f2, prints made using a Rodagon 80mm enlarging lens and intrepid enlarging kit.

[Warm] This is an outstanding graded photographic paper. This paper outshines any brand of variable contrast paper. Please continue making and selling this product.

[Fiber Base] I usually proof on Ilford Warmtone glossy, since the semi-matte is my first -choice enlarging paper. I got some Fomatone glossy when Ilford was temporarily unavailable a while back. Fomatone is slightly more than twice the speed of the Ilford, though in my developer 3 minutes gives me a fuller tone than 2. I have not yet testes it extensively, but I did find that with Ilford's 1 1/2 filter (my standard proofing grade), the Foma was about a half-grade more contrasty. I do not get as a high contrast with the upper filters on Foma as with Ilford, so I keep it for the lower cntrast end, where it performs beautifully. Since it tones differently from Ilford, it's a perfect second paper for me.
