Audio engineers and music producers looking for professional-grade studio reference monitoring headphones will be thrilled with the Sennheiser HD 400 PRO, a pair of open-back circumaural headphones designed for mixing and other pro audio applications. With a frequency response of 6 Hz to 38 kHz, these headphones provide clear reproduction of audio.

The dynamic drivers utilize a specialized polymer blend in its diaphragm as well as a high-powered magnet to drive the system. The damping system manages ventilation, which allows for deeper bass while mitigating the distortion that otherwise impacts clarity. The open earcups and angled transducers allow for a wide and transparent soundstage, recreating the optimal listening position found in high-end recording studios.

The lightweight HD 400 PRO sports velour earpads, which provide the ultimate comfort for long listening sessions. A single-ended, coiled cable with a 3.5mm plug provides you the freedom to operate. A straight cable and a 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter are also included.

A: Yes, the Sennheiser HD 490 PRO Professional Reference Open-Back Studio Headphones can be used for music listening. "Soundstage" is not a technical or measurable concept. [6 Hz to 38 kHz] It was time for a new pair of headphones, and I was looking for something affordable and comfortable. The Sennheiser 400 PRO Studio Reference Headphones are a great tool. These fit over my entire ear(great since I am suseptible to blackheads and sweat behind my ears) and are comfortable while working for extended periods. I am working on the final mixes of my most recent album, and these are helping me to accurately judge the balance and EQing of my songs even while working at modest volumns.

[Stereo] I have owned the HD 58x, HD 560s, and PC 38x from Sennheiser and of those, the only ones that were decently comfortable for my incredibly large head were the PC 38x. I loved the sound of all of them, but they were just not made for people like me. I was hesitant to buy these, but they have a completely different headband design, so I figured it was worth a shot. Plus I could always return them if it didn't work out.

I'm glad I gave it a try. While I do wish the headband had another click or two of adjustment, it seems to just barely get large enough for me. And they are by far the most comfortable Sennheiser headphones I have ever used. I almost forget that I am even wearing them after a while. The only slight complaint with comfort is that the very tips of my ears seem to touch the sides of the earcups even though these are supposedly deeper than others they make.

For the sound, it's really excellent. I prefer the producer pads for the extra bass; this gets me a bit more warmth than the other Sennheisers I mentioned, a more pleasing midrange than the 560s, and a nice, bright top end that is still smooth and not grating. Not much more I could ask for here. They also have excellent sound stage and imaging.

The only other slight complaint is the cable. The cable is fine, but the little coiled bit bounces around a bit and you can hear that in the left ear. It's a little annoying, but it's also a replaceable cable, so you could just get an aftermarket one instead.

While I am very happy with my purchase, I do also think these would be better priced. Still, I highly recommend them.

(I also posted this on Sweetwater, so no, this isn't a bot, I just like them enough to rate them multiple places)

[1.53 lb] Bought for an open air, expansive sound and wasn't disappointed. One of my most comfortable headphones (out of 12 sets). Love the colorway. I custom made a shorter cable, about 4'.

[Black] I was looking for a capable pro audio power amp for my Dali Euphonia MS5's when Avantone announced the release of their CLA-400. I will admit, MS5's are really audiophile grade speakers, so why drive them with a pro audio amp? My response is, why not? Most of the offerings in the pro audio market are active/fan cooled, very few if any convection cooled. And if there are any like QSC & Crown, they no longer make them. I did not want fan/active cooling. Furthermore, most are class D and I had already tried class D; not impressed despite all the gobs of power. No, not for me; NO class D! The Avantone Pro CLA-400 came at just the right time and I placed an order soon as I was convinced it was the amp to try. With this CLA-400, over 500 watts @ 4 ohms has really revealed what I knew my speakers were capable of! It's rather astounding how much more life they are breathing into the music! Solid tuneful and impactful bass, very wide and deep soundstage, very musical! There's no turning back for me; I am rather gobsmacked at the sheer musicality of my sound system. WOW! Just WOW!

[1/4" TRS] I've had Sennheiser headphones for a long time, I don't buy many pairs, but I do like how they sound and I use them for long sessions, both during work (unrelated to music or sound production) and for personal music listening at home. Since the split and sale of the consumer side of Sennheiser I've been wondering how the brand offerings will shake out. And since the handful of headphones I've had in the past generally reside in the $150 to $250 range the fact that range was sold off to another company gave me a bit of pause on where to get any new headphones I buy, the Pro line from Sennheiser themselves, or the consumer models from Sonova. I decided to try these new Pro line from Sennheiser themselves given the age (and ragged look) of an old headphone pair I'm retiring and I did have a bit of extra cash lying around so I decided to go for these HD 490 PRO's.

After about two weeks with them, I can say I like their feel on my head, their sound, their weight, and the cord. I do have a pair with individual left and right cords, but this single sided cord is very nice. The price seems a bit high for headphones and I realize these are getting into the 'professional' area so the price would probably reflect that fact. So it didn't actually surprise me, but most casual listeners or non audio production people like me probably don't need to splurge on them either. That said, no regrets and if I had the cash, I would buy them again.

The only minor thing that annoyed me about them was that on my older pairs the braille 'Left' mark that allows you to put them on correctly without looking at them is in the back on this pair whereas my older Sennheisers had it on the front of the ear cup. Again, I don't buy a ton of headphones so maybe there isn't any kind of set standard and I just happened to get two older models that had it on the front of the earcups. A very minor change, but something that I have to occasionally think about when putting them on.

[Black] I listen to classical music and acoustic modern jazzy music (97% instrumental). These headphones sound natural and feel comfortable on my head. If you like the K701 then these are much better. NOTE: They are not bassy; i.e. bass is neutral.

[6 Hz to 38 kHz] I had an older version of very much loved AKG reference headphones from the early '90s that were destroyed by my son... after many years of service, many of the plastic elements were held by mini bulldog clamps so good timing for an upgrade, thanks, son!

After listening to a lot of alternatives, many costlier, (although for the listening pleasure I have put cost on a low priority criteria scale) the K712 PRO was the right choice: better sound than my previous ones and still the same neutral yet accurate and true experience for my mostly classical and jazz listening. Paired with a SHIIT Bifrost DAC and Valhalla tube amp stack, every instrument is clearly distinct and spatially identifiable. You feel you are in the space with the musicians, be it in a studio or concert hall.

Also own a Grado PS500e - a warmer experience perhaps that I enjoy with a more "mobile" red Dragonfly DAC/Amp when working, but I find the AKG's neutrality better for the orchestral music I often listen to. And the comfort fit bears no comparison between them: I can wear the AKGs for hours - not so for the Grados

The open back was a must for me as I usually don't like (or need) to feel isolated. In the rare condition I need to withdraw from the surroundings I reluctantly use a Meze 99 classic walnut pair that match the comfort of the AKGs with an enjoyable sound stage but not close in accuracy to my preferred cans.

Minor detail: I replaced the velvet cushions with fabric covered AKG ones. Found the sound stage to be even more detailed.
The only criticism I would have is the elastic threads holding the headband. After a few years they show signs of fatigue and I don't know how easy it is to replace them. Not a big concern as the excellent comfort does not appear to be affected.

Headphone choice is a personal affair. Every ear is different, everyone's sound processing, taste and pleasure seeking is different. The K712 PRO are perfect for me.

[10.6 x 8 x 4.4"] I bought these 8 years ago an everytime I put them on I just smile and get all giddy. they sound so amazing. wish real life could sound this good haha but yeah if i had 1 downside id say for the money plastic anywhere isn't cool. but its not like i use them outside. by far best headphones i've ever heard and when playing some games the open back makes pin pointing foot steps in first person shooters almost fell like your cheating. 8 years now an i just put them on smiled again an looked them up to write this review. if you even thinking about them just do it and thank me later

[Open-Back] If you want real, clear and colorful sound then take K712. The only alternative is K701, but you get what you pay for. For a week I tested a lot of models of Shure, Audio-Technica, Sennhiser, Alesis (terrible ones), AKG. Important note: Be sure, Sennheiser HD600 has nothing to do with the High-Fidelity. Too much bass and treble.
