Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it really true that the essential usb cable is not included with the product?

A: The Plustek OpticFilm 135i Scanner does not include a USB cable. Plustek doesn't know if you need a USB-C or USB-A cable for your computer.

Q: 2. How does this compare to the Epson V850? I looking for a scanner for 6X7 negatives.

A: The image quality is better than that of the Epson, but the scanner is less versatile if you have other requirements (reflective scans, large format etc). For 135 and MF, it is excellent.

Q: 3. What improvements changed between the original version and this new release?

A: According to the manufacturer, compared to the original version, the new Plustek OpticFilm 120 Film Scanner has an entirely new sensor and upgraded, higher-quality circuitry when compared to its predecessor. Plustek has a new manufacturing process with stricter quality control, and the scanner's calibration has been adjusted for better overall performance and image quality.

Q: 4. How bad is this product? There are so many people complain about this scanner which is waste of money.

A: The software is its Achilles heel. Lack of lamp brightness and horrible frame selection hurts. Its sharper than Epson Flatbeds, but less colorful or dynamic as 120 size scans from Epson 4990 or V800. The holders are nice if film cut to 4 peices horz for plastic negative pages. Magnetic helps hold, but if film is short or too long the film can transport while being scanned. Software (possibly hardware) tends to crash a lot, too.

Q: 5. What is the output file? Is there an option for raw output

A: Yes you can scan to a DNG file which is a raw file. The scanner comes with SilverFast scanning software that allows you to save a file to different file formats. DNG is a raw format that can be imported into LightRoom or PhotoShop.

Q: 6. Are additional film carriers available for purchase?

A: We do not sell additonal holders for this model.

Q: 7. Wondering how sharp the 135i’s scans are? Especially panoramas. Can it deal with curling across the film? Any aftermarket sw?

A: The Plustek OpticFilm 135i Scanner is very sharp. By using a CCD sensor, it has good depth of focus plus the film holders help flatten and curvature of the film. The included software works well with the scanner. They are options such as Silverfast or VueScan too but those would cost extra.

Q: 8. Does this software work with both Mac and PC computers?

A: LaserSoft Imaging SilverFast SE 9 Software for Plustek OpticFilm 8200i Ai Scanner BH #LASPL21SE can be used with Windows and MacOS.

Q: 9. Is there a difference between this and flatbed scanners?

A: Both a film scanner and flatbed scanner operate using a light source and sensors that scan through the transparency. A dedicated film scanner utilizes a transmissive light source while a flatbed scanner uses a reflective light source. The result is greater density and clarity scanned from the transmissive light from a film scanner. Current higher quality flatbed scanners offer transparency and negative holders and often include an additional light source on the lid to mimic the transmissive light.

Q: 10. What’s the dynamic range of the scan?

A: The Plustek OpticFilm 135i Scanner has a DMax of 3.4D.

[Download] I had a little trouble at the beginning and had to install the program from the website vs the disc that was included. Once I figured that out things worked well. There is a learning curve. I appreciate the ability to adjust the images individually.

[Download] I have been using a Nikon Coolscan V since 2004, but it recently developed a weird problem that is outside the scope of this review. Since Nikon stopped supporting its film scanners around 2016, I decided to get this unit as a replacement. Based on my first 10 scans, it appears to be doing nicely. Advice for people still using film scanners-consider picking one of these up before the market dries up.

[Download] I had purchased this same unit about 3-4 years ago to purchase a flatbed scanner to do my 35mm & 120mm films. Sorry I sold the Plustek. It's so easy to use, small and light weight for storage and travel. If your doing more 35mm black & white this is the unit. Color work, I would have chosen the 8200. But when I shot 35mm film, it's mostly B&W. Very happy with the product, priced right, learning curve to use is fast....

[Download] I use Vue Scan instead of the Silverfast that came with it and it works very well.  Not superfast but fast enough.  I highly recommend this scanner.
