Q: 1. Can this product scan Fuji single 8?

A: Yes, Kodak REELS Film Digitizer for 8mm and Super 8 Film works with Super 8 film.

Q: 2. Can this be developed like b&w film at home ? How can I turn it digital at home ?

A: Hi MonicaYeah.I use a paterson tank, and just pull it out of the canister in arm lengths .I then just sort of wrap it into the tank.My work is quite grungy so i don't mind if I lose a frame or two if it's sticks or kinks.I then process in ID-11 using the digital truth dev chart time.It comes out pretty grainy but i like that....Then i bought a wolverine super 8 transfer machine from B&H and it transfers it to an AVi file.

Q: 3. At what speed does this digitize?

A: The following unit reads a 8.08-megapixel sensor automatically at 2 frames per second.

Q: 4. Can i use it in both 120 and 220 voltage

A: Yes, the Kodak REELS Film Digitizer for 8mm and Super 8 Film is multi-voltage. You will need a plug adapter to convert from the US-style plug to the plug type in your country.

Q: 5. Is the cost of processing included? Super 8 film used to include a postage paid envelope to send the film in for processing, and the cost was included in the price of the film.

A: no,it is not included.

Q: 6. Will this scan the sprocket holes?

A: The Kodak REELS Film Digitizer for 8mm and Super 8 Film has a film adjustment option under the menu to zoom your film capture in or out. This will allow you to record your standard 8mm film with the sprocket holes.

Q: 7. An 8 megapixel sensor be UHD 4K and now just HD? Is the compression as bad as the wolverines causing a grainy looking video?

A: The MPEG-4 file used by the Kodak REELS Film Digitizer for 8mm and Super 8 Film is a lower quality system that creates much smaller files, making storage much easier. Smaller files means lower image quality.

Q: 8. Would I be able to scan APS-C film with this once I get the film out of the canister?

A: It can only handle 35mm film. For APS, you can use this Wolverine: https://bhpho.to/33QgEao

Q: 9. Does the film need to be developed for the scanner to work?

A: Yes. In order for the unit to function properly negatives must be developed.

Q: 10. Will this work if you want to use a mirrorless camera instead of a smartphone?

A: You can use a mirrorless camera with a macro lens on a tripod with the Kodak Mobile Film Scanner.

[CMOS] This unit functions reasonably well keeping mind that it's not a commercial device. It functions by pausing each movie frame between a light source and digital sensor until the reel gets finished.
The converted movie is compressed meaning that the sequential sensor images are stored as a representation to allegedly save memory space. This results in compression artifacts which appear to excessively enhance the granularity of a film. For example slow Kodachrome (not deteriorated) reproduces reasonably well but Tri-X reversal film appears unusually grainy. Given the extensive storage afforded by SD memory is it's a wonder that compression needs to be bothered with at all. It's sort of tricky to thread the thing so some patience and practice are needed.

Potential buyers should be aware that problems arise not with the unit but rather with the condition of the film to be converted. Original 50 foot spools with no splices--like they came from being developed--likely will go right through with little problem. Longer spools of film will have splices and possibly some damage. It's really helpful to have access to a suitable film editor. The ability to repair film and replace splices can minimize mechanical jamming during conversion. It's a good idea to keep an eye on the conversion process and get used to the click-click-click associated with things going okay. It's not fun to find a gob of film on the floor if something goes wrong.

[5.885 lb] BLUF: This is a great digitizer and I recommend it, with some caveats. Some of the other reviews talked about needing to babysit the digitizer and I totally agree. In my case, the older metal reels (5 and 7) don't fit tightly on the shaft and tend to wobble, eventually falling off if I don't pay attention, even with the provided adaptor. Also, the film sometimes comes off the spools for reasons I haven't been able to figure out. Because the digitizer scans frame-by-frame, it is a time-consuming process. Having to babysit the digitizer means you can't really multi-task. Lastly, the directions aren't great and I resorted to watching a YouTube video to fully understand how the digitizer was supposed to operate once I took it out of the box. That said, I am REALLY impressed with the quality of the scans. I have a box of 40 to 50-year-old Super 8 reels and to have them scanned at a local lab would be crazy expensive (at $0.39/foot). Even though this project is taking longer than expected, it has been fun to get these precious memories in a more sharable format.
