The Platypod Platyball Ergo Ball Head for Photographyfrom Platypod Platyball Ergo Ball Head for Photographyhas a different design than traditional ball heads. The Platyball Ergo features an inverted design, with the panning turntable at the top rather than the bottom.

The Platyball Ergo provides standard 360° swivel and 90° tilt adjustment. Instead of a conventional knob for locking this ball head movement, the Ergo has two buttons on the front that you can control with your index finger. One tightens and the other loosens the ball head. The front positioning of these two controls lets you easily use them even during a shot. You won't need to use a second hand. There is also a dial on the side for locking the pan rotation, and a button on top for locking and releasing the Arca-type clamp. The pan axis rotates a full 360°, and you can keep rotating it without end.

The Platyball Ergo features an Arca-type clamp on top and a 3/8"-16 thread on the bottom. A 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 bushing adapter is also included for the bottom thread. Additionally, a calibration/level disc is included that allows you to convert the top from an Arca interface to a 1/4"-20 screw to which you can attach your camera directly. The calibration/level disc has a 1/4"-20 screw on top and Arca-type dovetail on the bottom. It also has a 3/8"-16 thread on the bottom. The purpose of the 3/8"-16 thread is for mounting the Ergo on the various optional Platypod plates that are available sold separately.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello, is the Induro BHD2 Ball Head compatible with the Induro AKP2 Tripod?

A: Yes, you can put this ballhead on virtually any tripod.

Q: 2. What is the benefit of the digital level, most current digital cameras have a built in level? Does this have any other features?

A: The Platypod Platyball Elite Ball Head has an unorthodox, inverted design that will appeal to some, as well as the digital level, and a load capacity of 22 lbs.

Q: 3. will this head mount on a monopod with Canon R5 MarkII 200-800mm lens or do I need to buy Oben VH-A30 Tilt Head for Monopods?

A: The Sirui K-30x Ball Head can be use on a monopod if it has a 3/8" screw. Most monopods do. The downside of using a large ball head like this on a monopod is that it has a lot of movement that you may not need on a monopod. It is also larger and heavier. My recommendation for a monopod is the Wimberley MH-100 MonoGimbal Head for Monopods BH #WIMH100. It allows you to find the center of balance of the camera and lens and move them to any angle with weightless freedom. You do need to purchase an arca type plate with it, as it does not include one. For the Canon 200-800 lens I recommend the Kirk Universal Multi-Use Lens Plate with 2 Screws (4.5") BH #KIKLP4502NV2.

Q: 4. How much does it weigh?

A: Platypod Platyball Ergo Ball Head weighs 1lb 5oz (595gm).

Q: 5. If the ball head comes with a slide in camera quick release plate why order the PU-60 slide in Quick release plate?

A: It is not a necessary accessory. It is listed in case you want more than one. Many do if they have more than one camera body or if they have lost the plate.

Q: 6. What is the maximum load capacity?

A: The maximum load capacity of the Platypod Extreme is 22lbs.

Q: 7. How are the goosenecks attached to the Platypod?

A: The goose necks attach via the 1/4-20" screws and go into the threaded holes on the front of the Platypod.

Q: 8. What is the weight of Extreme?

A: The Platypod eXtreme Camera Support comes in at a weight of 6.9 oz / 0.2 kg.

Q: 9. How tall is the Playball?

A: The Platypod Platyball Ergo Ball Head is 130mm tall.

Q: 10. Can screw this into a tripod?

A: No, this is designed to go into a cold shoe.

[90°] I have used relatively cheap ball heads up until now, while my spending on cameras and lenses has been astronomical. I was looking for something easy to use, that would work well on my Manfrotto tripod, my Peak Design travel tripod, and the PlatyPod. And would not have any slippage once it's set. And wouldn't break the bank. The Platyball fit all those criteria. Absolutely fantastic.

[Ball Head] Very well built and heavy. Will take some getting used to because it is different from most ball heads but very easy to use and only takes one hand to operate.

[Ball Head] I used the Platyball while on vacation on the beaches of Oregon. It held the weight of my Canon R6 with a 24-70 F4.0 lens in both landscape and portrait; no creeping. I needed to make some fast adjustments while changing tripod locations on a rocky and sea misted location. With the easy to use controls, it was a breeze to make those quick adjustments. I am very happy with my purchase.

[Ball Head] I have multiple cameras, full frame DSLR’s as well as Leica Q’s. For me portability is key and this set up is nothing but first class in every way.

[90°] I can easily level the camera 360 degrees by just leveling using the large crosshair. I can even readjust midway if something is off when shooting a panorama. The battery did show low, but when I put a new one in, it also shows low. I think it always show low on start up, then it turns green. It cost more than I wanted to spend but it was worth it to avoid all the frustration of center the air bubble I have been using.
