The UT FET47 Large-Diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone by United Studio Technologies is a painstaking recreation of a beloved German classic. Based on the original, highly sought-after U47 FET, the UT FET47 brings all of the versatility, wide open clarity, and depth of sound of the original without the vintage price tag. United Studio Technologies partnered with acclaimed capsule designer Eric Heiserman to bring the German K47 capsule back to life in a way that captures all of the big sound of the original without excessive harshness or sibilance.

The capsules are handmade in small batches in the US and tested prior to the final microphone build. Incredibly high SPL resiliency and an onboard -10 dB pad allow the mic to be used on nearly any instrument or application, especially its classic use as a kick drum mic. A switchable high-pass filter gives plenty of flexibility when used as a vocal mic or when recording brass, woodwinds, and guitar. A transformer built by California-based Cinemag Transformers delivers clean and quiet operation. The UT FET47 offers extraordinary, consistent sound quality that only an uncompromising design can bring, all at an accessible price.

United Studio Technologies has worked closely with acclaimed capsule designer Eric Heiserman to produce a modern take on the classic K47 German capsule design. Featuring sourced Mylar and dual, matched backplates, the HZ-Series capsules possess consistent and accurate sound quality from side to side and a wide open, highly three-dimensional sound. Only a few capsules are manufactured at a time, and undergo strict testing and listening.

UT sought numerous recreations of the original German transformer but ultimately settled on an exceptional offering from California based Cinemag Transformers. It is a large, heavy transformer made from a 'striped core' of interleaved high nickel and steel laminations, wound to the specs of the original. The core utilizes a humbucking design, ensuring clean, quiet operation.

No attention to detail was spared in this loving recreation of a classic and the UT FET47 is handmade in the USA by actual recording engineers. The body is constructed from electroplated Nickel and solid milled brass, the connector is 24k gold plated, and the capsule is top-of-the-line with 34mm all-brass and a diaphragm made of 24k gold sputtered Mylar (PET film).

While the original U47 FET became beloved for its use as a bass drum microphone, this recreation by UT has all those same strengths but even more flexibility thanks to its clever design. High pressure levels still allow the UT FET47 to be used for drums, aided by the convenient -10 dB pad, but also features a switch-activated, high-pass filter at 75 Hz, allowing it to be more viable as a general instrument mic and especially as a vocal mic. UT designed this microphone to be a versatile studio workhorse and it shows.

The UT FET47 features laboriously sourced NOS (new old stock) FETs for just the right time-honored sound. True vintage polystyrene capacitors further aid in producing a microphone that perfectly recreates one of the most beloved classic early solid-state condenser mics for the modern recordist.

Q: 10. I am updating my Samson MTR 231, what differences should I expect between both mics, please?

A: In comparison, the Sennheiser is the more feature rich. 3 step low cut filter and 3 step pad. You are also getting more selectable pickup patterns. These allow you to more precisely tailor the mics performance to a specific application. Comparatively the mic are similar in self noise, however the Sennheiser offers better specs in dynamic range as well as signal to noise ratio. Regarding frequency response, the Sennheiser is relatively flat, with the Samson featuring a slight boost in the higher frequencies. This will generally be interpreted as the Sennheiser having a warmer sound.

[-10 dB] I own 3 of these mics, as well as Shure SM81s, AT4050s and Senheisser Mk 4s. If you want extremely quite, low distortion, low coloration mic,s at a low cost, these mics are an excellent buy. I've owned mine for about 10 years and they have been flawless. They are great for drums, acoustic guitars, orchestral recording, etc. These are accurate mics, without romantic colorations.

[Phantom Power] The voice sounds very bassy. Its pretty sensitive. Loved the fact that the shock mount came with it. Its well built. Its sensitive. When I monitor it I can hear sounds from far but when I use to for my calls like Zoom or teams, it just sounds great.

[Cardioid] I already have two mics: AKG C 214 and C 2000. This new one gives me a new color to my small collection, transparent sound, almost no noise, great natural sounding timbre... for sure, the right choice avoiding similar sound among my mics.

[Phantom Power] By far one of the coolest mics on the market. I was skeptical at first. I used it, and instantly become fan. I can use this mic on literally anything! My clients love the glow of the tube in the mic. It creates a great vibe. You also have full twin topology. If you don't like the way it sounds with the tube engaged, switch it over to FET. Still not satisfied, you can blend between the Tube and FET. It also has an auto-pad feature. This feature alone is AWESOME! It helps out with those clients who do not have mic discipline or just bob from side to side, or just get way too into the song. Great sounding mic, with all the bells and whistles you can imagine! Very flexible and versatile! Must have in your microphone arsenal.

[Phantom Power] First impressions couldn't be better. I'm not gonna say I'm some sort of microphone expert or anything but right out of the box this mic sounds good without any tinkering with settings or anything I put it on direct monitor through my speakers my voice sounded so identical to the real thing that it was actually kinda scary in all seriousness I'm very happy with my purchase and I will use this mic for years to come for many applications whether it be for voice overs or vocals I'm sure this mic with serve me well.

[Mono] All jokes aside (which is a very true and accurate statement), this microphone really did put a smile on my face. It didn't need EQ or compression for it to accurately portray the sounds I put in front of it. I bought a pair of these and set one up in front of my guitar and one for my vocal and played a live song that I tracked into pro tools. I couldn't have been happier with the results. Great product and an even better one for the price!

[Mono] I bought this mic to track vocals for podcasting and public radio and I am so glad I did. It easily competes with higher tier mics and when it comes to quality and durability, this mic exceeds expectations. I loved it so much that I bought another one for a friend.

Seriously. Buy this mic. And enjoy saving yourself hundreds, if not thousands.

[Mono] In terms of noise, distortion, sensitivity, coloration and (as far as I could tell, polar pattern) there's nothing to fault. It's a very good LDC mic.

Such high fidelity reveals everything in the recording environment too. I would have to spend a fortune on acoustic treatment and sacrifice other uses for my room before I could tolerate the sounds it produces here.

Analogy: an ultra hi-res camera reveals all the things impairing the focus and contrast in your photos: defocus and motion blur, lens deficiencies, etc.
