The DS-73 Semi-Open Reference Monitoring Headphones from Direct Sound are powerful, accurate critical listening headphones designed for studio applications that require a wide, flat EQ response and reduced ambient noise. With a circumaural design that fits over the ears without completely blocking out all sounds, the semi-open configuration helps balance extraneous noises for creating quality audio mixes.

A pair of 50mm drivers can handle enough power to allow you to hear your tracks over loud performances during recording, while a high sensitivity and extra wide frequency response provides great accuracy, making it easier to pick out the finest details for mixing and mastering. A quality, gold-plated 3.5mm TRS plug ensures a clean signal, and the headphones include a screw-on adapter for connecting to 1/4" jacks. With a good balance of noise cancellation, audio quality, build quality, and output power, the DS-73 monitoring headphones can be a great choice for audio enthusiasts, home recordists, and working professionals alike.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this comfortable?

A: I've worn versions of this headphone for very long periods of time in the studio, but now that I'm not in the studio anymore, I've purchased them for my employees who want great sound and comfort and may be sitting and coding for long periods. I think they are a great set.

Q: 2. where was this product made?

A: This product is made in CHINA.

Q: 3. Do these headphones come with velour pads?

A: I have sourced these headphones locally (in Australia) and from BHphotovideo. The local ones had vinyl pads and the BH ones were velour. I have worn both for extended periods and find the comfort and sound quality to be the same. Great sounding cans and easy to live with during both recording and mixing. I can thoroughly recommend them.

Q: 4. Are they closed back?

A: Yes, they cover the ears entirely. The only downside in my opinion is that the bass isn't the best, but if you boost it on iTunes the product gets better.

Q: 5. I know it says the earpads are "suede", but checking if that's real suede or synthetic? Thanks

A: The earpads on the Sony MDR-MV1 Open-Back Reference Monitor Headphones are made of a soft, synthetic suede-like material, not genuine suede leather.

Q: 6. what is the difference between the AKG K 240 studio and the K 240 MK II headphones?

A: K 240 MK II are made in Austria, AKG K 240 are made in China.

Q: 7. what ear pad replacement i can buy from B&H for this headphone ?

A: At this time, we do not offer replacement ear pads for that model headphone.

Q: 8. Is a head phones amp needed to get the best sound out of these?

A: While a headphone amplifier will generally improve the quality of the listening experience, whether one is needed in a specific scenario depends on the impedance ratings of both the headphones and the device they are connecting to. The impedance of the Samson SR850B Semi-Open Studio Headphones (32 ohms) is relatively low and they should perform well in most scenarios without the need for a headphone amplifier.

Q: 9. Does it come with a case?

A: The AKG K 240 Studio do not ship with a case.

Q: 10. how well do these hold up to sweat from a boom operator on an outdoor set on a warm/hot day?

A: They are not sweat or weather resistant, but they are well made. Impossible to predict, but average sweat and humidity should not effect the performance or reliability very much.

[Dynamic] My name is Brendan Evjen. I actually mix through these headphones, despite industry wisdom to mix through traditional monitors. I achieve amazing results! I've worked with Chris Vrenna (NIN, Marilyn Manson, Gnarls Barkley, etc.) Ken Andrews (Failure, Chris Cornell, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), David Reilly (God Lives Underwater, Rob Zombie, etc.) and many others... the results have been stunning. These cans do the job. Nuff said!

[2" / 50 mm] I listen to organ music which has a huge range of dynamics. The lows ( 16 htz) are clean and clear with no drop off. I was going to invest in an expensive audio system but these are better.

[32 Ohms] Great sound right out the box. Powerfull but detailed bass, highs not harsh and a lovely midrange. Better after run in period. Very high quality materials and awesome looks. I will buy it again if needed.

[Gold] Absolutely flat response at low and medium volume levels. Great for composing and mixing. What you hear in the headphones is what you hear in the studio monitors (assuming the monitors are calibrated correctly). Very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. If you need to work and not disturb others, these are a great choice. And with the open design, you can carry on a conversation without removing them (as well as hear your smartphone notifications and know when your coffee is brewed).

[1/4" TRS] I recently bought a new pair of these from B & H Photo. The last time I bought these, a couple of years ago, I did not like these at all. They sounded overly thin, lacked body, sounded too harsh and bright in the upper mids/lower treble, dry, the bass sounded thin, weak, and rolled off. Needless to say, I quickly sold them. My Sennheiser 650's literally smoked them! At that time, I did not have a good CD player, and a lousy amp. This time around, I am VERY IMPRESSED with the 701's! I now have a Marantz CD5003 cd player, Headroom Micro Amp, and have over 300 hours of break-in on my 701's. Totally different animals to say the least! Now they are now truly Reference Class. They now sound exceptionally open, fast, detailed, spacious, clean, and clear without being bright, peaky, or harsh. The soundstage headstage is amazing. I now have no complaints with the bass. It is very extended, smooth, accurate, and powerful. It now competes head-to-head with my HD650's. Most of the time, I actually prefer the 701's now! Sometimes the 650's can sound a little too laid-back, boomy or muddy in the bass, and rolled off on top compared to the 701. I also have to turn the 650's volume up more to get them to open up, compared to the 701's. I now HIGHLY RECOMMEND the K701's...but only if you plan on using a good source, headphone amp, and good program material!

[32 Ohms] I use these headphones with my pc as well as my home stereo system. Great for everything at home: video editing, music, movies. They isolate yet leave space for sound reproduction, and they look great. Occasionally the head band rubs the top of my head wrong after hours of use, but I think this is more attributable to how I was wearing them initially, plus the fact that I have been keep my hair cropped short. Best pair of headphones I have ever owned.

[32 Ohms] I use this product as a reference check while mixing. These headphones are especially good for hearing midrange and high frequency issues in the mix. Any sibilance problems will stand out clearly with these headphones. A very useful tool for hearing unwanted artifacts that result from compression, EQ, vocal tuning, reverb, etc. A small minority of folks may find these headphones pleasing for casual music listening, but I would not recommend these headphones for that purpose. They are far too detailed and critical. Not necessarily the flattering type of listening experience. Rather, they are a useful tool for a recording engineer or producer who needs to hear subtleties within the complex layer of music. Headphones such as the K701s are just about necessary for the artist who wants to create professional quality, artifact-free recordings.

[Semi-Open-Back] I bought my K701 10 years ago or something similar and since then I really love them. So light i can wear them for hours playng games or listening records. The only excetion is fot mobility where I use the GRADO RS125E 'cause are smaller but good enought. Sonically pleasing, with a punch you wont imagine from a reference class.

[Semi-Open-Back] As a composer, recording artist and 20-year veteran of big recording studios, I had been looking for a reliable headphone to use during the mixing and mastering process in my new home studio (I have great reference speakers, but I like to mix at night, and this helps keep peace in the neighborhood). Yeah, I know and I've read in every magazine and online source that you can't mix with headphones. WRONG. The K 701s provide superbly reliable reproduction of instrumental music during tracking and mixing (bleed during tracking can, of course, be an issue with the 701s...if your mic is close to your headphones during recording, you need a closed-back headphone...I use my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones for those kind of tracking applications). But mixing and mastering is where the 701s are worth more than twice the price. Finally...reliably true sound (no phony extra bass, etc.), no ear fatigue (even after a 6-hour mixing session), and the price, especially from B&H, is on the money. I buy all kinds of recording gear from MIDI controllers to outboard effects processors, etc. Nothing I've ever purchased has made me feel as good about spending my hard-earned money. If you are a WORKING (home) studio musician and you want your next CD to sound professional...mix it using these, and it will. PS: I'm a struggling musician and recording pro, NOT an audiophile. I like things that work, that last and that sound good. That's why I like my 701s.

[98 dB ] Overall it is a fantastic sounding headphone for the price and it is extremely comfortable. The nice thing is that it will sound great on almost anything but if you want to get crazy with the amps and sound cards you can get even better sound.
