By combining the infamous SSL Bus Compressor circuit design with 2-band parallel dynamic EQ and recall-friendly stepped controls, SSL THE BUS+ 2-Channel Compressor & Dynamic EQfrom SSL THE BUS+ 2-Channel Compressor & Dynamic EQushers in both classic and innovative dynamics processing for anything from single tracks and stems to mixes and masters. Its top-of-the-line analog sonics and immense headroom scream "integrity" while the digitally controlled settings ensure precision, clean switching, and exemption from the unpredictability of traditional analog devices.

With four operating modes—Dual Mono, Mid-Side, Classic Stereo, and S/C Stereo, a stereo mode with a summed sidechain—and compression coloration options ranging from the gritty texture of the 4K console's "Hit Maker" to the transparency of the X Logic variant, THE BUS+ is an impressively versatile compressor. The addition of internal/external sidechains with a variable high-pass filter, a hidden transient expander, and a mix knob for variable parallel compression makes THE BUS+ a crown for any studio.

THE BUS+ is designed to be SSL's supreme version of the SSL Bus Compressor, building on the original circuit with premium components (including 2181 THAT VCAs), sophisticated control, customizable harmonic saturation, advanced sidechaining, flexible routing, and unexpected processing tools such as dynamic EQ.

  • Authentic, 100% analog circuit, controlled digitally using stepped front-panel pots
  • Four modes of operation—Classic Stereo, Stereo (with summed sidechain), Dual Mono, or Mid-Side
  • Huge +27.5 dBu headroom and selectable operating level (0, +10, or -5 dB)
  • External sidechain inputs and sends
  • Configurable processing order; put the Bus Compressor before or after the D-EQ
  • Global bypass, clipping indicators, and manual/automatic sleep modes

This is the heralded SSL Bus Compressor of old, remade for today's production needs.

  • LOW THD Mode reduces low-frequency distortion caused by compression
  • F/B Mode alters the compression characteristics for a more "relaxed" style of compression
  • 4K Mode's single-VCA operation with variable harmonic distortion brings grit and grunge
  • Negative ratios allow for creative pumping effects and control of particularly loud signals
  • New attack and release time constants including an additional auto setting
  • Precision MDAC-controlled make-up gain in coarse (1 dB) or fine (0.5 dB) steps
  • Variable sidechain high-pass filter control up to 300 Hz in 10 Hz steps
  • Moving-coil gain reduction meters

The D-EQ is SSL's powerful 2-band analog dynamic equalizer that lets you tweak the balance between background material and the main signal.

  • Compress/expand modes with three choices of time constants for each band
  • 16 selectable frequency points per band
  • Adjustable range per band from 0.5 to 15 dB
  • HF band can be switched to Bell shape, with selectable frequencies covering high-mids and highs
  • Frequency band static make-up gain for LF and HF bands (in Stereo or Summed S/C Stereo) or LF band (in Dual Mono or Mid-Side)
  • G-Series mode changes LF filter to be second order with degree of undershoot/overshoot
  • Tricolor activity LEDs to indicate D-EQ activity
  • Per-band bypass

[0.1 to 40 ms] Tough and solid. Compact and clean. Over the years the newer-model pre-amps just keep getting better and better. Consistent channel-to-channel quality. Will I be purchasing Mackie in the near future? Is the Pope ... well, you know the rest.

[19.03 lb] Had a sound system die in a church and needed something temporary to get them by. This combined with a DSP made my job MUCH easier and it solved a lot of problems for me.

[60 Ohms] I needed a new mixer for permanent installation at my church. A friend of mine with extensive experience in the recording industry recommended the Mackie VLZ4 series for their build quality and design for live recording as opposed to studio recording (previous mixer was for studio recording). I went with the 32-channel model so that I could have everything plugged in at the same time: the 16-channel snake that runs to front of house, 4 wireless mics, 4 ceiling mics, and 2 computers. We have 4 mono channels leftover for future growth. I love that this board has everything I need (post-fader aux sends, EQ, compressors) and very little of what I don't need (FX). The sound quality is fantastic - very rich and warm natural sound. Many people commented to me about how big the thing is, but we had the space for it and the 24-channel model wasn't big enough for my needs.

[-20 to +20 dB] This is the 3rd one of these that I've bought over the past 26 years as a full time musician. It fits perfectly in my rack, has more than I need for bussing etc., has a very well thought out design for those of us that are pretty much plugin and play. It's strength is the quality and versatility fitted into a compact mixer. This has always been the niche of this mixer. Before this entered the market, the only mixers that had all of it's features were MUCH bigger in size. With this in mind it is not intended for the sound man sitting at the back of the room needing to make adjustments constantly throughout the night. I say this because the faders are intentionally narrow and it can be easy to accidentally hit a channel assignment button. For most of us who only need to move chanell faders or make minor adjustments every now and then, you couldn't ask for better.

[0.1 to 40 ms] Solid. Been using Mackie Mixers for years. Really dig the new sliders, away with the white and there's even a better feel with the black. The color pattern makes this arrangement of knobs the best visually and it's very easy on the eyes to discern. Quality is like always, top notch.

[-20 to +20 dB] Killer quality and sound. It definitely widens the stereo field a bit. The transformer button wont be for everyone. I tried it on the 2 track and didnt like it, but gave it a go on the bass buss and yeah dude big time.

[19.03 lb] I've been lusting after a physical LA2A for years. I actually first used one in the early 1970's in a radio station, their original market. I've tried a number of plugins, some of which aren't bad. But the weird mixture of tubes, transformers and a light bulb (panel in this case) is just hard to beat. Like all great audio gear, you may cease to notice it when it's there, but you'll truly miss it when it's not there. I have a number of wildly dynamic singers in the studio, and this just works the magic to make their vocals sit in the mix. And it makes those same vocals bigger sounding at the same time. Is it the best LA2A clone out there? I don't know since I can't test it against all the rest. But it's darn good. BTW, let me put to rest any fears about build quality, etc. This is my second (and won't be my last) piece of Warm Audio kit. Absolutely no issues with the way these beasts arrive and work. Possibly, outside of acoustic treatment, the best investment I've ever made in my studio.
