Tiffen 67mm Soft Contrast 2 Filterhas a light absorbing element in the filter which, without exposure compensation, will reduce contrast by also darkening highlights. Use this latter filter when lighter shadows are not desired. In both cases, the mild flare produced from bright highlights is sometimes used as a lighting effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have a Polarizer filter , do I need a Graduated HD filter for high contrast photos?

A: The graduated HD filter is often used to mitigate bright sky against a darker landscape. I sometimes use it in other orientations to cut down bright areas of photo I am taking - imagine taking a photo of a dark building where the bright area has a vertical orientation on the left or right, or taking a photo through a door or similar portal. On the other hand, while a polarizer might provide some general overall brightness reduction, it is generally used to emphasize darker areas that are located at right angles to the light source (such as darkening sky against the clouds in a band 90 degrees from the sun), or to eliminate or reduce glare from reflected light - light reflected from smooth surfaces is highly polarized, light reflected from rough surfaces, such as the ocean, is rather scattered and the glare can be only minimally reduced by a polarizer. So the functions are different, and the graduated filter reduces the contrast (although I guess it could be used to exaggerate the contrast) whereas the polarizer is often used to enhance contrast.

Q: 2. This filter is very loose (cannot fully tighten, keep rotating) when stacked on top of a B+W XS-Pro 67mm filter... Faulty unit? XS-Pro 67mm diameter slightly wider than TIffen 67mm?

A: I believe this filter is meant to be loose so that it can be easily turned to get the gradation to hit your photograph in the perfect position. Mine is loose as well and works well. It's my favorite filter!

Q: 3. Is this filter made of glass or plastic?

A: It's glass and I love this filter.

Q: 4. Is it soft-edge graduated?

A: Yes.

Q: 5. Hello,I am looking to use this with my 18-55mm ED II Nikkor lens and I have never used a screw-on GND filter before, so will this attach easily and will it be easy to adjust the GND horizon line? I am reading some reviews that say it's difficult to locate which is top and bottom for this filter...I am looking to use it mainly for sunrise/sunset shots on the coast and in the mountains. Will this be a good choice? The price is what's attractive me the most here...Thank you for your feedback!

A: Attaching the Tiffen 52mm Graduated 0.6 ND Filter is as easy as screwing the filter onto the filter threads on the front of the lens. As the horizon line is built into the filter, it is not adjustable. You would have to frame your image to correspond with the horizon line on the filter. A graduated neutral density filter will have some effect for sunrise/sunset, especially when the sun is higher in the sky. However, when the sun is close to the horizon, a reverse graduated filter is usually recommended to better even out the brightness in the center of the frame from the sun as opposed to a standard graduated filter when the sun is higher in the sky.

Q: 6. What is a graduated neutral density filter?Does the filter rotate? By this I mean, can I rotate the filter to high light certain areas?

A: A graduated neutral-density filter is an optical filter that has a variable light transmission. Typically half of the filter is of neutral density which transitions, either abruptly or gradually, into the other half which is clear. It is used to bring an overly-bright part of a scene into the dynamic range of film or sensor. For example, it can be used to darken a bright sky so that both the sky and subject can be properly exposed. There are typically two types of graduated ND filters, which are hard edge and soft edge. This particular Tiffen Graduated 0.6 ND filter is a feathered graduated ND filter, which means that there is a natural-appearing taper between the density and clear areas of the filter. This filter does not rotate.

Q: 7. is this a variable filter?

A: No, the Tiffen 67mm 6pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter is not a variable neutral density filter. The Tiffen 67mm 6pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter is designed to create multiple stars that appear to streak outward from the center of bright light sources in your scene. It does not vary the density of light entering the camera and cannot be adjusted, though you may rotate the filter to rotate the direction of the stars that are created by the filter.

Q: 8. What is the best holder for the 4.x4 graduated filter. Because of its thickness what brand works?

A: Cokin Z Filter Holder works fine, plasticity. Better is Sioti, aluminum, plastic and better made. Newer filter holder slots are for the now popular 2mm glass. This filter is thick, 5mm? I own one, bought at B

Q: 9. If I use a warming filter on a bright sunny day will it affect the colors?

A: Yes Tiffen 67mm 812 Warming Filter will affect the colors in a bright sunny day. You may need to set the white balance of the camera to custom before using the filter though.

Q: 10. what is the filter factor for this? How much light does it reduce?

A: There is no light loss when using this filter.

[0.22 lb] This filter narrows the dynamic range of what I'm shooting in bright sunlight just a little bit. Wish I had got the number 2 filter instead of number 1, but I feel I got my money's worth.

[0.22 lb] Love this filter to bring up the shadows and make the highlights glow. Don’t think that “1” is too strong.

[0.22 lb] I take a lot of landscape pictures. Lately I have been taking ocean view pictures in the evening and had big contrast issues - bright sky and dark foreground. I had the camera checked out and everything was to spec. HDR mode and Software couldn't correct the problem so I tried the Tiffen Graduated ND filter which solved the problem perfectly. Pictures are much better balanced.

[4.1 x 3.5 x 1"] I am experimenting with this filter to see how to use it to get different results. It lowers the contrast of the image as per the description, but you can use this characteristic in different ways. I have no scientific proof, but I feel that it also increases the dynamic range of my camera sensor. An interesting and unique filter.
