Shorter and lighter than the NTG3 and with a flatter bass response, the RODE NTG5 Shotgun Microphone Kit with Auray Boompolemoisture-resistant shotgun microphone lets you capture natural, uncolored sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project without weighing down your rig.

Professional-level features such as ultralow-noise circuitry, a smooth off-axis response, and a tightly controlled low end make it ideal for a range of location recording scenarios. Plus, it includes a furry windshield and a pistol grip shockmount that can be attached to a boompole for increased versatility.

The NTG5's extremely high sensitivity allows it to produce robust output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG5 delivers acoustic transparency due to its pioneering circular acoustic ports, gentle rise in high frequencies, and rumble-reducing attenuation of low bass frequencies. Its switch- and dial-free design lets you set up quickly and focus on the sound instead of fiddling with various mic settings. RF-bias technology and conformal coating ensure reliable performance even in severe conditions.

When your work takes you outdoors, you're bound to encounter humidity and condensation, which can cause many mics to fail. The NTG5's RF-bias technology and conformal coating provide excellent resistance to moisture, cold, and dust, allowing you to reliably capture high-quality audio in normal and adverse environmental conditions.

The NTG5 was engineered for transparency and all-weather performance. The combination of the NTG5's 8" long body, revolutionary circular acoustic ports, and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused on-axis directionality, smooth off-axis response, and a transparent tone with a tightly controlled low end. Its ultralow self-noise of 10 dBA and highly sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones.

Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 48 VDC phantom power, the NTG5 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras. The included short XLR cable—designed for use with the supplied pistol grip—features Neutrik and Switchcraft connectors and an integrated strain-relief junction box.

The NTG5 includes the PG2-R pistol grip shockmount, which impedes the transfer of vibrations to the microphone, and accommodates comfortable handheld operation or placement on a boompole. A mic clip is supplied in case you need to affix the NTG5 to a standard mic stand in a studio.

The NTG5 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted light wind noise from fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, swap the windscreen for the included furry windshield.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I get a good audio quality recording video with NTG5 in an iPhone (with adapter)?

A: An adapter between an iOS device and the NTG5 would not work because the NTG5 requires phantom power. So you would need to use an audio interface that can provide phantom power to the NTG5 and is compatible with iOS devices, like B&H # IKIRIGPREHD for example.

Q: 2. This question is directed to B&H staff - you must have heard about the RF interference problem with this mic? There is a YT video about it. I want to purchase but am wondering if Rode has solved the problem or it's just a small number of mics? No one has stated if it's a part problem/xlr cable problem/shielding problem, etc. Anyone know the details?

A: We have not heard of any customers experiencing problems with RF when using the NTG5. We reached out to Rode as well for more information and to find out whether they were aware of any issues with the NTG5 regarding RF or if they had seen the video you mentioned, which none of us were able to find. Rode has not had any reported problems with the NTG5 and if you have in fact purchased the NTG5 and are experiencing problems with RF, they do want to know about it and would like for you to contact them directly for assistance. Or the mic was purchased from B&H, please do let us know about it. It is certainly possible that a bad cable or a damaged input or circuitry on a camera, recorder or mixer can be the source of RF problems, but there should not be any issues that are created by the mic itself.

Q: 3. Can this be used with the rode wireless go to create a wireless booming solution?

A: No. This microphone requires 48v phantom power, which the Wireless Go does not supply. You will want to use something like the RodeLink system, which does provide phantom power: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1187383-REG/rode_news_shooter_newsshooter_kit_digital_wireless.html

Q: 4. Does this microphone have the standard protection IP67?

A: Rode has not provided an IP rating in the specifications for the NTG5. Rode does note that the NTG5 offers resistance to high humidity, severe cold, damp, and dust. The NTG5’s conformal coating is a thin layer of protective material that shields the active electronics from any moisture or particles, and the RF-biased circuitry is very resistant to moisture which enables use in harsh weather conditions.

Q: 5. Is the WS-10 a deadcat?

A: The WS10 is the Furry Windscreen. Made for the Rode NTG 5.

Q: 6. Any advice for putting the windjammer over the blimp? I have tried several times and it does not seem to stretch far enough.

A: The components included with the Rycote Super-Blimp NTG5 Windshield Kit for Rode NTG5 Microphone( BH # RYSBBTG5WK) are custom fitted for compatibility. You may want take advantage of our free Video Chat service: https://bhpho.to/3xqSqrE

Q: 7. how can connect and attach the NTG5 to my camera and record directly on my camera?

A: If using a camera with XLR mic inputs that have phantom power, then all you need to do is plug the mic in via an XLR cable. If using a dslr with a 3.5mm input, then you would need an additional external mixer/ recorder to give you XLR mic inputs with phantom power. You would then plug the mic into this recorder and output a mini jack to the camera. Here's an example: B&H # TADR60DMKII.

Q: 8. How this as a camera mounted mic on a Sony Fx9 for run and gun doc work.

A: Remove the included pistol grip shock mount and use the camera's microphone holder.

Q: 9. Could this be attached to a camera or camcorder?

A: Rode SM4-R Suspension Shockmount BH #ROSM4R: https://bhpho.to/2Uj4Ri6 or WindTech Hot-Shoe Shotgun Microphone Clip CM-21 B&H # WICM21

Q: 10. Where is this mic made? (In Australia, like other Rode products?)

A: The Rode NTG5 Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone is manufactured in Australia.

[Solid-State] Love this mic. The quality, even in a not so perfectly controlled environment (forced air heating vents overhead) is excellent. I’ve used it so far for live online events.

[Phantom Power] This mic was at the top of my budget. I could have gone with something a few hundred dollars cheaper but I figured this was the only mic I was going to get for a long while so put a but extra in to get the best quality in the price range. This is a plug and play mic. There are no bells or whistles to it, I do wish it had a power indicator or some type of visual feedback that it was connected. I can just tap on the mic to see levels or hear it throw headphones but not the end of the world. Some other mics have gain controls on them but I will be able to set those controls on the FX3 top handle. This is a short shotgun mic so you don't usually see controls on this length mic. I wanted a short XLR mic and so far very happy with this.

If you are pairing this with the FX3 this mic is smaller than the mic holder on the FX3 top handle. This is not the fault of the mic. I knew there may have been an issue with this even before I got it. I read that you can get rubber spacers on Amazon for the mic. I went that route but still with one rubber spacer it still was too loose. I added gaffers tape over the spacer to make up for the extra room and it works very well now. I decided to add the rubber spacer first so I didn't gum up the mic directly with gaffers tape. I also am happy with all the extras that come with this kit. Boom mic holder, Dead Cat. Nice kit.

[48 V] Love this mic for hobby and professional use. Works great for voice over application as well as on a overhead boom or on a desktop mount. This mic is well designed to limit side noise or distortion. Fits nicely on my canon c200. Comes with wind sock and a variety of mounting hardware for flexible applications. Love my Ntgg5.

[Phantom Power] This mic sounds good in the environments for which I purchased it: vocals for both interior church and outdoor documentary-style work. It provides a high input signal, which allows me to keep the input on my C300 mark ii about the 3-4 level, whereas my other microphones sit about 5-6.

[Black] I just came off of a small feature doc project where we used 2 of these microphones for interviews, and they both sounded INCREDIBLE. Great frequency response, low noise floor. This kit also comes with a TON of accessories. The shock mount is fantastic and is great at isolating. Build is solid on everything. Very similar sound signature to more expensive mics like the 416.

[End Address] This mic has a lot of oomph and almost no internal noise. Impressive on its own, more impressive when considering the included accessories at this price point.
