Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have a Canon EOS RP. Will this kit work with its sensor?

A: hi--yes, this kit is compatible with the Canon RP.

Q: 2. I have a Fujifilm X-T20 and X-T3 what swab size should I get? Both are listed on type 1 (20mm) and type 3 (24mm). Please advise, thank you in advance.

A: You would want to use the type 3 on your Fuji X-T20 and X-T3.

Q: 3. Do you have to use a liquid solution with these?

A: Yes, these swabs are meant to be used with Eclipse, the optic cleaning solution made by the same company as the swabs, Photographic Solutions (aka PSI, Photosol, Inc). There is a video on their website that will show you how. I have a 2 oz bottle and it has lasted for years. A note that not all sellers will ship Eclipse so look for an online dealer who will, or pick it up at a local store that carries it. Eclipse is safe and pretty harmless but has methanol in it which is flammable.

Q: 4. Is this compatible with Canon R5?

A: Yes, the Photographic Solutions Type 3 Sensor Swab Ultra (12-Pack, 24mm) (B&H# PHUST3) is perfectly sized for swiping laterally across the 24mm x 36mm full frame sensor of the Canon EOS R5.

Q: 5. Are these swabs appropriate for the Nikon D850?

A: Yes, these are for a full frame sensor.

Q: 6. What is the shelf-life of these (sealed and stored) in a camera bag?

A: The shelf life for these swabs are indefinite, since they are just swabs and not fluid, they will last a very long time.

Q: 7. Will these 24mm ones work for both D500 and Z6 II cameras?

A: These swabs are meant for full frame cameras, like the Z6 but you could possibly use them on the D500, although an aps-c swap would work much better as far as cleaning the sensor more efficiently and properly covering the sensor.

Q: 8. What is the life time of an unused swab which was kept in its package. I bought 3 years ago and I want to use.

A: 5 years is the most time one would want to wait to use these swabs.

Q: 9. My sensor is 22 x 15 do I use a 24mm sensor wipe to clean it?

A: No, use the 17mm sensor swab.

Q: 10. My Nikon D500 is a DX camera. Yet it shows up in Type 3, for full frame cameras. Is that correct?

A: Just to follow my previous reply: Photographic Solutions may have referenced all Dxxxx cameras as DX and all Dxxx cameras as FX and hence recommended Type 3 in error. The procedure is to wipe along the length rather than the width of the sensor so the swab should be close to the sensor width (shorter side). In the case of a D500, hat's 15.7mm so Type 2 (17mm) is the closest match.

[Plastic Handle] First attempt at cleaning a sensor. Correct pressure and a slow is smooth, smooth is fast mindset is needed.
Took three swabs to completely clean, but ~$10 (Only because I used three swabs) for a cleaning instead of $60 (Having a "Professional" do it) is a winner. Plus, company backs their product if your camera is damaged regardless ( whether swab did the damage or user error).

[0.12 lb] I noticed that my sensor had a lot of dust on it when I shot some images using f/22 - f/45 (long telephoto images). I spent a great amount of time on PhotoShop removing the dust images from my shots. It was actually quicker to clean the sensor than to edit the images.

I was uncomfortable to clean the sensor but after doing some reading I learned that the sensor as a protective coating and if you read the instructions for these products it's OK to clean the CMOS chip. You must read the information and do everything suggested. If you put the swab down on a table it's dirty and cannot be used. You should not use any other cleaner than those recommended. You must clean the mirror box and outside of the camera before working with the sensor. If you have dust in the mirror box, it's just going to get into the camera...

This swab is the right size for my Canon EOS 5D Mark II. It took a couple wipes to get all the dust off the sensor, but it left the CMOS chip perfectly clean, and solved my problem of dust on the sensor. It took a few tries to get everything. I just cleaned, made a couple exposures at f/45, checked them, re-cleaned, until it was done.

There are some dumb examples of cleaning on the web - for example there's this one guy that is in a desert, opening his camera and cleaning it from the back of his truck... That did not impress me - I'd rather be in a closed environment with no dust floating around. Another guy used the swab to scour the sensor - he literally rubbed dozens of times - that did not seem like a good idea either...

This swab must be used with some form of cleaner - I used Eclipse from photographic solutions. This cleaner evaporates very fast and does a good job of cleaning.

[0.12 lb] The swabs are incredible easy to use. I use a little of the cleaning solution on the swab, wipe it back and forth lightly a few times and bam, sensor is super clean. I would definitely recommend to anyone trying to clean their own sensor.

[Plastic Handle] Noticed a few spots and dots appearing in the skies (noticeably) with my new mirrorless camera. I read about sensor cleaning, and first thought I'd get a pro to do it, but the YouTube videos made it look easy. It is easy. Buy these and some cleaner and you don't have to worry about those surfaces ever again. Keep a bunch handy.
