By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you can to control depth of field. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters. Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this create vignetting on the Voigt 40mm f/1.2 on a Leica M?

A: No, this filter should not cause vignetting on a 40mm lens.

Q: 2. with an ultra-wide angle lens (i.e. Canon 16-35mm F4L with a full frame camera), do you get the dreaded X show up and if so at what density does it show up?

A: The X you can sometimes pick up in the image with a variable ND filter is caused most of the time by variable ND filters that go over 7-8 stops and lower quality ones. The B+W filter is fine. The one thing you might pick up is when set to the widest setting on that lens, 16mm you might pick up some vignette. And that is going to happen with that lens with most filters because of how wide it can go. The filter is designed with a thinner frame so it should be somewhat minimal.

Q: 3. Can someone explain the markings on the filter? Thanks

A: The markings are 1/2 stop increments. This helps you determine the proper exposure.

Q: 4. How thick is this filter?

A: The profile is rather thin. It is similar to a typical UV filter in thickness. Which is actually thin considering all of the components involved in a variable ND. One thing to keep in mind: on my 16-35mm II (82mm filter), once mounted, it does not flush with the lens. It is slightly wider (3-4mm) than the tip of the lens. It can be pretty annoying if you're trying to mount a hood.

Q: 5. Does the ring physically stop at min and max ends, or does it just spin all the way around?

A: Yes! Hard stops on both ends. Great feature.

Q: 6. Does this filter come with an 82 mm front cap?

A: Received only the filter without cap

Q: 7. Has anyone used this filter with the DJI X5 camera? If so, how is the color fidelity? Is there any specific color cast? Thank you.

A: B+W make very high quality filters. This will give you a great performance when used on lens with the X5.

Q: 8. How thick is this filter?

A: I don't have this filter. Not sure why I was asked by BH to answer the question. Sorry.

Q: 9. 82mm. Does this filter have "front threads", for instance to screw on a lens hood?

A: The following system offer 86mm Front Filter Threads.

Q: 10. Can I use a this filter for a Canon 24-105mm and Sigma 18-35mm lens?

A: Yes, but you need one more part to make it fit. You'll need what's called a step-up ring. Your Canon lens is a 77mm filter thread size and you need a step-up ring (super cheap to buy) that spans the difference (a 77mm to 82mm ring). Same for Sigma - need to find a 72-82mm step-up ring or you may have to buy two, a 72-77mm and a 77-82mm. You can shop for them here.

[Glass] I used this during the 2024 eclipse, exactly what I needed for great eclipse shooting!

[Glass] I wanted to take pictures with my Canon R7 and this allowed me to do just that - safely without hurting my eyes. The pictures were better than I hoped for since in our area there where periods of clouds with a few openings. I liked the cloud pictures since they shown color and depth.

[Solid ND] I purchased this filter for the April 2024 eclipse and even with partly cloudy skies was worth it.

[46 mm] I pulled the trigger on the filter when the forecast called for clear skies for the recent eclipse. I used my Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L lens on my R5. The 82mm-77mm adapter allowed me to use the filter on it.

[Solid ND] I purchased this filter for the April 2024 eclipse, and it worked perfectly. You can see sunspots in my picture below towards the end of the eclipse! I was able to add it and remove it smoothly from the Canon 100-400mm mk2 lens, which turned out to be critical because I had to take the filter off during peak eclipse (totality). I've had filters before which were very difficult to remove; this was great.

[Aluminum] I bought this filter so I could photograph the April solar eclipse. It’s a good quality filter, was easy to put on and take off and it protected my lens and camera. I was very pleased with my results and hope I get to use the filter again.

[Aluminum] Congratulations, you've found what you're looking for.

Smooth, de-clicked dial for maximum precision, all metal construction, and built with Min/Max stops to prevent the ugly X a lot of VNDs suffer from. There's also very little (if any) noticeable color shift in the image.

I shot on my Sony a7s classic in the snow on a partly sunny day at ISO 3200 (minimum allowed in video mode) with my 50mm f/1.4 lens wide open and still didn't need to max this filter out. The amount of lighting control this allows for is invaluable. Highly recommended!
