The RODE VideoMic NTG Shotgun Microphone Kit for Androidgives video content creators, run-and-gun filmmakers, voiceover artists, and podcasters the sound of the highly regarded NTG shotguns in a convenient camera-mount mic that requires no additional adapters to work with cameras, smartphones, tablets, portable recorders, and USB-equipped computers.

With focused directivity, continuously variable gain, digitally switched tone controls, and an internal USB-rechargeable battery, the VideoMic NTG provides transparent sonic performance and immensely flexible functionality. Thanks to its aerospace-grade aluminum housing, the VideoMic NTG is durable, compact, and lightweight, making it equally at home atop a camera or on a boompole.

The auto-sensing 3.5mm TRRS output and included TRRS cable ensure compatibility with cameras, portable recorders, mobile devices, and computers—no adapters required. A peak warning light, a -20 dB pad, and the selectable -20 dB safety channel help you easily avoid distortion in your recordings. When used as a USB microphone, the 3.5mm jack functions as a stereo headphone output for real-time monitoring of your signal.

Thanks to firmware version 2.0, the VideoMic NTG is now MFi-certified for use with Lightning-equipped Apple iOS mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod) when paired with the Rode SC15 USB Type-C to Lightning accessory cable.

The VideoMic NTG's body features acoustic perforations rather than the linear slots traditionally used in shotgun microphones. This annular line tube technology was ported from Rode's NTG5 to deliver transparency and a natural, uncolored sound.

The VideoMic NTG utilizes a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of it while attenuating sound from the sides and rear. Its low-noise electronics and sensitive condenser element deliver more detailed audio than the mics typically found in cameras and portable recorders. Since it is even more sensitive than the VideoMic Pro+ model, it requires less gain to achieve an equivalent signal level.

Simply connect the VideoMic NTG to your camera, portable recorder, or mobile device via the included TRRS cable. The VideoMic NTG's auto-sensing 3.5mm TRRS output automatically switches between TRS and TRRS as necessary, so you won't need additional adapter cables. The 3.5mm jack is wired in a dual-mono configuration, ensuring that the mic signal is sent identically to both input channels of your recording device.

Plug the VideoMic NTG into your computer, smartphone, or tablet via USB to use it as a digital USB microphone for direct recording to your favorite software. Its integrated analog-to-digital converter operates at 24-bit / 48 kHz to provide full-resolution, uncompressed audio quality.

As of firmware version 2.0, the VideoMic NTG is officially MFi-certified, unlocking complete compatibility with Lightning-equipped iOS devices, including iPhone, iPad, and iPod. Plug your VideoMic NTG into your iPhone, iPad, or iPod via USB with the Rode SC15 USB Type-C to Lightning accessory cable, unleashing the full potential of the mic, including:

  • Headphone monitoring with complete volume control using the variable output knob
  • Two-way audio transmission for making video calls
  • Access to the safety channel, which creates a second output at -20 dB in case the main channel distorts
  • High-quality 24-bit / 48 kHz digital audio conversion

When using the VideoMic NTG as a USB microphone, plug your headphones into its 3.5mm output for convenient stereo headphone monitoring. Control the headphone volume via the gain knob on the bottom of the mic.

To enable effortless optimization of recording levels for any device, the VideoMic NTG boasts a continuously variable gain control and a helpful audio peak warning light. Whether you need mic level, line level, headphone level, or something in between, the right level is available at the turn of a knob. Press the dedicated button for the -20 dB pad to quickly lower the level when loud sound sources threaten to distort your recording.

The high-pass filter can be set to 75 Hz or 150 Hz to roll off low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic. Knowing that intelligibility is crucial, Rode outfitted the VideoMic NTG with a selectable high-frequency boost, which enhances detail and clarity in the treble range.

When source levels get unexpectedly louder, you risk overloading the recording. By pressing the dedicated safety channel button, you can set the mic's right channel to output 20 dB lower than the left channel. This lets you record a safety channel and the main signal to your camera at the same time.

The internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers up to 30 hours of run time and recharges via USB Type-C in about two hours. Since the VideoMic NTG can be charged while you use it, you can even simultaneously power and charge it with a USB battery pack.

When connected to the mic input of a compatible camera, the VideoMic NTG automatically turns on or off in response to the presence or absence of plug-in power. As you'd expect, the mic shuts off when it detects a loss in power, either from powering off or disconnecting the camera. Plus, there is a power button for manually turning the mic on or off.

Understanding that the rubber bands used in many shockmounts can snap and stretch, Rode chose to opt for a rugged Rycote Lyre suspension-style shockmount designed for attachment to a camera or boompole. This simplifies setup of the mic and inhibits the transfer of vibrations from the camera. The shockmount's sliding rail system lets shift the position of the mic forward or backward for perfect placement. Forget about messy cabling; the built-in cable management keeps the cord run tidy.

The VideoMic NTG includes a foam windscreen to minimize unwanted wind noise from light breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in outdoor environments, consider a furry windshield such as the optional Rode WS-11. Go for the optional Rode WS-Chroma, a set of two foam windshields (colored green and blue) suitable for chroma keying in postproduction—chroma key compositing can be used to remove the blue/green windscreen from the image.

Record with up to four microphones on a computer, with a fully featured digital mixer complete with level controls, solo and mute buttons, and one-click access to studio-quality audio processors. It also offers expansive features for both podcasters and streamers, including customizable sound pads and virtual channels for seamlessly connecting remote guests, integrating streaming applications, adding music beds, and more.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this mic suitable for capturing bird calls outdoors and, if so, what would be its useful range?

A: The Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Shotgun Microphone can be used for capturing bird calls outdoors. The optimum operating distance will vary depending on the environment. The mic is very directional and it is designed to pick up sounds from directly in front. In a quiet environment it will do a better job of picking up sounds that are further away. If there is a fair amount of noise in the background, you will be able to focus in on the sounds that are up to about 6 feet away most clearly. A good way to estimate what the mic will pick up is to use your ears and if your ears can hear the sound clearly, the mic should be able to hear similarly when pointed in that direction. If your camera has a headphone output you can use headphones to monitor the audio while recording.

Q: 2. How is the shielding on this mic? My original Rode Video Mic Pro picks up RF spray from my Hollyland transmitter.

A: From reviews of the VideoMic NTG, it seems that the shielding is improved over other models. Most reviews state that RF interference has not been a problem.

Q: 3. Will this work on an iPhone if connected to a lighting cable adapter?

A: Yes, per Rode you can use the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm adapter.

Q: 4. I use many Rode products and love them. I have the VideoMic NTG and wonder if there is a work around so that I can monitor my video recordings from my Sony 6400 camera. The camera does not have a headphone jack for this and the NTG doesn't have one either for monitoring video recording. Is there perhaps a two out jack where headphones can be plugged into one of the outs and the recording into the camera in the other one? This would be the final thing to make the NTG a mic that can be used by filmmakers.

A: In the scenario described, because the camera does not have a headphone jack, there is no real way to monitor audio recorded into the Sony a6400 Mirrorless Camera from the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone, or any microphone for that matter. Because the connection on the camera is input only, a splitter type adapter would not function to provide a headphone output connection.

Q: 5. What does NTG stand for? How about SPL?

A: Maximum SPL 120 dB SPL (1% THD) Might be: "Non Tangential Gradient "

Q: 6. can you plug 3.5mm into camera and also plugin usb for charging (and not use 3.5mm as monitor)?

A: Yes, the 3.5mm output jack on the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone can be connected to the mic input on a camera while the USB-C output is connected to a portable USB power bank for charging. You should not use a USB wall plug for charging or connect the mic to a computer for charging while using the 3.5mm output for recording to a camera as there can be noise introduced into the audio signal generated by the electrical line that will be recorded by the camera.

Q: 7. where can we find when a Rode specifically fitted dead cat will be available? Most any mic is unusable here in the field without one.

A: You can find one at B&H. This is the B&H part number B&H # RYSHFS7MCM1B.

Q: 8. what type power is needed for the operation? (5V, 48V)

A: The RODE VideoMic NTG runs off of its internal rechargeable battery. It can also run off of 2.5v plug-in power or USB bus power.

Q: 9. I am buying a shotgun mic for filmmaking & vlogging right now, but I will probably also record some music cover video in the future. Would this mic be a good choice for both intentions?

A: This is a solid all around mic. It will work very well for your intentions.

Q: 10. Does gain setting affect battery life?

A: No

[-20 dB] This mic has all the features you could want for a run and gun shooting setup.
My favorite feature is the duel levels recording, so if you peak on one channel you can just use the other channel.
Another awesome feature is the gain dial on the back of the mic. Great for dialing your audio if something needs adjusted on the fly.
Finally the auto on and off is quite amazing. I no longer have to worry about remembering to turn my mic on, as in the past with other mics I've recorded clips with no audio because of this.
Great product, RODE!
