The 16-stop, 46mm Tiffen Solar ND Filter 46mm 16-Stopfrom Tiffen Solar ND Filter 46mm 16-Stopis a solid ND filter with a 65,536x filter factor that provides an 16-stop exposure reduction. Its 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed while reducing the risk of overexposure. This means you can capture more detailed solar images than might be possible under normal conditions. By also limiting IR and UV light this filter helps ensure color-neutral images, and its multi-layer coating reduces glare.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Q: 1. I have a 32-64mm Fuji GFX zoom lens on a GFX 50R. Can this filter be used at full wide angle without vignetting with this lens? Thanks.

A: The B+W 77mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter will not vignette the Fuji 32-64mm lens. This is because the front of the filter is 82mm. By having a larger front than the mount, it reduces the risk of vignetting on wide angle lenses.

Q: 2. Can anyone explain the dot markings to stops on this filter?

A: I had this same question and decided to run some tests (using my Nikon D810). I did this inside with the lighting (more or less) constant. I ran three sets of tests: 1) in manual mode with auto ISO, I noted the ISO without the filter and with the filter positioned at each of the ten different dot makings; 2) In manual mode (and constant ISO) I set the aperture to zero out the meter without the filter and at each of the dot markings; and 3) In aperture priority mode, I noted the shutter speed without the filter and at each of the dot markings. The results varied somewhat depending on the test. Reported below is the average of the three methods. The first dot corresponded to 1.0 stops, second dot to 1.1 stops, third dot to 1.4 stops, fourth dot to 1.8 stops, fifth dot to 2.2 stops, sixth dot to 2.5 stops, seventh dot to 2.8 stops, eighth dot to 3.2 stops, ninth dot to 3.7 stops, and tenth dot to 4.1 stops. So, as others have said, the dots are just a guide.

Q: 3. Hi. Can this filter be used on a Leica 50mm APO-Summicron-M ASPH f/2.0 lens? Thank you.

A: The lens has a 39mm filter thread. This filter would not be compatible. B+W makes the same filter in 52mm. If you use a 39-52mm step up ring, then you will be able to use this filter on the Leica lens. Here is the step up ring: http://bhpho.to/1u0UKvfHere is the filter: http://bhpho.to/1qoJGa9

Q: 4. Will this filter cause vignetting on the Canon RF 35/1.8 (using a Canon RP body)?

A: This filter would be specific to wide angle lenses, so it would not vignette on a lens like the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8.

Q: 5. Will it fit inside of the Canon 200mm f/2?

A: If your camera lens has a diameter of 52mm, then it should fit....The lens mm diameter is compatible with any filter with the same mm diameter it claims to have. Hope this helps!

Q: 6. Can I use this on my Nikon wide-angle lens 10-24mm without vignette?

A: Most likely, no. The rim on this filter being the variable midel, is much wider than a standard ND would be. You definitely need to find a fixed stop ND for a wide angle. Even with that, you may still have slight vignetting at the 10mm end.

Q: 7. Has anyone tried the Variable 82mm on a sony 16-35GM2.8? I want to know if you saw any vignetting or any issues with it. I know the 24-70gm also has the same filter thread so I was wondering just how wide you can go with the filter beefore vignetting.

A: Today's Polarizers from quality manufacturers are all made to be thin to avoid vignetting on wide lenses. This one from B+W has the coveted Thin Brass Filter Ring. You will be good.

Q: 8. How much does the 46mm ND filter weigh? Is it safe to use on the Inspire X5?

A: I used it for years on the X5 and now all the time on my X7 lenses. Very well made!

Q: 9. I have a Batis 25mm. will this filter fit the lens, and also, will the original lens cap fit on top of this filter?

A: Yes, this will fit the 67mm filter threads of the ZEISS Batis 25mm f/2 Lens for Sony E. However, since this filter is made wider so as to avoid vignetting, you will need a 72mm lens cap. Here is a quality one to match your lens. B+W 72mm Pro Snap-On Lens Cap MFR #65-1065134 • BH #BWLC72

Q: 10. Can this filter fit the Sony 10-18mm wide-angle lens?

A: That is a very wide angle lens and I would suspect a vignette problem. The answer to that would be to buy a step-up ring and use the 77mm version of filter. Now you have a filter that will adapt to any lens you might have with the appropriate step-up ring. By the way, the 77mm and is often on sale for less than the 62mm.

[46 mm] I purchased this filter for the April 2024 eclipse, and it worked perfectly. You can see sunspots in my picture below towards the end of the eclipse! I was able to add it and remove it smoothly from the Canon 100-400mm mk2 lens, which turned out to be critical because I had to take the filter off during peak eclipse (totality). I've had filters before which were very difficult to remove; this was great.

[Aluminum] I pulled the trigger on the filter when the forecast called for clear skies for the recent eclipse. I used my Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L lens on my R5. The 82mm-77mm adapter allowed me to use the filter on it.

[0.09 lb] I wanted to take pictures with my Canon R7 and this allowed me to do just that - safely without hurting my eyes. The pictures were better than I hoped for since in our area there where periods of clouds with a few openings. I liked the cloud pictures since they shown color and depth.

[0.09 lb] This filter delivers great imagery of the sun! Brings out really good detail of sun spots and of course the eclipse images were fantastic. During totality, it was super easy to take the filter off quickly and put it right back on. Good quality and good imagery.
