The 16-stop, 55mm Tiffen Solar ND Filter 55mm 16-Stopfrom Tiffen Solar ND Filter 55mm 16-Stopis a solid ND filter with a 65,536x filter factor that provides an 16-stop exposure reduction. Its 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed while reducing the risk of overexposure. This means you can capture more detailed solar images than might be possible under normal conditions. By also limiting IR and UV light this filter helps ensure color-neutral images, and its multi-layer coating reduces glare.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello...what is the front filter thread size (i.e., for attaching other filters, etc). Thanks

A: The 67mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC nano Filter has a 72mm filter thread.

Q: 2. The description says that this filter features a thin, oversized mount which helps to reduce the likelihood to vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. To use this filter with a smaller diameter lens, what step down ring size would I have to use to be able to use it on a smaller lens diameter - - 77mm or 82 mm to hold this filter?

A: The size step-up ring that would be required for use on your lens would depend on the filter size of your lens. Unfortunately, you did not list the lens you own or its filter size. As the B+W 77mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC nano Filter has 77mm rear filter threads, you would need a step-up ring that has 77mm front filter threads. If you need assistance with locating the proper ring for your equipment, you would have to send an e-mail to askbh@bandh.com with the above information and we will assist you with your inquiry.

Q: 3. Will this filter work with the NiSi 150mm holder?

A: Yes the LEE Filters 150 x 150mm SW150 Solar Stopper will fit in a Nisi 150mm holder.

Q: 4. Can it be charged with Goal Zero solar panel?

A: Yes you can.

Q: 5. Does this filter have front threads so I can attach it to a matte box or an additional filter? Thanks!

A: Yes it does have a front thread of 77mm.

Q: 6. Can this filter fit the Sony 10-18mm wide-angle lens?

A: That is a very wide angle lens and I would suspect a vignette problem. The answer to that would be to buy a step-up ring and use the 77mm version of filter. Now you have a filter that will adapt to any lens you might have with the appropriate step-up ring. By the way, the 77mm and is often on sale for less than the 62mm.

Q: 7. Does this filter fit Stellina?

A: The Vaonis Solar Filter for Vespera lets you use the Vaonis Vespera Digital Telescope to observe our closest star during the day. Mount the filter on the end of the optical arm to see and photograph sunspots.

Q: 8. is there a filter holder for this 150 x 150 filter that will fit on a Nikon 300mm f2.8G lens?

A: Unfortunately, no. The SW150 filter holder pairs with adapters for common front filter thread diameters and adapters custom-designed to fit onto select ultra-wide lenses. I admit I do not own a Nikon 300mm f/2.8G. My understanding is that they use 52mm drop-in filters. If there is an available empty drop in filter holder capable of holding third party filters, your best option would be to buy a 52mm solar filter and drop that in. If that is not possible, then your best bet for using that lens would be to try rigging a DIY means of holding this filter to the front or, prefereably, using a different lens compatible with some type of solar filter. Best of luck.

Q: 9. How long does it take to charge the battery via solar, on average?

A: Doesnt fully charge it via solar, maybe 50% charge. To get full 100% best charges by USB port

Q: 10. Has anyone tried the Variable 82mm on a sony 16-35GM2.8? I want to know if you saw any vignetting or any issues with it. I know the 24-70gm also has the same filter thread so I was wondering just how wide you can go with the filter beefore vignetting.

A: Today's Polarizers from quality manufacturers are all made to be thin to avoid vignetting on wide lenses. This one from B+W has the coveted Thin Brass Filter Ring. You will be good.

[55 mm] I wanted to take pictures with my Canon R7 and this allowed me to do just that - safely without hurting my eyes. The pictures were better than I hoped for since in our area there where periods of clouds with a few openings. I liked the cloud pictures since they shown color and depth.

[Aluminum] I pulled the trigger on the filter when the forecast called for clear skies for the recent eclipse. I used my Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L lens on my R5. The 82mm-77mm adapter allowed me to use the filter on it.

[0.09 lb] I purchased this filter for the April 2024 eclipse, and it worked perfectly. You can see sunspots in my picture below towards the end of the eclipse! I was able to add it and remove it smoothly from the Canon 100-400mm mk2 lens, which turned out to be critical because I had to take the filter off during peak eclipse (totality). I've had filters before which were very difficult to remove; this was great.
