The 3-stop, 3.3 x 3.9" Tiffen 3-Stop Soft-Edge Graduated ND Filter 3.3x3.9"is a graduated neutral density filter that helps to specifically darken skies and other bright areas of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a soft-edged line of transition between the density and clear areas. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and the 0.9 optical density provides a 3 stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter is compatible with the Cokin P filter holder and measures 3.3 x 3.9" / 85 x 100mm.

Note: A vertical orientation filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this filter have IR Cut. Have you noticed any IR pollution affecting your image quality?

A: As per the manufacturer, this filter has no IR cut nor IR pollution when using it.

Q: 2. I am not certain whether I should use a neutral density or polarizing filter for the photography I do.At present, I shoot a lot of landscape, nature, waterfalls, lakes, ponds and close up I wish to shoot photos that are well contrasted and have that jump off the page type of distinct quality. Well saturated photos, vibrant colors, no wash outs are also my hope and objective. Is this level of neutrality serve my objectives. Should the ND and polarizer be graduated?. If so, why? I own a Nikon D90, 3000 and 7000What do you suggest?

A: I would suggest getting a polarizer for the type of image you want. A circular polarizer will saturate blues and enrich color. A circular polarizer is essentially 3 stops of a ND filter as it is, but it is rotate-able. A neutral density filter is more useful in applications where you would want to blur water or shoot wide open for long exposures. Take a look at the B+W 77mm Kaesemann XS-Pro Circular Polarizer MRC Nano Filter, which is one of the highest quality circular polarizers available: http://bhpho.to/1ke87X9

Q: 3. vertical or horizental, tell me the diffenrence use the product's photo?

A: A vertical orientation filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter, whereas a horizontally oriented graduated ND filter runs parallel to the long side of the filter.

Q: 4. What is the thickness of the filter?(I'm concerned to get vignetting in wide angle lenses)Does it rotate too?Thank you very much!

A: I am not completely sure of its thickness but it seems to be in the .5mm to 1.0 mm range. Very lightIt does not rotate.I use it with my Sigma 10-20mm lens and unless I use it with another filter it does not produce any vignetting. I have used it together with a polarizing filter and it produces some vignetting at 10mm but it disappears at 15mm.O hope this helps.

Q: 5. I am looking into buying this filter for shooting sunrises and sets where the mountains and forests are very shade compared to the sky. Should I go for something darker or lighter?

A: There is no definitive answer to your question based upon the information provided. Your question depends on the difference in correct exposure value between the mountains/forest and the sky. Each .3 of ND is equal to one stop of light loss. If the difference in exposure values is two stops, go with a graduated ND .6, if it is three stops then use a .9, etc. For best results, keep a few of these filters in your camera bag with varying ND densities.

Q: 6. Is this filter made of glass or plastic?

A: It's glass and I love this filter.

Q: 7. What is a graduated neutral density filter?Does the filter rotate? By this I mean, can I rotate the filter to high light certain areas?

A: A graduated neutral-density filter is an optical filter that has a variable light transmission. Typically half of the filter is of neutral density which transitions, either abruptly or gradually, into the other half which is clear. It is used to bring an overly-bright part of a scene into the dynamic range of film or sensor. For example, it can be used to darken a bright sky so that both the sky and subject can be properly exposed. There are typically two types of graduated ND filters, which are hard edge and soft edge. This particular Tiffen Graduated 0.6 ND filter is a feathered graduated ND filter, which means that there is a natural-appearing taper between the density and clear areas of the filter. This filter does not rotate.

Q: 8. What is the best holder for the 4.x4 graduated filter. Because of its thickness what brand works?

A: Cokin Z Filter Holder works fine, plasticity. Better is Sioti, aluminum, plastic and better made. Newer filter holder slots are for the now popular 2mm glass. This filter is thick, 5mm? I own one, bought at B

Q: 9. Thank you!I suppose you meant 5mm to 10mm of thikness/height of the ring, right?

A: The thickness of the filter ring is .265 inch

Q: 10. Tiffen 62mm Graduated 0.6 ND Filter - will it work with the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000?

A: Yes. The Tiffen 62mm Graduated 0.6 ND Filter, will work screwed onto the front of the lens on the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000.

[0.2 lb] Well built Tiffen filter, what else to say? Prob a .9 would be a better choice for bright day, but happy purchase.

[6 x 5.6 x 1.2"] Thank You for your excellent service. The ND filter arrived and was to be a gift, so use hasn't occurred yet. I just like B&H- rather than some of the other vendors. Sincerely, C.

[6 x 5.6 x 1.2"] I took this filter to Yosemite and it helped greatly with helping me achieve a balance between the darkened mountains and lighter sky.

[6 x 5.6 x 1.2"] It's a great way to get pro images with a camera that's smaller than a pro lens and costs less than a pro video cam battery. I've used the 4x4 version with my pro cine & video cameras so I had to get one for my handi-cam camcorder. My only caution is to keep it squeaky clean! With a wide-angle lens, every spec of dust on the filter is a HUGE sploch in the image.

[6 x 5.6 x 1.2"] A well-made filter. Note that 0.6ND is really light. Filtered area has a very slight warm tint.

[6 x 5.6 x 1.2"] This is a big, heavy, tough filter. I think this will be the last ND filter I will ever buy. Kinda surprised how thick 4mm is. Wouldn't shock me if it was bullet proof. Glad I went with the glass filter, I had plastic filters ,they are cheap, but scratches too easily.

[0.2 lb] I use this filter for scenery photography, where part of the area to be photographed is over exposed. I can't image going in the field with this filter.

[6 x 5.6 x 1.2"] as with any tiffen filter, which consists of 95% of filters i own, this was a great buy. they are hefty filters, which have saved lenses from breaking on occasion, yet it doesn't obscure the light. the grad nd .6 was a great buy for my digital and color film work for bringing my skies within my 5 stop range. a must have for digital or slide film landscapes.
