Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Have there been any design changes addressing the stiffness of the focusing ring since these reviews?

A: There have been no design changes to the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Nikon F since it was released, to our knowledge.

Q: 2. Will the EF Auto Aperture version work with Sigma MC-21 (EF to L Mount Adapter)? Note EF AA Version does not have Aperture Ring on the Lens.

A: Yes. All on-board circuitry and data stays in place.

Q: 3. Can this lens be used on an nikon d7000?

A: Yes. The Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Nikon F can be used on the D7000.

Q: 4. What is it's filter thread size? Is it 67 mm, like their lens made for Sony cameras?

A: Yes, that lens uses a 67mm filter thread.

Q: 5. Will this product works well on the Laowa 12mm with the magic shift converter for Sony? Will there be more vignetting than usual?

A: I don't have experience with this on the magic shift, It mounts on the front bayonet, The magic shift appears to be rear mounted. So--I don't think it will interfere, bit that is not definitive.

Q: 6. Can this filter holder be used on other lenses through an adapter ring, or is it strictly made for the Laowa 12mm?

A: I have a bad experience with the Nisi 10 stop square ND filter on this kit attached to the Laowa 12 mm f2.8. There is a round double strip of light in the picture and it is because the filter does leak some light in the holder to the lens, despite the filter comes with a round strip on the borders, to prevent that leakage. If there is anyone who experience this problem, it would great to get some input. Jose

Q: 7. For the Canon R6, I'm considering the RF (manual aperture) version vs. the EF (auto aperture) version (with Canon adapter). I have no EF lenses and understand that Canon meters wide open and then stops down for the shot. Besides convenience, what are pros/cons of manual vs. auto aperture for macro on a manual focus lens? If there are auto aperture advantages, are they outweighed by any effects of the adapter?

A: The benefit of having an auto exposure on the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon EF (Auto Aperture) is that you will be able to see through the lens because the camera will auto open the exposure to the widest it can go. If you have a manual exposure like on the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon RF you will need to open the aperture manually.

Q: 8. Will it transfer exif data in a sony a7r iii ?

A: It does not. The Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Magnification Ultra-Macro APO does not have electrical contacts and does not transmit EXIF data to the camera.

Q: 9. Is the len hood detachable? Can I use a generic 100mm square filter holder with generic 100m sqaure filter on it? Thanks.

A: The petal-shaped lens hood is built-in, not removable, and not reversible. Unfortunately, this means generic or third-party filter holders won't work. Laowa has a magnetic filter system for the lens coming soon, and it seems that will be the only way to get 4x4" or 4x5.65" size filters to work with the lens.

Q: 10. Can this filter used with 9mm f5.6 FullFrame?

A: Yes Venus Optics 100mm Magnetic Filter Holder Set with Frame for Laowa Zero-D Shift 9mm Lens is for the 9mm 5.6 FF RL full frame lens.

[7 x 5.8 x 1.5"] The lens is excellently made. It is a bit difficult to use because of the lack of image stabilization however. For the price, this can't be beat.

[0.555 lb] I use a macro often and always use it in manual aperture and manual focus. This lens works great on a Nikon Z because of the Focus Peaking in the optical viewfinder.

[7 x 5.8 x 1.5"] This lens is everything Laowa promises it to be. Please see the picture I have uploaded so see how sharp this lens is while rendering saturated colors. Yes, it is a manual lens and it requires a tripod to achieve best results, but this lens is also excellent for subjects other than macro photography. Congrats Laowa! I can highly recommend this lens with confidence.

[7 x 5.8 x 1.5"] After shooting with Canon L and Sony macro lenses I wasn't expecting much from this lower priced lens. I've been impressed and the 2x aspect is very beneficial at times. If you don't need AF this is a strong consideration.

[7 x 5.8 x 1.5"] I used to use this for macro work exclusively, and then the astro bug bit me and it's been perfect as a wide field telescope. Focus is smooth and damped, and stays reliably in star focus without needing tape (usually). I'd recommend using with a Luminance filter at least to remove IR defocus, but otherwise can't recommend enough. Between this and the 135 f/2 from Rokinon, it's never been easier to get good images of wide field objects

[7 x 5.8 x 1.5"] Super sharp! Can be a challenge at times keeping still long enough to grab the shot. Just a hair of movement and you lose the subject. But the results when you get the shot are worth the efforts!

[0.555 lb] For the money this lens is pure gold. Full manual mode so you must have a basic knowledge of photography. Not weatherproof so be careful. I've seen a lot of reviews bashing this lens but I feel as if those reviews are from inexperienced photographers. If you're looking for a great Macro lens at a smaller price tag this is the ONE. Add a flash and a diffuser and BAM you will create some jaw dropping images.

[7 x 5.8 x 1.5"] I was looking for a Z mount lens for my Z50 as my Tamron 90mm 1:1 was not a G2 model, and didn't work consistantly with the mirrorless body. After many reviews and analysis on the subjects I try to shoot with a macro lens, and my current skillset, I purchased one of these Venus Laowa 100mm 2:1.

I mounted it via the Venus mount collar sold as an option. The collar works great if attached to the correct position on the lens. Althought some of the reviews on that device are negative, I found it as advisertised.

The first day I had the lens I shot some test subjects and discovered quickly that a macro focus rail would be a HUGE help with this lens. I recommend ordering one with this lens should you purchase it.

I ordered one, and put the whole system together today.

Attached is a 2:1 shot of George Washington's eye on a $1 bill. I didnt focus stack this image - obviously - but I think the quick work demostrates what this lens can do.

As stated some macro experience will make this lens more enjoyable, but it seems to be a nice lens to add to the bag especially given the price.

[0.555 lb] The Laowa 100mm, combined with the Sony A7IV, represents a great macro solution. This lens is built like a tank. The ability to zoom in at 2:1 offers an advantage over most other macro lens offerings. I found the Laowa to be incredibly sharp from f/2.8 - f/11. Even at f/16, diffraction barely impacts photo quality.
The Focus Peaking and Zoom features on the Sony A7IV work well with the Laowa to ensure your subject is in focus.
Macro photography with a manual-focus lens such as the Laowa does require some patience and practice, however, so expect to spend some time refining your technique.
The only improvements I would suggest would be: 1. A slightly firmer clicking mechanism for the aperture ring and, 2. Changing the gear ratio of the manual focus ring to provide more incremental adjustments.

[0.555 lb] This lens is incredible for getting so close to the product and still getting focus. The depth of field is crazy and it makes such cool images. The focusing ring is really firm and doesn't have auto focus but overall a great lens.
