Relatively small and lightweight, the DZOFilm VESPID 40mm T2.1 Lens PL EF Mountsis part of the VESPID series of lenses from DZOFilm and is well suited for independent and high-end full-frame cinematography. The lens has an 80mm front diameter, allowing it to work with virtually any cine-style matte box. The small size makes this lens an attractive option when working with drones and gimbals, as well as when shooting handheld or run-and-gun. The interchangeable PL mount and included EF mount allow you to use the fully manual lens on a variety of modern and vintage cine cameras, while the full-frame coverage supports sensors that have an image circle up to 46.5mm for use on cameras with sensors up to full-frame without vignetting.

The 16-blade iris, which is consistent throughout the VESPID prime lens lineup, creates round out-of-focus highlights that have a more natural appearance and contribute to the lens's natural-looking bokeh. The focus ring features a 270° of rotation for precise focus pulls, and the iris ring a generous 64° of rotation. Cine-style gear rings on the focus and iris rings make the lens compatible with cine-style lens accessories such as follow focus units, lens motors, and lens control systems. The lens has a magnetically attached rear filter for ND filters.

This 40mm lens has an image circle that covers a full-frame sensor. When mounted on a camera with a Super35 sensor, it provides you with a tighter shot than if mounted on a camera with a full-frame sensor.

The lens comes with an interchangeable PL mount with an EF mount included.

The lenses provide an organic look that is a cross between the modern-day cold and technically precise aesthetic and vintage cinema lenses.

The coated optics help provide natural-looking contrast while helping to control veiling glare and specular highlights, preventing flares from washing out your image.

The 16-blade iris makes for a natural-looking bokeh and creates smooth rounded out-of-focus highlights.

The modern mechanical design allows each lens to have a small size and light weight yet share the same 80mm front diameter and common gear positions for fast lens changes.

The rear of the lens has a magnetically attached rear filter that accepts optional ND filters that help you control exposure without affecting the iris setting or changing your depth of field.

The front of the lens has a 77mm filter thread, allowing you to use optional filters directly on the lens, which is useful when you need filtration when shooting without a matte box.

A minimum focusing distance of 12" allows you to get up close to your subject.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what kind of resolution can handle?

A: It will handle the amount of resolution that the sensor you put it in front of will handle. It's a cinema lens, designed for optical resolution available via sensor.

Q: 2. Will these Vespid primes (EF mount) fit BMPCC4K with Speedbooster?

A: Yes it will. This is an EF lens that covers a full frame sensor. It can be used with an EF to MFT Speedbooster.

Q: 3. Does this lens have a lot of distortion? And if I converted the Canon 5D Mark III to PL Mount would it hit the mirror?

A: The DZOFilm VESPID 35mm T2.1 Lens (PL & EF Mounts) has very minimal distortion. It comes with an EF mount that would not protrude into the camera. If you use a PL to EF mount adapter, the DZOFilm VESPID 35mm T2.1 Lens would work with standard PL lens adapters.

Q: 4. Can I interchange the mount to a PL mount using the PL mount adapter from DZO?

A: The DZOFilm VESPID 75mm T2.1 Lens (EF Mount) (B&H# DZ75VEF) has an interchangeable mount (between EF and PL using DZO's mounts) and may also be used with other mounts when using DZO's Octopus adapters.

Q: 5. Will these Vespids (EF mount) fit BMPCC4k with Speedboosters?

A: Yes they will.

Q: 6. what's the different between Canon EF and EF mount?

A: Two different locking systems. PL mount systems grip the lens firmly with a four-point friction lock instead of the EF mount's leaf-spring.

Q: 7. What is the length of the 25mm Lens with the front and back caps on?

A: With lens caps on it measured to be 5 and 3/8".

Q: 8. Do these lenses have the same lens support mount that comes with the Pictor Zooms?

A: No, lens support like those used on the DZOFilm Pictor 20-55mm and 50-125mm T2.8 Super35 Zoom Lens Bundle (PL Mount and EF Mount, Black) does not come in the package for the DZOFilm VESPID 35mm T2.1 Lens (PL & EF Mounts).

Q: 9. If I use this lens on a red komodo will there be some crop correct? This lens is made for full frame camera?

A: Yes, a crop factor will be applied when using the DZO Vespid full-frame lens with the RED Komodo, since the camera has a Super35 sensor.

Q: 10. Is it autofocus ?

A: No, the DZOFilm VESPID 35mm T2.1 Lens (PL Mount) is a manual lens, it does not have autofocus.

[40mm] I LOVE this lens. It gives you a beautifully wide angle, but it doesn't give you any noticeable distortion. In the attached pictures you can see my go-to rig and you can see a screenshot from a recent shoot I did. That screenshot hasn't been colored yet, and there was a ndfilter over the image. You can just see how much width you get, without getting that warped distortion look. Don't get me wrong, I like that look sometimes, but it's really nice to be able to pull off a beautifully wide look like this, without any distortion. Also the build quality of this lens is AMAZING. It feels incredible to wrack focus, and I just love the buttery smooth background blur you get. Thank you DZO Film. I love you guys!! And thank you B&H for always sending me my gear super quick and super well packaged.

[16] I have been using the Vespid Lenses for both Personal and Professional use and I have been more than happy. They have a sturdy/solid build and design that you expect to find on a professional lens as well as putting out gorgeous imagery. The focus pills are buttery smooth and the lens produces nice bokeh. I also appreciate markings on the ACs side of the lens as well, small detail but a nice added touch. Can't wait to complete the set. Good pick ups for anyone wanting to get professional style Cine primes without spending a years salary for one.

[46.5 mm] I bought this 21mm lens along with the 40mm and 75mm Vespid primes. I'm quite happy with these lenses, and the 21mm is a useful focal length for both Super35 and Full Frame sensors. Build quality is very good, rings turn smoothly, weight and size is good and all lenses match in color and contrast. The only thing missing is weather sealing, which I think is a must have for any lens that will be put to professional use. Other than that, I'm very please with Vespid primes.

[46.5 mm] 35mm is a focal length I used quite often on both super 35 and full frame cameras. I sometimes wanted just a bit more reach and shallower DOF. The 40mm length achieves this quite well, and may reduce my need for a 50mm.

I have been using the Rokinon Cine DS lenses for years, and wanted to step up to the Vespid lenses after seeing many good examples and positive reviews. I won't claim there is a dramatic night and day difference, as the Rokinons are not nearly as bad as some would have you believe. I will say the Vespids have a thicker look to them, with richer blacks and more overall character. They have much less breathing than the Rokinons, too. Of course, the build quality is substantially nicer, so I expect them to far outlive the Rokinon lenses.

I have a full set of Rokinons, and I will gradually replace most of them with the Vespid lenses. I currently have the 21mm, 40mm and 75mm, which cover the majority of my shooting needs. I will likely get the 90mm macro and possibly the 16mm wide. Overall, the Vespids are as good as people say, and worth a look (or rent if you're curious).

[T22] This lens and the other DZO lens I own are amazing for the price. They are so much better then my previous SLR Magic micro primes. They function like much expensive cine primes. I use them on my Fuji X-T4 and it's a great match. I would definitely recommend DZO products.

[80 mm] I bought this lens along with the 100mm and now I'm waiting for the 25mm to be in stock since I like the look so much! The lens is sharp but not clinical like the sigma arts and has a beautiful roll-off from sharp details into the bokeh. Great colors and texture to the image with extremely minimal chromatic aberration (I've only seen it come up with extremely blown out background behind the subject). This is a HUGE difference from the Rokinon DSX which had such bad CA that most back-lit footage was unusable. Only cons to this lens are the weight and the extremely long focus throw if you're not shooting in a controlled set - the focus throw is definitely not ideal for fast paced environments, but still workable. All in all definitely pleased with these guys.
