The SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF lens is a 400mm catadioptric optical design super telephoto lens with a fixed f/8 aperture, which offers a compact alternative to standard telephoto lenses. It's lightweight and compact design fits easily inside a pocket or small bag and is suitable for travel, wildlife, and outdoor photography.

  • Manual focus catadioptric optical design telephoto lens with fixed f/8 aperture, which is compatible with select camera focus peaking systems and in-body multi-axis advanced image stabilization systems.
  • Multi-layer anti-reflection coating for efficient light intake and reduced flare, plus high-reflectivity silvered coating and a protective antioxidant layer on the back side of mirrored surfaces for long performance life.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 45.3" and magnification 0.4x can capture small objects, while the 400mm focal length reduces the possibility of casting a shadow on the subject.
  • Catadioptric design and construction creates a smooth and unusual donut-shaped bokeh.
  • Wide focus ring provides smooth rotation range of 270°.

Extending the effective focal length of the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens, the 2x Extender increases the lens's magnification by 2x for a narrower field of view. In effect, this extender doubles the effective focal length of the lens, turning your 400mm lens into an 800mm optic.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Regarding previous question between vivitar 500mm and this one, how much is the difference on optical quality, when saying this one is better? And how much distance difference does the 100mm make?

A: This lens is multi-coated against lens flare and reflections, which makes it better than the Vivitar 500mm T-Mount lens. Having the added range on the Vivitar lens may not seem like much, but it could help when you need to get a bit closer to the subject.

Q: 2. I don't see the Nikon D700 listed under the compatibility list even though it uses the F Type lens...is the D700 not compatible for some reason, or only with limited function unlike the other models listed?

A: Although the manufacturer has not tested the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens with 2x Extender Kit for Nikon F with the D700, there should be no issue using them together.

Q: 3. Is this lens gas-filled as a hedge against atmospheric aberation?

A: No, the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for FUJIFILM X is not a gas-filled lens.

Q: 4. So what is the MM equivalent for a Fujifilm XH-1 or XPro-3?

A: The Fuji cameras have a 1.5 crop factor, so this lens will have an angle of view similar to a 600mm lens. It will still be a 400mm magnification.

Q: 5. What is the actual weight of the lens (including the rear mount adapter)?

A: The following unit weighs in at 0.80 lbs.

Q: 6. Does this lens come with a protector filter as showed in the photo of it on this page?

A: The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens does not come with a filter but it can use any 67mm filter such as this Hoya: https://bhpho.to/3xlGMt1

Q: 7. What is the total length and weight with the adapter?

A: The length of the the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Canon RF with the included mount adapter would be 3.43 in (87 mm) in length. The mount adapter by itself is 0.4 in (10 mm) in length.

Q: 8. How does this lens perform for dark sky photography being f8? Thank you.

A: If you are looking for a telephoto lens to only capture a small portion of the night sky, then the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Sony E may be used for your planned usage needs, regardless of the lens' aperture. Usually, when photographing the sky at night, you are not using your aperture for exposure needs as you would not notice depth of field differences when photographing the sky focused at infinity. To control your exposure, most often your shutter speed will be your main exposure component (often using BULB mode).

Q: 9. I just got this lens for an Olympus EM1-ii. Can't seem to get the focus peaking to work. Works fine with the one other manual focus lens I have. Is there some limitation with being 400mm or f/8?

A: According to Olympus, they state this must be an isolated lens issue. There is no in-camera reason for lack of focus peaking. You simply need to customize a button to focus peaking usage. Tap the selected customized button to turn on focus peaking, and tap the button again to turn off the focus peaking feature. If there is still no focus peaking, then it is really a lens issue as focus peaking depends on contrast to work; no electrical lens contacts are needed.

Q: 10. Does this come with a protective case?

A: The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens with 2x Extender Kit does not come with a case.

[Manual Focus] the lens is very sharp, but it is a manual focus on my Nikon 7200

[2.085 lb] For the price, the Tokina 400mm f/8 Reflex lens is a niche product for photographers who know what to expect from such a beast. The lens is, of course, manual focus, which is easily done on a mirrorless camera with viewfinder magnification. The lens delivers images that are a bit soft and low in contrast, exactly what I expected. But, the image does sharpen up a bit in post processing. The bokeh is unique to this sort of optical design, and can be surprising to those who do not expect it. The lens is quite compact for the 400mm focal length, and relatively light weight.
I am giving it 5 stars because it is exactly what I expected, not because it is some sort of cheap, screaming bargain. It will be a fun toy to use for long reach.

[67 mm (Front)] I waited for this lens for couple of month. But it was worth it. I am using my Tokina on Fujifilm X-T3. The lens is light and compact. Focus ring is smooth. But depth of field is quite shallow and you need to really feather it. Reflector design limits the sharpness, I guess, but I took test photos only without a tripod yet. Perhaps on with a tripod, good lighting and precise focusing, sharpness will be on par with the refractors.

[6° 8'] Because I never had the funds to get one of those high powered expensive lenses years ago I found a cheep 500mm reflex lens. With practice I was able to get good to great pictures with it so I decided to try the Tokina SZX, also far less expensive than those dream lenses. It is actually a bit easier to focus than the old reflex lens and does it ever capture great pictures! It also feels like a quality lens and isd so smooth. If you want more power and don't have a thousand bucks give this Tokina 400mm a try, you won't be disapointed.

[0.4x] I love this lens. I use it on a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K and also Canon 5D Mk4. It's great for macro and long-distance shooting. The bokeh looks cool and the lens has some character to it. I've had some good success filming stock footage of animals, sky (moon), insects, objects and scenes as well as doing sports photography with it (baseball). Other sports that don't have fixed positions would be more challenging because of the narrow depth of field.

Pros:
-Very long reach.
-Very lightweight compared to other lenses in it's focal length.
-Very small compared to other lenses in its focal length.
-Affordable
-Less common bokeh shape

Cons:
-Aperture fixed at f8
-Very delicate focus control
-Very narrow depth of field
-Fully manual
-Must use a tripod (no stabilization)

[400mm] I’m impressed with the quality of the photos and the ability to take great photos of birds and other objects handholding this lens. I’ts not for the point and shoot crowd. You have to understand how to focus this lens and work with the narrow depth of field, and you have to know how to shoot manual mode. Once you are comfortable with those items the lens really delivers some incredible photos...

[400mm] A very good mirror lens with manual focus

[6° 8'] I am an experienced reflex lens shooter, so I knew the benefits and drawbacks before I purchased.

Prepare to use a tripod and shoot in good light. And be ready to do a little more work to get the shot you want. Those who remain patient and practice can achieve excellent results.

I bought this lens for my Micro 4/3 kit because it was lightweight and small. It can easily be taken on a long hike in hot weather. This is really important to me, as I often shoot birds in a tropical environment.

It is a well-built lens with a smooth focus ring. The contrast and sharpness will be better than expected if good technique is used.

Know what you are buying, then go out and enjoy it. I'm a big fan!
