[1 x Snoot] I've been shopping for a while for an affordable LED light to use for interviews. A salesman at B&H recommended this light and I've been very impressed. It's much brighter than I expected and I love the ability to dial in the exact brightness and color temperature that I want. Plus, it comes with barn doors, batteries and a charger.

[1 x Snoot] Hard not to love this light. Nice and soft. Has decent power for its size, right through the gamut of light temperature. The only drawback is that it's a bit heavy -- might not be ideal for a travel light, and definitely not run and gun shooting.

[1 x Snoot] I purchased this for our team after 8 years with our previous LED lights. It's smaller, but brighter; runs longer on the same batteries; has a diffuser and barn doors; has a proper yoke for mounting onto 3/8 studs; is very well built; has a great set of controls; and the remote was an added bonus.

Love the size because it fits into tight places and is easy to pack and carry. The AC power cable is LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGGG which is a good thing. And as others have said the remote works anywhere. We never packed it at first but when we started mounting these overhead we found we can't live without the remote to adjust a light while it's four feet above our main subject.

The only drawbacks we've found so far are the locking mechanisms for the barn doors and diffuser. Sometimes they lock sometimes they don't, but we're not going to lower the rating because of it. There is some .... some bleed out from the sides but again, that's controllable and nit picky.

We have dropped one from about 6 feet and the light survived, but the barn doors were TOAST. ikan has informed us that the light is so popular that ordering a replacement will take a week.


But that's it! Those are so far the only issues we can find with the Onyx OYB5 so far and they're all small compared to what we get with the unit.


Compared to the competition everything is about on par. Some will cost more and give you V-mount or Gold Mount power options. Other brands will make slightly larger units. During our research we found the casing being used for another brand but the LED count was really low (as was the price)

Ordering a fleet of Onyx lights!

[1 x Snoot] All in all this light is a solid value. It gives you the option to put out a lot of hard light or add your choice of diffusion levels with your own materials. Bi color makes it flexible and the Sony type batteries make powering it affordable. Two of the larger bats will run it about a half a day if you turn it off when not needed.

[1 x Snoot] I purchased two of these lights and they are fantastic. Very portable, plenty bright, and they have great battery life. Can't beat this light at this price point. An added bonus is the power adapters have very long cables. All in all, I am very pleased with these lights.

[1 x Snoot] These are a huge improvement over our Ikan iLed 312s. They are great, but in smaller settings where you aren't fighting light. The Onyx kit is great, plenty of light for interviews, and they can work outside! They're no HMI, but they throw more light than other LED lights we've used. Battery life is pretty good with the supplied batteries - about 50% down with about 75 minutes of full power on time. The Presto soft boxes are nice touch and soften the light well. They're harder to fold up than your bounce panel, but it all fits nicely in the bag. The only drawback is that this is no 'light' kit. Pretty heavy bag, even with the stands in the smaller bag... but it pays off with the quality of the lights. There is no lack of sturdiness in the lights or the stands.

[1 x Snoot] Love working with these lights. Dimmable and fade-able color temperature is so efficient, can't really do without it anymore. Well made, sturdy, quality product.

[1 x Snoot] I just received this light from an IKAN vendor I purchased from at NAB for 25% off. I did have a wait a little while since it was a prototype, but I just had a feeling it would be an amazing portable LED light. And I was right! So glad I made this decision! The option to use L-series batteries is SUPER helpful! For this documentary at the Hill Air Force Base we had to move fast going all over the Museum to get B-roll of all the planes and helicopters, and so when I told the director that I had a light that can run off batteries (because all of his do not and I was just his sound guy) and that I brought it just in case of no time to look for outlets. And boy he LOVED the light! Even the camera operator said he should purchase one! Very lightweight, decent throw, small, soft diffusion, and of course Bi-color! I will DEFINITELY buy this again!
