Based on a classic optical design from more than 80 years ago, the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Nikon Z Lensfrom Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Nikon Z Lensis a unique slightly longer-than-normal-length prime lens for Nikon Z-mount cameras. Working in conjunction with the unique optical design is a bright f/1.9 maximum aperture, along with a manual focus design, that benefits the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. The aperture setting, along with a 14-blade diaphragm, also greatly affects the quality of bokeh, with wide-open settings generating a distinct swirly bokeh quality, and stopped down settings producing a more detailed, yet smooth blur. In regard to the optical layout, a simple five-element, four-group construction is featured, along with the use of Schott glass to produce a high degree of clarity. An O'Hara Anti Reflex Coating is also applied to reduce surface reflections, minimize flare, and increase contrast. Additionally, the lens features an anodized aluminum housing that is durable, lightweight, and contributes to smooth, silent focusing performance.

Slightly longer-than-normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used on APS-C-format models where it will provide an 87mm equivalent focal length.

Fast f/1.9 maximum aperture allows for extensive control over depth of field, for working with selective focus techniques, and also benefits working in low-light conditions.

The optical design uses a five-element, four-group layout in which the central dispersion element is surrounded by two groups of converging elements, and the rear element has a biconvex converging design to produce notable smoothness and clarity.

Schott glass is used for high clarity and contrast, and each of the elements feature an O'Hara Anti Reflex Coating to suppress lens flare and ghosting for color neutrality.

Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 2' away.

Fourteen diaphragm blades contribute to a smooth and distinct bokeh quality, which can be greatly adjusted by varying the aperture setting. When working at the maximum aperture, a unique swirly quality is present in out-of-focus elements, and when working with stopped down settings, a creamier bokeh quality is produced with greater detail in the blurred regions.

Front 52mm filter thread is consistent throughout the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz version II lens series.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Your website indicates that this lens is compatible with (and designed for use with) the Leica M7. But you indicate elsewhere in your website that this lens is not rangefinder-coupled. So, how is this lens to be focussed when mounted on a Leica M7 (other than with approximate focus on the distance scale)?

A: The Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 75mm f/1.9 II Lens for Leica M is not rangefinder coupled. You do have to use the distance scale.

Q: 2. When used with the Z8, will Focus peaking and zebra stripes be possible?

A: Focus peaking and zebra strips are a camera feature of the Nikon Z8 and can be used with any lens such as the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Lens for Nikon Z.

Q: 3. Hi, which mount would allow for the most compatibility with various cameras using an adapter? Thanks.

A: Every camera company has their own mount and therefore there is no one adapter to buy. The Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Lens for Sony E can be used with any Sony E mount camera.

Q: 4. does this lens output exif data?

A: The Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Lens for Sony E does not output exif data.

Q: 5. The photo shows f16 and the text says f22 for max?? Which is it??

A: The minimum aperture is f/22, what you see in the photo is the depth of field scale, not the aperture ring. Basically it is not particularly necessary to show f/22 on the DOF scale.

Q: 6. What is lens magnification factor?

A: This lens has minimum focus distance of 2.46 ' - but it is not a macro lens

Q: 7. Does this do autofocus at all or just manual?

A: This is a manual focus lens that is not able to autofocus.

Q: 8. Is the M version rangefinder coupled?

A: Due to the unique focal length of this lens, rangefinder focusing is not supported; manual focusing must be done using live view or zone focusing techniques.

Q: 9. Is it rangerfinder coupled?

A: This lens is not rangefinder coupled.

Q: 10. In the specs, it is put forth that the angle of view is 20 degrees. This should be about 40 degrees. Is there something wrong?

A: For a 58mm lens focused at infinity used on a full-frame 36x24mm sensor, the angle of view across the width of the sensor would be approximately 34.48°, while the angle of view across the height of the sensor would be approximately 23.38°, and the diagonal angle of view across the sensor would be approximately 40.91°.

[f/1.9] As said by some expects many times in past - 'You Love it or you hate it'. I am not the technical person to do dissection of lens and come up with details about how it is made and what’s magical inside it to get Soap Bubble Effect (dreamy bokeh)

For me, I wanted to lost myself in the dreamy bokeh. That’s the wish and it came true when I found 1 last copy left in stock at B&H. I had a chat with the service representative and ordered it immediately. I was shocked to get it in mere 7 days in lockdown time (Covid Crisis). Its shipped from USA to UK, though Germany is near UK, but the manufacturer didn’t have this in stock. I had concerns about shipment but it came before time.

Lens is well made and feels solid to handle. Its packaging is super awesome. The way it’s packed is very nice. When you unbox the package, you may find the outbox is just a piece of cardboard. Beauty lies inside the box, when the first layer was uncovered, I was mesmerized by the main box. It reminded me of the box in which my mum used to keep gold jewellery in India. A velvet packing inside with lens and lens hood. Lens hood has got threads to fix to the lens.

The Aperture ring is very smooth to operate. It's click-less and a boon for videographers. See attached videos. It is super easy to use an aperture ring to increase or decrease the f-stop values.

For me, I am not going to go beyond F4 as I bought this lens for art work especially Macro and also for some artistic model shoots. I got his lens for soap bubble effect and I will keep it mostly at F2.8 for all my Macro work. At F2.8 it's super awesome, it generates magical soap bubbles. It’s all a matter of the direction of the light source and you are done, rest is magic of aperture blades and elements within the lens. You make composition, get focus by physically moving forward or backward if doing handheld photography and then just click the shutter button.

Focus ring is smoo with a ideal kind of resistance which makes it a joy to operate

[14] yes, it can have chromatic abberation. yes, it can be hard to focus. yes, it has character, and yes, i love this lens. if you are looking for something a little different from all the clinically correct lenses out there, try this one.

[Nikon Z] This is a great optic, full of character that inspires you as you work with it. If I could wish for one improvement, however, it would be to decrease its MFD. If you could shoot closer to the subject this lens would be legendary.... Still, I highly recommend this lens!

[f/1.9] How do you activate the close focus front moving element on this lens?

5
28/06/2024

[20.3°] The small size of the lense make it easy to carry in your photo bag.

This lense enables not only great bokeh but provides a very good sharpness and is very sensitive to white balance variations.
Try it and you will enjoy it immediately.

[58mm] I ove the way this Lydith renders, excellent detail wide open but with a soft glow. Stop it dow to f/5.6 and it get amazingly sharp, although still a bit mushy in the corners. It is proving outstanding for head/shoulders portraits wide open and nice for landscapes stopped down to f/5.6 to f/11. Its optical design is old but then that what I bought it for. Fabrication quality is excellent, beautifully made. My old wish would be that they make it rangefinder couple for Leica M cameras (none of M digital cameras support live view). One buys this lens for what it is, and it is not like a late version Leica lens yet it has its own qualities one can take advantage of. Considering it is a lens made in Germany by skilled craftsmen just as Leica lenses are, the price is not bad at all. Just realize what you are buying is old school optical design in a beautiful modern package.

[52 mm (Front)] This reprint lens has some advantages over the original model.
- Shortest shooting distance
- No mount adapter required
- Low lens distortion (personal impression)
And, the bubble bokeh comes out firmly as well as the old one.
I like it very much to exclude its price.

[f/22] Nice lens with nice bubble bokeh. Nice vintage effect. Creates a dreamy world or sceneray. You need to get used to the manual settings and handling (nowadays where everything is automatic) but it works quite fast. Delivery of B&H was very fast even from the US to Switzerland. I can highly recommend the lens and as well B&H.
