The Tiffen 58mm Warm Polarizer Filtercan be applied to create a warm cast over an entire image while helping to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

The warming effect of this filter can be obtained under daylight when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected. This filter's overall coloration reflects a mired shift value of +45.

A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain an additional quarter wave plane. The addition of a quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, in-camera auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus, is non-coated, and has approximately 40% average light transmission. It is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring that can be rotated in order to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface

Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light

Can add a warm cast over an entire image when used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors

Polarizing effect is strongest when used at a 90° angle from the sun

Recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus

Non-coated

Approximately 40% average light transmission

3x filter factor reduces exposure by 1.6 stops

Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity

Made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch

Aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight

Filter ring can be rotated to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect

58mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters

Plastic filter case for storage and transport

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Just to be sure, does the 49mm filter have a revolving feature as previous filters or is it a fixed immovable one?

A: Yes, all Circular Polarizing filters rotate.

Q: 2. Why isn't it available in 46mm filter size? That's the size most of my Micro Four Thirds lenses are.

A: Charles... this filter is available, but B&H does not list it on their website as it is considered Special Order . Please call B&H directly and tell them you would like to request they special order item # 46WPOL from Tiffen. I currently show a few of these in stock and they can be dropped shipped directly from Tiffen to you when ordered through B&H.

Q: 3. Different Hoya Circular Polarizer Filters (NXT, HD2, etc) have different filter factors. Is the polarizing effect independent of that factor? Or to state it a different way, does the filter have two effects - polarizing & neutral density? So would a CP filter with a lower (smaller) filter factor be just as effective at the polarizing effect as one with a larger (bigger) filter factor?

A: That is actually a great question. My main experience is with B&W HTC polarizers and the Hoya HD3's. The Hoya HD3 has become my favorite polarizer because it is so bright and easy to use. I'm not sure if the degree of polarization is the same because of the extra brightness, but it works SO well that it does not seem to matter if there is a small loss in any way. Also, the HD3 goes very nicely from warm to cool as you rotate it which is very useful. When I go back to my B&W polarizer it works well only on bright days when there is a lot of light - so to put it bluntly, the HD3 will spoil you in every way and is worth the money.

Q: 4. How thick is the frame?

A: The HD3 Cir/Pol filter is 5mm thick.

Q: 5. Is this a rotating filter for different darkness or is it just a straight one color?

A: A polarizing filter helps eliminate reflections, from shiny surfaces such as water, glass, etc. One can control unwanted reflections by rotating the filter to minimize or even eliminate reflections. This filter has no effect on colors.

Q: 6. will this compatible with nikon d3200 18-55mm lens?

A: You will want the 52mm size for the Nikon 18-55mm lens.

Q: 7. Can I use it with the DJI osmo mobile 6?

A: The Tiffen 58mm MagSafe Filter Mount with Circular Polarizer Filter for iPhone 14/15 Pro, B&H # TISP5814PRSU, could potentially get in the way of the smartphone clamp on the DJI Osmo Mobile 6. It will also add extra weight, which could cause issues with stabilization if it exceeds the load that the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 supports. It is not be something we can recommend as it would require some testing.

Q: 8. By the picture of this filter shown here it looks thicker than, for example, a Sony 72mm filter. Is it? I am concerned about vignetting when shooting wide angle. Is it considered a THIN filter? Why is it called a MOOSE? Hopefully because it is not big and Moosie!!

A: This is NOT a thin filter, by any means. It will cause vignetting an wide angle lenses. It is named after Moose Peterson, a long time Nikon user and pro photographer.

Q: 9. Are the rings brass or aluminum? Are there front threads?

A: The rings are aluminum. Brass rings have a tendency to transfer any impact shock directly to the lens, while aluminum rings ill absorb most of the impact.

Q: 10. With only a 1/3 stop loss in light, is this as good at polarization as other polarizing filters with much greater light loss?

A: Yes, it is. This is one of Hoya's highest quality polarizing filters.

[0.1 lb] First, I've been shooting for over 10 years, but never had the opportunity to use a matte box. So,Its brand new for me to work with filter. But I regret I didn't doit earlier !! And this filter was perfect for me to begin. Its really useful to shoot trough windows and even from the surface of any water source I've did so far. And at the same time, its a warmer, so it give a better look to my any scene !

[0.1 lb] No surprises here, polarizes the light and has a slightly warm cast. I bought the linear polarizer hoping it had a more pronounced effect than the circular polarizer but it doesn't seem to be significantly different.

[Glass] No longer do I have to use two filters to get the warming effect. I will use this is taking photos of fall leaves and some afternoon shots of flowers.

[58 mm] Excellent value in Polarizing filters. I was looking for a second filter for a new lens, but I didn't want to spend a small fortune. I found this to be a better quality filter than the Hoya I already own and spent more on!
