Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this 82mm adapter ring compatible with the Godox MF-R76 Macro Ring Flash?

A: No, this Nissin 82mm Adapter Ring is only for the Nissin MF-18 Macro Flash.

Q: 2. Can it be used as a master with Godox flash units as slaves (using an A7riv)?

A: Yes, it works as a master with Godox speedlights for sony. But optically only. It is line of site verses the radio system which is not.

Q: 3. Does this flash support high-speed sync? If not, then IT SHOULD!

A: Yes it does. You will need to set it to the HSS mode or turn on the HSS in camera

Q: 4. How does this unit attach to a macro lens. Other companies with similar product spring load onto a retaining ring. Is this the same with this product?

A: To attach the Nissin MF18 Macro Flash for Nikon to a lens, you attach an appropriately sized adapter ring to the front thread of the lens, and attach the flash head to the adapter. There are then four mounting tabs on the inside of the flash head that you need to press down into the grooves of the adapter ring.

Q: 5. Is the outside of this ring flat?

A: Yes.

Q: 6. Is this compatible with the Nikon D850?

A: The Nissin MF18 Macro Ring Flash for Nikon is fully compatible with the Nikon D850 DSLR Camera.

Q: 7. What is the outside diameter of this ring? I am wondering if it can be used with the Yongnuo YN-24 macro flash?

A: Although the manufacturer does not list a diameter of this ring, it is only compatible with the Nissin MF18 Macro Flash.

Q: 8. Is this compatible with Sony A7iii?

A: Yes, but ast it is dedicated to the Canon system, it can only be used in the manual mode on a Sony system via the center contact pin on the hotshoe.

Q: 9. This uses strobe flash TUBES not LEDS correct? The leds are modeling only correct? How many feet is 16 meters, I'm an American.

A: The Nissin MF18 Macro Flash uses the LED lights just for the modeling light. There are flash tubes in the ring for the actual exposure. 16 meters is about 52.5 feet.

Q: 10. Will this work with the Yongnuo 14EX II Macro flash?

A: No; the Nissin MF18 Macro Ring Flash is only compatible for use with the Nissin MF18 Macro Ring Flash. It is not compatible for use with the Yongnuo YN-24EX TTL Macro Flash for Canon Cameras. Yongnuo does not have a 62mm adapter ring designed for use with their YN-24EX Macro Flash. As such, I would recommend to purchase the Sensei PRO 62-67mm Aluminum Step-Up Ring, B&H # SESURPA6267, and use the above step-up ring with the 67mm adapter ring included with the YN-24EX Macro Flash. This setup would allow you to use the macro flash with lenses that have a 62mm front filter thread.

[0.095 lb] The controls on the falsh are easy to understand and use right out of the box. Works great with 430EX as slave with Canon 100M 2.8L. It is bulky but as a special use flash, you would expect that.

[49mm] I am an amateur who dabbles in event, street, and sports photography. I wanted to move into portraiture because I get a lot of requests this time of year to take (free) prom pictures of the debs in the 'hood. I needed a softer light and could only afford one purchase. The results with this unit, even combined with simple ambient light were just what I wanted and, frankly, startingly good. It was plug-and-play and continues to work without issue. It does require that red-eye (and pet-eye) be removed in post, but that is very simple. I now think that I am a better photographer than I really am, but at 67, I'm okay with that.

[49mm] I bought this to replace an older cheap ring light that just stopped working. It is quality built, and I love the iTTL for my Nikon. The last one did not have iTTL and I had to use it on manual mode. The refresh time is fast, the adapter rings work for all of my lenses. Overall very satisfied with this unit for both Macro and fashion photography.

[49mm] First of all, I purchased this ring flash to be used on a nikon 200mm F/4 macro lens. I always wanted this lens and finally decided to add this lens to my nikon family of glass. Now I have a new photographic assignment, that well require a ring light because I well be photographing artificial iris patients. As soon as I received the ring flash it went right on the 200mm without any problem using the 58mm adaptor ring (included) with the nice case that holds all of the adaptor rings as well as the command and flash unit. Simple to use and understand, and perfect exposures with a very small learning curve. I well be using this flash for all kinds of macro opportunity to use it both inside the studio, and outside as weather permits.

[49mm] I have only had this ring flash for three weeks and I have fallen in love with it. I purchased it specifically to illuminate my water drop/splash photography. Contrary to many reviews indicating the lack of power, this flash has plenty of punch to light up my work at f/11, giving me ample depth of field. I am using the ring flash as a single light using the left and right tubes set a 1/1024 power resulting in a 1/30,000sec flash duration, plenty to freeze the splash action. Se attached image. I recommend this unit for serious professional Macro work.

[0.095 lb] I fell in love with this macro flash at my first use of it. The menu system is so intuitive and easy to make adjustments with. The flash exposes well, particularly with my Nikon D850. It works reasonably well with my Nikon Z 7 that had exposure problems with the little Nissin i400. The adjustments to change the power levels of the two tubes is quick and easy. It seems robust and I (hopefully) expect it to last well with use.
I use the MF18 with a Tamron 90mm VR macro lens and a Sigma 150mm OS/HSM macro lens - both work successfully with it.
