Tiffen 77mm Warm Polarizer Filter

The Tiffen 77mm Warm Polarizer Filtercan be applied to create a warm cast over an entire image while helping to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.
The warming effect of this filter can be obtained under daylight when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected. This filter's overall coloration reflects a mired shift value of +45.
A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain an additional quarter wave plane. The addition of a quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, in-camera auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.
This filter is recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus, is non-coated, and has approximately 40% average light transmission. It is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring that can be rotated in order to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light
Can add a warm cast over an entire image when used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors
Polarizing effect is strongest when used at a 90° angle from the sun
Recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus
Non-coated
Approximately 40% average light transmission
3x filter factor reduces exposure by 1.6 stops
Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity
Made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch
Aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight
Filter ring can be rotated to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect
77mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters
Plastic filter case for storage and transport
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Does this come with the same case / cover system that the McKinnon Variable ND filter comes with?
A: It does not. The PM Variable ND Signature II comes with its round unique protector (hard cover + rubberized cover), and the Quartzline CPL comes with a square hard case with magnetic closure.
Q: 2. will this compatible with nikon d3200 18-55mm lens?
A: You will want the 52mm size for the Nikon 18-55mm lens.
Q: 3. How many stops of light does this filter induce? And are the elements made from glass or resin?
A: I am sorry the element looks like glass but does not say glass on any literature on the plastic container. Also did not test for stop reduction.I purchased the filter for our trip to Yellowstone last June and provided some nice photo's of the springs and Geyser's. Not good for sun sets.
Q: 4. Does this filter have any coating for protection?
A: The Moose Warm Circular Polarizer is not coated.
Q: 5. To be honest I have not researched lens composition. I read about this filter in a magazine many years ago and now have one for every lens. Does it make a difference? I have always assumed the lens was glass. As to light loss, I agree with another response and have never faced major light loss. If used in daylight it has never altered stops. Further, I would agree that light loss would be almost nothing to maybe 1 to 1.5 stops although the latter seems rather extreme. Not sure what you are looking for to render a decision, but I would never be without this lens, especially in the fall and doing landscapes/mountains.
A: I am 73 years old, have had one since they first came out. Now I have four.C.B.
Q: 6. how do I remove it? I thought I screwed it on, but now I cant remove it by unscrewing!
A: It sounds like you may have screwed it in too tightly and the outer ring is probably spinning when you try to unscrew it. Please remember that it will be righty tighty lefty loosey. Try using something like a rubber band to grip the inner ring on the lens side and gently but firmly twist it in a counter clockwise direction as you are facing the filter on the lens.
Q: 7. Why isn't it available in 46mm filter size? That's the size most of my Micro Four Thirds lenses are.
A: Charles... this filter is available, but B&H does not list it on their website as it is considered Special Order . Please call B&H directly and tell them you would like to request they special order item # 46WPOL from Tiffen. I currently show a few of these in stock and they can be dropped shipped directly from Tiffen to you when ordered through B&H.
Q: 8. Is this a thin mount - wondering if I'll have an issue on my Canon 24-70 if it is too thick?
A: No, this is not a thin filter. You will experience vignetting on ultra-wide lenses, but a 24mm lens is not considered ultra-wide.
Q: 9. Does this filter rotate to adjust the polarizing effect?
A: Yes it does rotate to adjust the polarizing effect.
Q: 10. Is this filter likely to cause vignetting if used on a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 lens?
A: Between 10 to approximately 17 to 18mm, you will experience vignetting.
