Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Why this lens is not compatible with FF lens? 200, 300, and 560 are fully compatible with FF base on tests and those lenses were made base on FF film lenses

A: B&H information is incorrect. It has been confirmed directly with Pentax and indirectly with practical usage by many users that this lens is in fact entirely compatible with a FF sensor.

Q: 2. Does this item come with tripod mounting bracket?

A: Yes, a tripod mounting ring is included with this lens.

Q: 3. Is the tripod collar removable?

A: The tripod collar on the Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR is removable.

Q: 4. does this work with the pentax 645d?

A: No. This lens is designed to cover the APS-C image format, so larger formats such as full-frame or 645 will be vignetted.

Q: 5. Are there any scratches on the front or rear glass elements?

A: The Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR is a brand-new lens with a 1-year warranty--it's in perfect condition with no scratches anywhere.

Q: 6. Does this come with a case?

A: It comes with a soft case

Q: 7. Does it accurately autofocus throughout the expected range?

A: Yes Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR can autofocus well as close as 4.59 feet to infinity.

Q: 8. I have a Pentax P3 (still shoot film) Does this lens focus manually?

A: Yes it allows manual focus. But there is no aperture ring and the aperture control is only compatible with newer cameras. Exposure control with this lens may be impossible with a Pentax P3.

Q: 9. Is this lens compatible with K-5 IIs body with firmware version 1.07?

A: Yes, it is.

Q: 10. If I mount this lens on a APC-S camera it will be 450mm?

A: The crop factor of a Pentax with APS-C sensor is 1.5. The image of a 300mm lens on this sensor is equivalent to a 450mm lens image on a full-frame sensor. Please note that this Pentax 300mm DA lens is designed for APS-C sensor. If used on a full-frame sensor Pentax camera, the periphery of the image (i.e. outside of the cropped area) may be degraded and not as sharp.

The LensCoat was as expected, easy to put on and has a very good feel. Because of the expense of the Nikon AF-S 300 f/4E, I felt it was worth protecting from scratches so this is the first LensCoat that I have purchased. Living in NE, the insulation makes it much more comfortable to use in the cold and I love the feel of the lens in my hand. Because Ishootmostly at high shutter speeds, I don't use the VR often but can tell it would be difficult to switch back and forth with the plastic cover. Regardless, I wouldn't cut this out because it does add some water protection around the switch and it is easy enough to lift the neoprene to make the change. It works for me and I would highly recommend this cover.

I have been a pro shooter for almost 40 years, and am a lifelong Pentaxian. I have owned many Pentax lenses, and recently upgraded my old "Green Star" 300 f/4 to this lens. It is simply stunning, and one of the sharpest lenses I have ever shot with. Nearly flawless.

Using with K 3 for wildlife shots, mostly backyard birds. Good reach and sharp pictures handheld.

I had this lens for 9 years now and it never ceases to amaze me. It was excellent on APS sensors, it's just as good on full frame. The AF is reasonably fast and precise and it never needed adjustments on any of my bodies. It is light enough to hand held and with stabilization it can go as low 1/60 sec and produce sharp images. I may complain perhaps about the hood, that wears up quickly against the metal threads, and over the years I dropped it too often and and had to replace it twice. The combo with the DA 1.4X TC is just as good as the lens alone in terms of sharpness and AF (for APS bodies), too bad Pentax is not releasing a TC update for full frame. I would buy this lens again.

Sharp, quiet, heavy but can be hand held, great color, and pairs well with Pentax 1.4 teleconverter. I'm 74 and have only taken hand held photos thus far, and it works great!

The copy of the SMCP-DA 300mm f/4 I received is an excellent
lens.  Quick focus, and image quality is superb.  Although accurately described by B&H, the lens is physically larger and heavier than I expected.  Not a problem, it is easy to carry and use hand-held.  Currently it is mounted on a K3 Mark 3, a combo which is my wildlife setup. Could not be more pleased.

Quite pleased with this lens. Haven't had too much of a chance to use it yet but quick tests have been nice

I have been using LensCoat covers on my lenses for a few years now and have not looked back. Lenses are expensive, and this helps provide protection for my investment. The camo pattern also helps a lot around wildlife.

Friends wonder why my images are so clean and crisp, and I tell them
I am using the DA* 300mm F4 prime from Pentax.

It's quiet focus will not disturb your subjects, and although it is a tad slow because of older tech the focusing on my KP body is amazing.

This is my 2nd one as the fist fell off a truck and was irreparably damaged. But it proved itself in the past, and the new one is just as sharp.

I bought this as an experiment to see if 'camo' covers actually improve wildlife photo opportunities. I have seen many photographers with them, so I am trying it. an added bonus is the bump protection of the neoprene. The install was very easy and straight forward. The fit was spot on for a Nikon lens.
