Professional musicians, recording artists, and sound designers in search of a highly portable music making device will be thrilled with the teenage engineering OP-1 Field, the latest flagship instrument that builds upon the success of the original OP-1 with over 100 enhancements, refinements, and upgrades. The aluminum body has been lowered around the keyboard and feels thinner, lighter, and more precise. There's also a 2.4 GHz antenna system that's been fitted inside, and the rear panel now has a plastic cover with two soft Velcro rings for fastening to covers and other accessories.

The OP-1 Field is now stereo throughout its entire signal chain and includes Bluetooth MIDI, USB-C, and an updated speaker system with a passive driver for detailed, fat, and loud sound. The battery has been expanded to 24-hours of continuous use, while the system engine offers multiple tapes and recording formats including Studio 4-Track, Vintage 4-Track, Porta, and Disc Mini. You'll love the new reverb effect and the Dimension synth engine. A flush, all-glass, high-resolution display is easier to read with all new graphics. The unit can also broadcast over FM for even more flexibility.

Operation

With the vocoder active, press mic to select the input source. this is the input for the voice, the modulator, and you can use any input source, such as the built-in microphone, a headset or even the radio or usb. after you've selected your input source, speak and play notes on the musical keyboard. you should now hear your OP–1 field burst into beautiful singing.

In the OP–1 field vocoder, the audio input (the modulator/your voice) is passed through a bank of 20 filters with controllable bandwidth and formant shift. The carrier signal is built-in: a custom 7-oscillator polyphonic synth that goes from a single sawtooth to pure white noise. Everything is fully real-time and modulate-able. Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the 32 bit be edited properly using adobe premiere?

A: Yes. Adobe offers 32 Bit Floating Point Audio.

Q: 2. re: 32bit. The input mic says 105db. If you get a different mic capable of higher db, will the input still be distortion free? say, if you are recording something at 140 db, like a loud concert, or a jet show, w/ a low flyby. Just because the recorder is capable of capturing at that bit rate & resolution, many x's the pre-amps are not capable of utilizing the spec's/dynamics, sometimes related to s/n ratio & it's rated max db level.

A: Since this is a new product that is not out yet these specs have not been tested in the real world yet. I can not guarentee an answer at this time.

Q: 3. Where this laptop is manufactured?

A: It is manufactured in China.

Q: 4. Does this Laptop has an international warranty ?

A: Limited 1-Year Warranty in the USA. We offer an optional warranty, Square Trade, which is world-wide coverage.

Q: 5. Can I plug this into an Amp or the line out of a speaker? Would that be too much voltage?

A: You can send the output from the F2 to the line input of an amp or powered speaker. The input on the F2 is intended for use with a microphone and not a line level signal from an amplifier or speaker. In order to connect a line level signal to the mic input on the F2, you would need to use a line-to-mic level attenuator and possibly other adapters to provide compatibility.

Q: 6. Does the OP-1 Field fit in this case with the Decksaver on it?

A: No. The teenage engineering Large Bag is designed to hold the OP-1 Field Portable Synthesizer Workstation by itself, without the Decksaver cover. When the Decksaver cover is attached to the OP-1, it is too thick to fit inside the case.

Q: 7. Does this laptop have an IR camera for Windows Hello Login?

A: The laptop comes with a HD camera.

Q: 8. Could you put this recorder and mic on a table and record an interview or group conversation with a single mic and device?

A: Yes, but you will need to use a different microphone. The Olympus ME-33 Boundary Microphone (B&H #OLME33) is a boundary microphone that is designed to pickup conversation from a group of people. It operates using plug-in power and has a 3.5mm connector on the attached cable. Since the F2 has a locking 3.5mm input, you will need to use an adapter that has the same type of connector such as the Sennheiser CL1 3.5mm to 3.5mm Output Cable (B&H #SECL1). You can join the CL1 with the mic's cable using a Hosa Technology GMM303 3.5mm Female Stereo Mini to 3.5mm Female Stereo Mini Adapter (B&H #HOASMFSMF).

Q: 9. How many external displays can this support?

A: This item can accommodate 2 additional monitors. One via USB-C, and the other using HDMI.

Q: 10. Is this a touch screen? Does the screen detach to be used as a tablet?

A: The laptop doesn't have a touchscreen features and the screen is not detachable.

[14 x 4.9 x 1.5"] Preface this: I'm an OP-1 nut. I love it. I use it. I can't get enough of it. This OP-1 Field edition is everything it says it is and more. An insane upgrade. Imagine not upgrading your iphone for 10 years and then BAM Apple drops the ultimate device. This is that device. The ultimate for what it is. And iykyk when it comes to Teenage Engineering stuff. Love it or leave it.

[14 x 4.9 x 1.5"] The Op-1 has managed to recreate a process that is immediately familiar to veteran musicians; the multitrack tape recorder. Lots of small, digital stand-alone multitrack recorders exist but, although the knobs and transport buttons remain in the traditional configuration, these devices could not seem to harness the same tactile and aesthetic feel of the real thing. The OP-1 has achieved this. The elegance of the design, both in the tactile elements AND the OLED readout have yanked the analog tradition from the jaws of the digital world. Once you learn the interface, you'll be aching to get a few minutes with the device, even if you don't have something in mind, musically. You'll just want to use it. Can't say that for most software-based recording solutions. Anyway, it's built like a tank, and has everything you need to create music, right on board; multiple synth engines, drum machines, a robust sample engine (allowing external audio, on-board mic, on-board FM radio and re-sampling), 4-track recorder, 2 mix down platters, FX and LFO, and multiple sequencers. But the simple fact is, you'll WANT to use it. This is the greatest endorsement I can think of. Well worth the price point.

[0 to 31 dB] I cant say enough how enjoyable it is to be able to bring this anywhere while being able to get ideas out in such and interesting way!

[13 Kilohms] Very happy with this new version of the OP-1 Field. There are so many improvements compared with the OG but here are my favorite features.

Sound Quality

- The OG sounded very digital/lo-fi. The Field sounds hi-fi and so much better; even all the older instruments sound great.

New Synth and Effect

- Dimension synth (traditional subtractive synth engine) was something that was missing from the OG and is a very welcome and useful addition
- Mother reverb sounds lush and phenomenal
- The old spring reverb also now sounds amazing in 32bit audio.

Connectivity

Connectivity has been significantly improved. Make all kinds of connections with other gear with the Field. Very liberating.
Here are some I have tried:

- Midi over Bluetooth both ways
- Connect Midi hardware via USB and the Field acts as a midi host; I connected my LaunchPad Pro mk3 to play Field patches with velocity sensitivity and sequence drums
- Connect an iPad over USB-C and send audio from the iPad to the OP-1sampler

- Connect a high quality USB microphone to the OP-1 and record my guitar to the tape tracks
- It really feels like a portable DAW or studio now

Build Quality
The OG was already one of the most premium and beautiful instruments I have owned but everything on the Field feels even better.
- Screen looks amazing
- Feels very solid and well put together; knobs feel good, keys are all even
- USB C port

Much of the discussion has been about the price of the Field. I agree it is very expensive. Having it in my hands and using it, it feels like a premium high-quality product. It sounds amazing and can do so much. Here is another way of thinking about it; the OP-1 Field is Teenage Engineering's flagship workstation, it just happens to be very small but very powerful.

[1.79 lb] Wanted an OP-1 for many years. Purchased an original a few years ago just months of the surprise release of the Field. Finally upgraded to the OP-1 field and absolutely love it. The construction is phenomenal, with a very solid feel while staying familiar to the original design. The sound is great, especially the upgraded stereo signal path throughout.
I don't love the velcro circles that come pre-adhered to the bottom of the unit (in fact I immediately removed them from mine). That said it's not a deal breaker as they come off cleanly, albeit with a bit of work.
I recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade from an original OP-1, or who is considering buying one for the first time. It is a very unique machine which inspires a lot of creativity and joy.

[1.79 lb] I took a credit card hit. Couldn't afford it but I am simply dazzled by it's sound. A true gem to behold and work with. It's a great upgrade to my coffee table ipad and usb c connected op1 field. The effects alone are worth it for me. The rest are all bonuses.

[1.79 lb] Teenage Engineering is at the cutting edge of synth engineering - the kinds of sounds you get pre-loaded are amazing. But what really sets this instrument apart is that it's just FUN. It's playful and really draws you in - even if you're not a musician. You'll become one! Dive in.

[13 Kilohms] The OP-1 is a legend, and it does not disappoint. I am not a musician and have little experience with music making and recording. Nevertheless, the OP-1 is immediately intelligible, and it's quick to start making great sounds. It's hugely fun. Of course, I'm sure it's an excellent professional-grade instrument, but for my uses - as someone learning something new for the pure enjoyment of it - this is a brilliant device.

Also, B&H has wonderful customer service (they sorted out a problem quickly and clearly) so I recommend buying from here.

[0 to 31 dB] It's price premium, but it's premium. The battery lasts forever allowing you to really take it and not worry about it. Plus it has so much utility it can do almost anything.

[13 Kilohms] I really like this little thing. I never had the original OP-1, so this was completely new to me. It's still taking me some time to get used to it, but there's some great tutorial videos on youtube. The sound on it is great. Really cool and unique effects. Lot's of good presets and it's easy enough to customize and save my own.

Some of the limitations, like no undo, actually make me step out of my comfort zone and work harder or come up new ways of doing things that I may not have even tried otherwise. Still, it is a little scary to record live over existing audio sometimes.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the purchase. I really like the MIDI over bluetooth that lets me use it as a wireless midi keyboard and control for FL Studio on my Mac. One of the biggest things I wish was that they had more, and deeper, documentation. It only comes with a tiny little book that covers the basics of everything the synth can do (tons of typos).
