$597.00 $734.31

The Godox VDS-M3 Rechargeable Shotgun Microphoneis a shotgun microphone for video, film, interview, and documentary work. The mic provides a smart feature set that allows you to tailor the sound to your needs, offers an XLR output, and includes a built-in rechargeable battery, which can power the mic for up to 220 hours when a 48V phantom-power source is unavailable.

The mic features a supercardioid pickup pattern that focuses audio capture on the subject and reduces unwanted background sound, while engaging the -10 dB pad allows the mic to handle louder sources. Unwanted low-end rumbles can be reduced via the high-pass filter with settings at 75 Hz, while the high-frequency boost switch can be engaged to add presence for more intelligible dialog. The VDS-M3 mounts to a boompole or stand via the included adjustable bracket, which can pivot 270° for optimal positioning. An included foam windscreen helps further reduce noise, and a USB charging cable is also supplied.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the part number of a deadcat I can purchase for use with the Zoom M3?

A: Zoom has confirmed that the Zoom HWS-6 Hairy Windscreen (BH #ZOHWS6) will fit the Zoom M3 MicTrak Stereo Shotgun Microphone and Recorder.

Q: 2. Would this work well for interviews on a boom? As well as off camera audio for YouTube videos? Thanks

A: It probably wouldn't work very well. It's not a shotgun it's just a condenser mic. It will not have the distance that a shotgun would. Nor will the polar pattern be the same.

Q: 3. Is this mic compatible with DSLR cameras? I have a Canon 5D mark III and am looking for on on-camera shotgun mic.

A: The NTG1 requires power in order to operate that is supplied by the device the mic is connected to. unfortunately this is not able to be supplied by the cameras mini jack output. For the 5D mkIII and similar cameras you will need an additional adapter that is able to provide the power to the mic such as a Beachtek DXA-SLR ULTRA, which will allow the connection of 2 mics, level control, metering and limiters to protect from overload. Alternatively a battery powered mic will also work directly connected. The NTG-2 would be an example.

Q: 4. How can this microphone claim so much greater directionality (down 14 dB at 60 degrees off-axis) than other shotgun microphones of similar physical length. Is it a typo?

A: The physical length alone does not determine directinality. It is the overal design and engineering that achieves this specification. Q: 5. What is a suggestion for a case?

A: You can use the Auray WMC-500 Wide-Mouth EVA Case (B&H # AUWMC500) to store and protect the Zoom M3 MicTrak Stereo Shotgun Microphone and Recorder.

Q: 6. I have a Rode Videopro shotgun mic. Besides the XLR inputs, How does this compare to that microphone?

A: The reach and rejection of the NTG 4+, along with a richer, fuller audio reproduction are just a few advantages. The NTG4+is also mor robustly built and includes an Internal Rechargeable Lithium Battery.

Q: 7. Is this compatible with Nikon Z6 ?

A: Yes, fully compatible.

Q: 8. Noise floor vs smic 2?

A: Unfortunately, Zoom has not disclosed the exact noise floor for the M3 MicTrak Stereo Shotgun Microphone and Recorder.

Q: 9. Through the 1/8th inch does it auto level to avoid clipping? does the stereo width utilize the 1/8th inch left right into cam

A: The Zoom M3 MicTrak Stereo Shotgun is a 32-Bit recorder and has no included limiter due to the extra large dynamic range.

Q: 10. How far from the subject this mic can record with quality? Is it good for advertising production?

A: Lots of variables here, but generally you should be within a couple of feet of the sound source - less if it is a noisy environment. This is more an aspect of proper location sound technique in general, rather than the quality of this particular mic. This mic is capable of very good quality sound, but even the most expensive mic will sound terrible if it is 10 ft from the subject.

[Supercardioid] Great mic, sounds awesome. Excellent for dialogue, using it now on a short film.

[Supercardioid] Great mic for interviews on the field and for picking some ambient sound (eg. street events, concerts, etc).

[75 Hz ] Just turn this thing on and go...don't worry about levels. 32bit float is making one-person operations much more reliable without the need to monitor audio record levels. If you don't know what 32bit float means, look it up. This microphone is amazing and just works.

[Supercardioid] This mic has been super helpful during events, even when it's noisy. If I need to get in close to a band where I know the audio will clip, I no longer have to worry about it. The audio quality of this mic went above my expectations.

[1.375 lb] Being able to turn on the mic, record, and not worry about volume levels is definitely worth the price.

[Solid-State] I previously bought and returned the first generation of this product. I guess in the attempt to make it affordable, Zoom neglected to shield the mic from interference and it picked up the local radio.

However, that issue has been fixed. I have the fixed version now and... I don't want to sound hyperbolic, but this is the best piece of audio gear I've ever used.

For on-board audio there is literally nothing better. The auto-mix doesn't sound like an auto mix.

Two examples:

I shot a trumpeter at a horse race, who began talking to the people in the crowd after he played. You could hear every word. So that's perfect sounding trumpet, followed by perfect sounding dialogue, at a 15 ft distance.

Second, I shot my 2 year old daughter's birthday. We have perfect audio of everyone singing happy birthday, and then a perfect audible pffff as she blows out the candles.

And this is the audio it outputs to the camera, not even the 32 bit float it records internally.

If you are documenting life as it is happening, this is the single best piece of gear you could get.

[-10 dB] After Zoom issued a recall for the M2, M3 and M4 saying they identified the RF issue, I was confident in trying out the M3, and I'm glad I did! No RF issues for me yet. For my purposes, this mic is more valuable as a standalone mic than an on-camera mic. I can put it on a small desktop stand or on a boom and it essentially replaces having to run a shotgun, wire and separate recorder (F6 or F3) which saves so much time in setting up.

I recently used it for a small shoot where I placed the M3 on a small desktop tripod on a podium to record some folks speaking at an event. There were too many speakers to try to mic up individually and the PA system wasn't adequate to record from, so this was a great alternative/backup to attempting to record everyone. The problem was that one of the speakers walked off to the side, however because of the M3 Edit & Play software, I could change the directivity of the recording after the fact and it worked great!

This feature plus internal 32bit recording makes the M3 an awesome tool to add to your audio recording tool kit.

[-10 dB] I use it for outdoor sound recordings and find it to be truly awesome, reasonably priced for such amazing technology.
PS: I am a seasoned engineer and don't go easily gaga for technological devices.
