Q: 1. Could you theoretically attach treads and a Tilta Nucleus-M to this to manually control zoom and focus for video?

A: Yes, this is possible. Gearing can be attached to the Zoom and Focus Rings to enable control via a Follow Focus system.

Q: 2. why is this lens so expensive?

A: If you remember the Azanuma zooms of the 70's, this is way betterbut so was everything else& just rent it first if you are not sure so that you don't end up complaining and explaining that you purchased it and then got charged a restocking fee when you returned it in some insipid equipment review. At the end of the day people are gonna end up with what they can afford, like, and can actually live withirrespective of any reviews.

Q: 3. Can you tell me what the purpose of the door/window opening on the bottom of lens hood is? I am perplexed as are some of my more experienced friends.

A: I think so you can turn a filter without removing the hood.

Q: 4. Just got it today. Is it normal that the lens twisting just a tiny little once locked on mount. It seems to be a little loose , I guess that is what I meant to say.

A: My FE 2.8 70-200 GM OSS will wiggle back and forth very slightly when mounted on my a7RII.

Q: 5. Its this lenses made in Japan

A: It is not manufactured in Japan.

Q: 6. If I used a 2x teleconverter with this how much light do I loose? I am using A6500

A: Hi Ariel, with a 2x teleconverter you will lose two stops.

Q: 7. Zoom ring looser as it gets closer to 200mm ??

A: I have both the Canon and Sony 70-200 mm and they are about the same.It seems right to me.

Q: 8. Add a teleconverter

A: By all means, yes.

Q: 9. How durable is this lense in weather like rain or dust?

A: I've had it out for Friday Night Lights through many light mist to pouring rain circumstances. I do use a Rain Sleeve & I've not had a problem. When It's been a great lens that pairs wonderfully with my Sony a9. When I get home, I do undo everything & let everything dry overnight. I do not keep it in my bag. When you're investing that much money, I tend to do a bit more to ensure it's worth

Q: 10. Does this lens focus by wire? Or is it a mechanical focus? How is the focusing when you manually focus? (For video -rack focus, tracking, tactile feel)

A: It is focus by wire.

[0.16 lb] I LOVE this lens. I have owned both the EF70-200mm f/2.8L II as well as the VR2 version of the 70-200mm f/2.8 in Nikon. The new GMaster has raised the bar as far as I'm concerned, especially when shooting portraits with the EYE AF mode. It's difficult to get an eye out of focus even wide open and working in close to my subjects. The integral tripod foot is similar to Nikon's and is a superior to the Canon in removal with it's quick release. The lens is SHARP! Tons of contrast and really nice neutral color rendition will allow me to use this for both stills as well as video projects. Sony knocked this one out of the park...

[0.16 lb] After experiencing how well LensCoat lens covers work for my 200-600mm, I picked one up for this lens. The fit incredibly well and provide that extra-level of protection, while also making you look important when not in the field! Highly recommend these covers

[0.16 lb] I got this one because I bought the same for the 200-600mm lens. Why I used to hunt and go berserk over camo for certain seasons, now I shoot with the camera. I like the real tree system for both lenses. The switches and buttons are still accessible, but not in the cold when you're wearing thin gloves...you need your fingertip to activate switches through the plastic window. Rings still turn great...just adjust the neoprene to ensure no drag against the neighboring pieces.

My only issue (which is trivial) is the small arc cutout for the white locator pin used to attach the lens to the body is not large enough to see the pin; however, you know where it is based on the small arc itself. Or, get out your scissors and cut a bigger arc!

[0.16 lb] It actually took month and a day, from my pre-order with B&H to receiving the lens. With the few dollars I had left, I set up a little informal lens test, (taped dollar bills and stamps on a card) to see just how the lens would perform it terms of sharpness, color, bokeh. And when panning on and off the card, how fast could the lens refocus back to the card? (fast enough for me.) Used different f stops and distances during the test,- camera set to aperture priority. In every case I am delighted to report the lens performed stunningly. Have also hiked around the woods grabbing shots, and again I am very pleased with the results. I know its not inexpensive lens but I am not regretting this purchase.

[0.16 lb] I have been slowly switching over from Canon to Sony for 4 years and now I am completely Sony. The A9 was the final piece to replace my 1Dx. Once I had access to a full frame mirrorless that will give me the frame rate necessary for Wildlife and Sports, I could also move on to native lenses for the Sony FE system. My Sony FE 70-200 focuses faster than any lens I have owned, it's tack sharp and feels really good to use. I am holding on to my Canon 600mm F4 II and using it with the metabones adapter until Sony offers their own super long glass.

[0.16 lb] Breathtaking. I have only my own copy but it is breathtaking. Not as heavy as I expected. Feels great with or without the battery grip on the full-frame mirrorless body. Very pleased with the multiple focus holds. Using an a7rii, results suggest the effort of wielding multiple bodies and/or repeated sensor-soiling lens changes with a bag full of primes: 70/90/105/135/180/200 -- at least six 2.8 primes in one lens with superb buttery bokeh throughout. Surely some will find something to quibble about -- no one thing can ever please everyone at any price -- but so far I have found nothing. I waited three months for my copy. Now I understand why. Zero regrets at this point. No it is not overpriced. Get one, take your shots and discover this gem for yourself. More reading about this lens cannot truly convey what it may or may not be able to do for your photography. Most of the highly technical overlong web-sourced product reviews can be pompous fifth-grade science projects at best, some more so than others. It seems like just yesterday that everyone was endlessly fretting about the availability of lenses for the Sony mirrorless ILCs. That's really is ancient history now. My Sony family: 35/1.4, 85/1.4, 24-70/2.8, and this one -- the one that pushed me all the way to actually writing something. I'm sure it will also be amazing on the quick crop-sensor bodies as well looking forward to that. Images? Get this lens and make your own. Cheers :)

[0.16 lb] The hype is real - I love this lens! I prefer the manual focus to the auto as, once you get accustomed to, it is much faster. It is a bit pricey but in my opinion worth it.

[0.16 lb] Minimal use as just obtained 1 week ago. A few test images suggests to be extremely well corrected and very very sharp on my Sony A7RII. Have not used with the extender however.
