Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How can I insert VND and promist & IR, do I need another tray slot?

A: Yes, consider adding the Tilta Stackable Circle Filter Tray for Mirage Matte Box (95mm) to work with the additional Tilta Dual Circular Filter Tray for Mirage Matte Box (95mm) in the Tilta Mirage Matte Box or going for a 4 x 5.65" stackable filter holder and trays for the Promist and IR filters. Q: 2. What's the difference between the Vaxis Pure Mist and Black Mist filters please?

A: The Vaxis Pure Mist filter would diffuse light sources and create a softer image while the Vaxis Black Mist filter would diffuse light sources without creating a softer image.

Q: 3. Does this include a tray to actually place a filter inside it? Or do I have to purchase the dual filter slot with it?

A: The filter tray is sold separately. The link below is the tray you will need: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1672670-REG/tilta_mb_t16_dcf_dual_circular_filter_tray.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 4. I am hoping to use this instead of the VND filter in the Mirage. Can I put this filter in the Mirage matte box and remotely spin the pola?

A: Yes, The Mirage also accepts 95mm filters from Vaxis. You would be able to have the VND and additional 95mm filters installed on the Mirage Matte Box.

Q: 5. What would be a good protective filter pouch to house 3-4 filter trays with filters?

A: Consider the NiSi Caddy for S5 Filter Holder and Seven 150 x 150mm or 150 x 170mm Filters for the Tilta Dual Circular Filter Tray for Mirage Matte Box (95mm). See the link below: https://bhpho.to/2Svo68V

Q: 6. what's the difference between the Vaxis Pure Mist and Black Mist filters?

A: Both filters decrease contrast and diffuse light, but the Black Mist is more subtle, lowering highlights, but not affecting the shadows as much as the Pure Mist filter.

Q: 7. Can this be used on a lens directly? Does it have threads?

A: No, the Tilta 95mm Variable ND Filter for Mirage Matte Box is designed and made for the ND for the Mirage Matte Box. Please review the item shown below: Tilta Mirage Matte Box B&H # TIMBT16 • MFR # MB-T16 https://bhpho.to/3qXhPnn

Q: 8. Does this hold two filters?

A: According to Tilta, you can mount two 95mm filers in the same tray.

Q: 9. Can just one filter fit into this?

A: Yes, It would support mounting one or two filters.

Q: 10. What is the difference between the 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 pure mist filters?

A: The highlights and contrast would be stronger on the VFX 95 Pure Mist Filters as you go from 1/2 down to 1/8.

[0.19 lb] For the price, gotta love it. Have not noticed color cast, but have not formally tested this against Schneider/Tiffen, etc.

[Glass] So far both my Vaxis IRND filters have been flawless, love the leather sleeve they come with. Just wish the darn thing things came with a tray as you need those trays. These filters are way to delicate to be swapping them during a shoot day

[Glass] Great set of filters, 1/8 Mist just takes the edge off the images and the ND's have no color cast to them that I can see. Great deal for the quality. Only negative is bring a lens cleaning cloth as they are a bit difficult to get in and out without leaving some fingerprints on them. Still, for the weight savings and results that is a minor issue.

[0.19 lb] This filter does a nice job softening the digital edges in a very subtle way (might be too subtle for some, but great for news/doc to not overdramatize the look.) Fits great with Tilta Mirage, eager to compare to Tilta's new Illusion line.

[0.19 lb] Not much to say. These NDs do the job and they do it well. Virtually 0% color cast. Just wish Tilta would and Vaxi would just price this alittle bit higher and include a tray with it. It would be awesome to not shell out $40 everytime l. Because the reality is you need a tray for every filter. These filters are way to delicate to be taking them out on a shoot day. You need to be able to quickly swap these but Tilta has a home run system. It's just not the cheapest as each filter is like $52 and then the trays are $40. I would gladly pay $70 for a filter with a tray. Come on Tilta Vaxis. MAke a bundle I can buy

[95 mm] I really like the pure mist. I have the 1/8 and it's probably the one that just lives on the mattebox. Just enough to soften the contrast and smooth the image but not enough to make a statement. When you want more of that effect step up to the 1/4. I think the 1/2 is just to strong for most use cases.

[Glass] If you have a Sony or Canon camera with internal ND's, I find this necessary. I constantly find the minimum ND on Sony's VND system too strong. I now carry ND3 for the Mirage, and also a PV size ND3.

[Glass] This is an excellent low cost ND filter with no signs of image pollution. It does the job, no complaints.

[0.19 lb] I was hesitant to invest in propriety filters for my Tilta Mirage matte box, but the low price, light weight and performance make them a good value. I just hope Vaxis continues to offer them, as filters can break or get scratched.

The 1/8 filter is very subtle, which may be exactly what you want. It blooms highlights and practical lights in the shot, but doesn't seem to do much for skin tones. I need to shoot more with this one, but I will purchase a 1/4 mist for stronger effect.

I will also invest in a set of the Vaxis IRND filters, as the Mirage's VND filter has a bit of a yellow/green cast. The cast isn't hard to dial out with a custom white balance on set or color work in post, but reviews of the IRND filters indicate they have much less cast to deal with.

The Tilta Mirage is a nice system, and unless someone else produces circular filters for it, the Vaxis filters are the only option. Thankfully, it's a good one.
