$179.97 $286.15

The Tiffen 49mm Soft/FX 4 Filter for Photographycan be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.

This filter has a grade of 4. Grades of 1/2, 1, 2, 3, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is is the mm ring size?

A: Series 9 filters do not have threads. You use them with different size retaining and stepdown rings. The filter is 82.6 mm and the adapter ring is 87.5 mm.

Q: 2. what is the filter factor for this? How much light does it reduce?

A: There is no light loss when using this filter.

Q: 3. Is this a neutral density filter that can be used with tungsten super 8 film?

A: The Tiffen 58mm Nude/FX 6 Filter is not an ND filter, but a warming filter--it adds a warm amber glow to the image. Search on B&H for "58mm ND filter" to see compatible filters.

Q: 4. What is a graduated neutral density filter?Does the filter rotate? By this I mean, can I rotate the filter to high light certain areas?

A: A graduated neutral-density filter is an optical filter that has a variable light transmission. Typically half of the filter is of neutral density which transitions, either abruptly or gradually, into the other half which is clear. It is used to bring an overly-bright part of a scene into the dynamic range of film or sensor. For example, it can be used to darken a bright sky so that both the sky and subject can be properly exposed. There are typically two types of graduated ND filters, which are hard edge and soft edge. This particular Tiffen Graduated 0.6 ND filter is a feathered graduated ND filter, which means that there is a natural-appearing taper between the density and clear areas of the filter. This filter does not rotate.

Q: 5. Will this fit the Sony GM 24-70

A: This filter will fit any lens with a 82mm filter thread. When looking at your lens on the B&H website at a href= https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1222774-REG/sony_sel2470gm_fe_24_70mm_f_2_8_gm.html target= _blank https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1222774-REG/sony_sel2470gm_fe_24_70mm_f_2_8_gm.html/a please refer to the SPECS tab, where it lists the filter thread diameter as 82mm.

Q: 6. What is the difference between the digital diffusion and a classic soft?

A: Please visit our website at a href= http://tiffen.com/diffusion/ target= _blank http://tiffen.com/diffusion//a for full product descriptions and video examples of all the diffusion filters we manufacture.

Q: 7. Do these work on a macro lens, 18-55mm? And stacked?

A: Yes. I have been using them to catalogue my stamp collection using only the 4x but also the 2x + 4x for very close wotk on the edges to capture any minute wear and tear. I have been having excellent results.

Q: 8. Does this filter have a rotating filter ring to allow more control over placement of density in the image?

A: Yes it does. Turns easily and is well constructed. Used it successfully in Hawaii taking sunsets. It has a nice soft graduation. I've had good luck with Tiffen filters. Has the quality that I desire and meets my price point. I use my 58mm filters on a Canon GX1. Hope that helps.

Q: 9. I am looking into buying this filter for shooting sunrises and sets where the mountains and forests are very shade compared to the sky. Should I go for something darker or lighter?

A: There is no definitive answer to your question based upon the information provided. Your question depends on the difference in correct exposure value between the mountains/forest and the sky. Each .3 of ND is equal to one stop of light loss. If the difference in exposure values is two stops, go with a graduated ND .6, if it is three stops then use a .9, etc. For best results, keep a few of these filters in your camera bag with varying ND densities.

Q: 10. DO these lens work on macro lens 18-55mm?

A: Yes, you can use close up lenses on an 18-55mm lens.

[0.2 lb] I often shoot women who just want that softer look and no matter how I tweak the lighting, they aren't happy. This filter is the magic weapon that works every time.

[Aluminum] This filter has a slight brown cast. I use it by first taking a custom white balance, then screwing on this filter. Looks like vintage color film. Good quality and minimal, if any, distortions from the use of this filter. There are three strengths currently available. If the effect is too strong you can use the Nude/FX 1.

[Glass] Its a great portrait filter as I use it to give a warmer feel to the overall scene, but also skin tones. The softness is not too much as the subject's eyes standout. Its a great filter to keep in your bag.

[0.2 lb] This $48 filter/lens purchased instead of Pentax's $600 portrait(50mm)lens. I thought I might give Tiffen a call when going through B&H's on line cat. I saw diffusion filters. They were several strengths as their are in the Soft Fx series. I called Tiffen direct & was advised to get a Soft FX3 when photographing older people with wrinkles. The rain finally stopped in OR. I tested the filter yesterday. I found that the longer the focal length & as expected the larger the f/stop the better. So using the filter on my 50-to-200mm lens @ almost 200mm is fantastic! On the pro's option below, I was surprised at how easy it was to still be able to focus the camera w/ filter attached. I used auto focus with no problem.

[Glass] When I used to shoot film, I used Fuji film to get better skin tones. With my digital SLR, I was never happy with the color cast(pale) of everyone's skin. This filter is perfect. It gives the skin a pleasing tint and softens facial features so I don't have to count the pores on the subject's face.

[Glass] Most of my portraits taken in the studio with my lites, often have a hot lite appearance to them. I needed something to soften them. What this filter does is not only soften the images but lends a warming tone to the skin. With two complete photo sessions completed, my customers are quite satisfied with the results as I am.
