The Tiffen 58mm Soft/FX 4 Filter for Photographycan be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.

This filter has a grade of 4. Grades of 1/2, 1, 2, 3, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. This filter reduces blemishes. i assume this would be by softening? does this mean pictures will not be sharp? like the eyes.

A: The Tiffen 58mm Nude/FX 2 filter reduces blemishes by adding warm tones to the image and blending background tonalities with the color of the filter. It will not soften your image.

Q: 2. Would this orange filter be the same as a number 85 Orange filter?

A: The Tiffen #16 Orange Filter (58mm) differs from an 85 Orange color conversion filter. The Tiffen #16 Orange Filter (58mm) is a contrast filter for B&W images. Instead, get the Tiffen 58mm 85 Color Conversion Filter, BH #TI8558.

Q: 3. What is the recommended filter factor?

A: The Tiffen 58mm 812 Warming Filter has a filter factor of 1/3 stop.

Q: 4. Does this filter have a rotating filter ring to allow more control over placement of density in the image?

A: Yes it does. Turns easily and is well constructed. Used it successfully in Hawaii taking sunsets. It has a nice soft graduation. I've had good luck with Tiffen filters. Has the quality that I desire and meets my price point. I use my 58mm filters on a Canon GX1. Hope that helps.

Q: 5. Is this a neutral density filter that can be used with tungsten super 8 film?

A: The Tiffen 58mm Nude/FX 6 Filter is not an ND filter, but a warming filter--it adds a warm amber glow to the image. Search on B&H for "58mm ND filter" to see compatible filters.

Q: 6. Looking to get a Canon 16-35, & considering this set. Interested if you get vignetting when stacking the filters 2-3 deep (would probably use w/ a CP at times) at 16mm? Anyone try this? Should I look for larger filters w/ an adapter instead?

A: I believe if you stack 3 82mm filters on 16mm on a full frame sensor, it's likely to vignette. You can consider using an over-sized CP with adapter instead. Another way is to buy an extra piece of ND filter of higher ND value. I believe less glass is best.

Q: 7. what is the filter factor for this? How much light does it reduce?

A: There is no light loss when using this filter.

Q: 8. Will the 58mm vector star effect filter by Tiffen fit on my 18-270mm Tamron lens?

A: No it will not. Tamron has had two different versions of an 18-270mm lens, and neither had this filter thread size. The current version of the lens is the PZD version which has a 62mm sized filter thread. The previous version had a 72mm sized filter thread. To confirm which size your lens requires you may simply remove the lens cap and look at the number on the underneath side. If you still need further help determining the proper size for your lens, you may email askbh@bhphoto.com and they can assist you.

Q: 9. Does anyone know if using this filter with 200T what the ASA reading should be? Thanks!

A: Warming filters only reduce the light by approximately 1/5th of a stop.

Q: 10. Is it possible to screw another filter onto the front?

A: The Tiffen 67mm Black Diffusion/FX 1/2 Filter has 67mm front filter threads, so any filter with 67mm threads can be stacked.

[3.5 x 3 x 0.5"] I loves this filter F/X 2. It gives a soft focus to my portraits without actually blurring the image. Very good for close up portraits.
