The Tiffen 52mm Soft/FX 5 Filter for Photographycan be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.

This filter has a grade of 5. Grades of 1/2, 1, 2, 3, and 4 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Any vignetting on a wide angle lens tamron 35mm 1.8 on a full frame?

A: I would eat my light meter if one filter ever vignetted on a 35mm lens mounted to a full frame camera.

Q: 2. Do these filters have screw on threads so you can stack filters?

A: Yes, the fronts of the filters are threaded at 77mm size also so you may stack them upon one another.

Q: 3. Will this ND Filter work well with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 II Lens? I am unsure if I will get the notorious X-Pattern when blocking the light at 8-Stops, because as mentioned it is a very wide lens (11-16mm). Does anyone have experience? I would buy the lens and the filter together, it seems a good bundle for land- and seascape.

A: Thin version, not for the x pattern, but because the thick version comes into view on wide angle lenses 24mm.

Q: 4. will this filter works with a sigma art 35mm lens?

A: This filter will work on any lens with a 52mm filter thread.

Q: 5. I purchased this filter a few days ago. What lens cap fits this filter?. I have been told that a 82 mm cap fits as the out flange is 82MM to avoid vignetting

A: Tiffen VND filters do not have filter threads on the front side to avoid vignetting. For this reason, standard lens caps will not fit. We recommend slip on lens caps instead, or simply remove the filter and return it to it's protective pouch.

Q: 6. What is the difference between the digital diffusion and a classic soft?

A: Please visit our website at a href= http://tiffen.com/diffusion/ target= _blank http://tiffen.com/diffusion//a for full product descriptions and video examples of all the diffusion filters we manufacture.

Q: 7. Should this filter have a physical hard stop at both ends? I have a different brand variable ND filter on my 50mm, and the adjustment ring will stop at both ends of the spectrum, where this one just keeps spinning with not stop. Is that a defect or how it's made? I find it annoying to not have the tactile 'stop', so to speak, of open or closed filter. Thanks for your help!

A: Adam,I have one and it does not have a stop, which is annoying. On the outside ring of the filter are Min - Max calibrations, which are not of much help. I just eyeball it until I have the scene, or photo exposed how I want it. This lack of a hard stop also caused me to unscrew the filter from my lens when I was just starting out with it. The last inconvenience is the lack of a lens cap to go over it which is a hassle when you are running and gunning. That said, the filter is a big help for quick lighting adjustments... once you get used to it.

Q: 8. Does this filter contaminates the bokeh balls with black spots or something else related to the diffusion filter?

A: Yes, the Tiffen Black Diffusion filter is designed with small aberrations to create a soft effect on your images and videos. However, the dots are invisible to the lens due to the proximity to your lens front element.

Q: 9. What cameras will this filter work on?

A: This filter works on film and digital cameras, and the 49mm size for this particular offering allows it to be mounted on any camera with a lens whose filter thread size is 49mm.

Q: 10. Will these filters (52 mm) fit a Nikon 5300 DSLR?

A: As long as you're using a lens that has a 52mm filter thread size, this kit will work with the Nikon 5300. I have the Nikon 18-55mm lens that I use this kit with. I also have a Nikon 55-300 lens that uses 58mm filters so I have two different sizes for my Nikon lenses I use with my 5300. Most lenses have a filter size indicator on the bottom side so you know what size to use. Look for a circle with a diagonal line through it then a number, which is the mm size of the filter threads. For instance, 52.

[0.105 lb] I loves this filter F/X 2. It gives a soft focus to my portraits without actually blurring the image. Very good for close up portraits.

[0.105 lb] Bought this for studio work with my Leica lenses, which are often too sharp for some types of portraiture--every skin pore is right there. Tried the FX 3 first, but it gives noticeable halos on specular highlights like jewelry. These are minor with the FX 1, but the desired smoothing effect of skin is still noticeable. Depending on the subject, post-processing will often still be necessary (don't expect any filter to eliminate photoshop...) but the filter helps bring the unedited image closer to target.

[0.105 lb] Recently I had to do a re-shoot for one of our biggest clients. The first go-around, our client came out looking to wrinkled and older than he should have. I purchased a Tiffen Soft/FX #1 filter and did a re-shoot. Our client came out looking a bit softer with this filter. Of course we changed the lighting some but I believe this filter made all the difference between looking good and finding another production company.

[0.105 lb] I bought this filter to use with my Sigma 105 mm macro lens for flower photography. The filter produces exactly the dreamy, ethereal look that I often aim for in my flower photography, with a beautiful soft glow when a flower is backlit. The filter is solidly built and screws onto the lens smoothly. I'm totally pleased with this product.

[0.105 lb] As standard practice in the portrait studio I like using the Soft/FX1 because it provides just enough help to take the hard edge off a portrait. Now that I have the FX2, I find it's my choice for some faces. Its effect is still fairly subtle, but can sometimes be too soft for a younger customer's portrait when it is to be used in professional publication. I can't say I notice any flare or fog effect. Technically the FX series filters aren't a translucent milky material. It would be more accurate to describe them as clear glass with hundreds or thousands of very, very small bubbles trapped inside that act as lenses.

[0.105 lb] It perfect.. gives a nice look. I think the soft/fx1 would be better (only because the highlights bloom alot with this) but this is a way to go to soften your footage/image.
