A: Firmware updates to Nikon lenses must be applied by Nikon; there is no functionality for a user to do this at home. FWIW, I have an affected lens, but don't run into the problem much, if at all. It supposedly only affects AF operation if you are focusing while zooming. I suppose that one day I will send my lens in to Nikon for the software update but for now I'm enjoying the lens too much to bother.I believe B&H has a pretty good return policy so if you use B&H and end up with an affected lens, you may be able to swap it out for a replacement. Also, the 'issue' may affect other lenses with s/n above 2008365 - mine is in the 600xxxxx range and when I check the s/n on the Nikon site I do get a message telling me that my lens is affected and that I should send my lens in.Take a look at the Nikon website - you'll have to look up the 200-500mm and go to the product forum to find the s/n check tool, at least that's what I found on the NikonUSA site.
