Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this collar be able to perfectly balance on a gimbal with a nikon d750 and an 200-500mm f5.6 when fully extended?

A: As long as you properly lock your Arca-type quick release clamp or securely screw in your quick release plate or gimbal head thread into the 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 female tripod sockets on the base of the Kirk Lens Collar for Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6 E Lens, then yes, you should be able to properly balance your lens on your gimbal tripod head.

Q: 2. Does this also fit the nikon z 180-600mm lens?

A: The Kirk Lens Collar for Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6 E Lens is not compatible with the Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens. The Kirk Lens Collar for Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens BH #KICZ1865663V • MFR #NC-180-600 is the correct lens collar. https://bit.ly/3w0bbBt

Q: 3. How do the safety stops work?

A: When used, the safety stops (also known as safety screws) prevent the foot from sliding out of the head accidentally if not correctly tightened. See gimbal heads/ball heads with safety stop grooves on their clamps, such as Wimberley, ProMediaGear, Acra-tech, Really Right Stuff, Kirk, etc.

Q: 4. Can this lens be used with an extender?

A: why would you use an extender on this already very powerfull lens. I use it with a full frame camera and with great results for over 5 miles and excellent detail. Even better than the naked eye! The qualty of an extender reduces the overall quality of the combination of the two

Q: 5. How does the manual focus ring work with this on, if it is one piece? How will it rotate?

A: The individual LensCoat pieces don't bind at the edges, so I've had no issues with using the manual focus at all. Actually the hardest thing to operate are the switches, but you have to expect that if you're going to cover and protect them.

Q: 6. Is this lens sharper than the 80-400d? I'm thinking of replacing the 80-400d with this one for bird and general photography.

A: Hello, I have used the 80-400 lens but I do shoot with the 200-500. I find this lens to be great for wildlife photography. The price and performance makes this lens a great addition to any Nikon shooter.

Q: 7. What are the serial numbers on this lens you are carrying in stock? I read from users' comments that lens with serial number 2008365 or less are having focusing issues. I don't want to order one and have to send it back since I want to use this lens on an upcoming trip in early March. Could you confirm? If there were a firmware update on Nikon's website, would I be able download it to the lens and, if so, does it require any special equipment to do so? Or can the updated firmware be downloaded directly the camera using the lens? I appreciate any feedback.

A: Firmware updates to Nikon lenses must be applied by Nikon; there is no functionality for a user to do this at home. FWIW, I have an affected lens, but don't run into the problem much, if at all. It supposedly only affects AF operation if you are focusing while zooming. I suppose that one day I will send my lens in to Nikon for the software update but for now I'm enjoying the lens too much to bother.I believe B&H has a pretty good return policy so if you use B&H and end up with an affected lens, you may be able to swap it out for a replacement. Also, the 'issue' may affect other lenses with s/n above 2008365 - mine is in the 600xxxxx range and when I check the s/n on the Nikon site I do get a message telling me that my lens is affected and that I should send my lens in.Take a look at the Nikon website - you'll have to look up the 200-500mm and go to the product forum to find the s/n check tool, at least that's what I found on the NikonUSA site. You might also check to see if there is an authorized Nikon repair facility near you. Some of the owners of this lens have had some success taking the lens into the repair facility and having the firmware updated over an hour or two. Check out the Fred Miranda forum for the 200-500mm for more info.Good luck in your decision process.

Q: 9. Is it really a 500mm lens or a 480mm lens? Lightroom says it is 480mm when looking at photos EXIF data.

I followed the directions and had no problems adding the pieces to my 500mm f4 E lens. I removed the lens foot with a hex tool I had and that made it much easier toadd the LensCoat pieces.

Cover fits like a glove. All sections fit tight and take some effort to get in place. But this means the cover is not going anywhere. Sections are available for the entire lens, but I chose to leave the focus and control ring uncovered. I just prefer the feel of the actual lens. Would recommend this for anyone who want some extra protection for their lens.

I bought this as an experiment to see if 'camo' covers actually improve wildlife photo opportunities. I have seen many photographers with them, so I am trying it. an added bonus is the bump protection of the neoprene. The install was very easy and straight forward. The fit was spot on for a Nikon lens.

This sleeve comes in six parts, making it easy to install without having to remove the lens mounting foot and ensuring that the sleeve does not interfere with camera function. Used along with other camo gear (jacket, tripod leg sleeves, Wimberley sleeve) it effectively breaks up the lens silhouette. Perfect for wildlife photographers.

I purchased the lens cover for two reasons. First it provides protection to the surface of the lens. Second I do wildlife photography and need my equipment camouflaged. It was very easy to place over the lens and looks good.

The lens is unbelievable sharp haven't had a lot of time with it yet but the shots I have taken so far have been unbelievable better than my 200-400 F4 for sure

I have been using LensCoat covers on my lenses for a few years now and have not looked back. Lenses are expensive, and this helps provide protection for my investment. The camo pattern also helps a lot around wildlife.

There's not much to say about this lens cover. It's easy to put on, protects the lens from the elements and it looks a bit more interesting comparing to the traditional camouflage. It does the job!
