Q: 1. Various reviews and write-ups have identified possible issues with the PF element handling background specular highlights (some sample images show red/green tinted spots). I frequently photograph waterfowl, so reflections off water cannot always be avoided. Is this truly an issue with the lens? Or are the reviewers just really good at setting up a worst case scenario?

A: The 300mm PF is a spectacular lens. I took it on a couple of trips to Trinidad and Ecuador and it was fantastic. It is sharp and light. I usually shoot with a 600mm f4 or a 400mm f2.8, and while the 300mm PF f4 is not quite in their league, it is very sharp. I have yet to encounter any problems with specular highlights. Buy the lens, for hand held with a crop body it is unbeatable. Oh, it takes the 1.4 TC III very well.

Q: 2. Can this lens be used with the Nikon Z50 with the FTZ adapter, and will the lens stabilization work with this camera and adapter?

A: Yes, it is fully compatible with the FTZ adapter.

Q: 3. How does the manual focus ring work with this on, if it is one piece? How will it rotate?

A: The individual LensCoat pieces don't bind at the edges, so I've had no issues with using the manual focus at all. Actually the hardest thing to operate are the switches, but you have to expect that if you're going to cover and protect them.

Q: 4. for anyone with the new nikon 300mm f.4 vr lens and using it with D8XX body:Has anyone had their lens updated with firmware posted by Nikon?Has this update cured the VR-blur problem? Thanks!

A: Hello, I have one of the ones that was shipped from Nikon with the so called firmware update. I have used it on a D800 and D800E. I have tried to replicate the VR issue at slower shutter speeds but have found the VR to be quite effective at all speeds. Of course even with VR I try to use a fast speed when I can with the 800s. But I have deliberately tried to find the VR issue at slow speeds 60, 80 and 125 and the images are always much sharper with the VR on. All of this was with a hand held technique. I also have a Nikon 300mm 2.8 VR. The first time I actually held the lens I really liked it and hoped it would perform well. I really like this lens and will use it a lot when I need a quick shot and don't have the time to set up my tripod with the 2.8. You will notice it is not a professional lens and is constructed of plastic. However it crazy light and thats what I wanted. I will write a detailed review when I have time but so far so good.

Q: 5. Can a third party 52mm filter be used on this lens?

A: I have not bought any filters for this lens. If you have a $5,500 lens, why try to save money by buying another filter that may not work, and could damage the lens? Good luck with this great lens.

Q: 6. Is a lens cap front and back included?

A: Yes, Nikon Front Lens Cover for 200mm, 300mm, 200-400mm Lenses and LN-1 Rear Lens Cap.

Q: 7. Will this lens work with the D500

A: Works very well

Q: 8. I know this was originally scheduled to be released on Feb 5. Any idea when you might be shipping?

A: This item is still available only as a pre-order and has not come into our inventory yet. You can choose to be notified by email when this item becomes available by clicking on the Notify When in Stock icon on the product page.

Q: 9. Would this combination work for bird photography?body: Nikon D750tele lens: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VRwith teleconverter 14 III

A: I have had the Nikon AF-S 300mm F/4 PF VR lens for about 3 months. In mid-October I participated in a Glenn Bartley Photo Workshop in Costa-Rica. This is major bird photography. My primary lens for this trip was the 300mm f/4 PF VR and the Nikon AF-S 500 f/4 VR. My camera bodies are D7000 and D7100. These are cropped bodies which I believe are ideal for bird shooting. I previously had the 300mm f/4 non-VR but for hand held field work in dark locations (aka Costa Rica rainforest), I was too often disappointed. Always required tripod for a truly good shot. The new 300mm is incredibly light and small, and with the VR feature its fits the bill. The group of photographers I was with were all impressed with the size; they thought I was using a 200mm or less. And they all checked-out a few of my shots to see IQ. Everyone, including me, was impressed.Upon returning home from Costa Rica with over 5000 shots a few conclusions:- the Nikon 500mm can't be beat; incredibly sharp on good hits and good reach but ... I have to use a tripod and field work with the 500mm is not getting any easier. And remember it cost 4 to 5 times the new 300mm lens.- contrary to many reviews, I did not have any problems with the VR on the 300mm at lower shutter speeds- using the double 'Camera Slinger', I had my binoculars connected to my left shoulder strap and the camera with the 300mm on my right shoulder, and I could go all day like this with no problem.- the new 300mm worked fine with a X1.4 teleconverter, which I normally used.I believe the new Nikon 300mm f/4 PF VR should be on the top of anyone's list of birding lens; not the only lens you'll need, but it should be in your bag (or right shoulder strap).

Q: 10. Will this lens fit in the Nikon CL-L1 case?

A: Yes this lens fits in the CL-L1.

I bought this as an experiment to see if 'camo' covers actually improve wildlife photo opportunities. I have seen many photographers with them, so I am trying it. an added bonus is the bump protection of the neoprene. The install was very easy and straight forward. The fit was spot on for a Nikon lens.

I use this lens to photograph baseball games and there is a reason many pro photographers use it. It's just incredibly sharp and the autofocus happens almost instantaneously. I use it with a D700 so low light capabilities are fantastic. I've tried it with the Nikon 1.4x teleconverter and the results were equally fantastic in good light conditions. However, the autofocus does slow down ever so slightly when using the teleconverter. Pair this with a good monopod and it's action photography heaven. The first time I got a good up-close look at the photos I had taken with it at a baseball game I almost fell out of my chair! I had been using the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII before. While that lens certainly produced great results, the 300mm gets you closer to the action with even slightly better sharpness and slightly faster autofocus. The cons you all know about. It's heavy, expensive, and it requires a larger bag to carry it around. That should be no surprise though. Another con might be that it makes all your lesser lenses look inferior, haha.Bottom line if you're looking at this lens, you know why you need/want it. If you get it, you simply won't be disappointed. It really delivers.

I have been using LensCoat covers on my lenses for a few years now and have not looked back. Lenses are expensive, and this helps provide protection for my investment. The camo pattern also helps a lot around wildlife.

This is a true high-class lens, and its versatility is amazing. It is so sharp, with such great bokeh, that you can crop butterfly images and they look better than if taken by a macro lens. You can also safely slap a 2x TC III on it, double your reach, and yet still get *outstanding*image quality. I can't praise this lens highly enough.

My experience of using combinations of the Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8G with the Nikkor TC14 and especially with the Nikkor TC20 has been unsatisfactory and frustrating. Despite other people's reports, I found images from the above combinations to be too soft to be usable for medium size prints and just out right depressing when I pixel peep. I decided to make the move to this 300mm 2.8 and happily never looked back. The lens is tack sharp, edge to edge, even wide open. Contrast and color are shocking, both in tests and in the fields. When use with the TC14, I do not see noticeable image degradation. With the TC20 (stopping down to f8.0-9.0 of course), the image degradation can be corrected to a very acceptable level in LR by increasing clarity and sharpness. The lens is heavy as expected. Being a small built person, I can only hand-hold shooting a few minute at a time, and tracking free hand is definitely tiresome. As such, the VR is invaluable. I do not have a Gimbal head, but I find a mid-range Induro ballhead to be rock solid for this lens. I replace the foot plate with one from Really Right Stuff as I find the original foot to be very short, stubby, and unsafe to use as the lens handle - much less having to attach a plate to it to mount on the ballhead. This lens is one impressive piece of engineer.

I love the fast focusing this lens brings, and the sharp, crisp results from corner to corner. I am so glad I finally made the leap and purchased it.

Amazing sharpness, even in low light! Fast focus! Purchased for shooting sports. So far have only gotten to shoot baseball, but will be using for football, soccer, volleyball and dance as well. Shot with a 80-200mm 2.8 for years and finally made the purchase. A lot of $, but well worth the extra reach!

I took my new 300 out after a snow storm in remote northern California and used the lens for the first time, it was everything i hoped for and expected. Super fast focus and amazing clarity. In the late winter afternoon lower light it sucked up the light and gave me beautiful shots at ISO64. Yes, it is much heavier and larger than the f4, but that's what you get with pro glass, and i don't mind it at all.

The LensCoat was as expected, easy to put on and has a very good feel. Because of the expense of the Nikon AF-S 300 f/4E, I felt it was worth protecting from scratches so this is the first LensCoat that I have purchased. Living in NE, the insulation makes it much more comfortable to use in the cold and I love the feel of the lens in my hand. Because Ishootmostly at high shutter speeds, I don't use the VR often but can tell it would be difficult to switch back and forth with the plastic cover. Regardless, I wouldn't cut this out because it does add some water protection around the switch and it is easy enough to lift the neoprene to make the change. It works for me and I would highly recommend this cover.

I had two LensCoat lens covers for larger super telephoto lenses, and liked them both. This is the first time that I have tried a LensCoat lens cover for a smaller lens. I am really pleased this product. The fit is perfect, including access to lens switches. Not only does this provide protection to the lens, but the lens is actually easier to handle (i.e., less slippery) especially in colder weather. I liked this product so much that I bought a few other LensCoat lens covers for some of my other lenses.
