The Tiffen 46mm Skylight Filter for Photographyis a general use filter with a slight pink tint to help improve overall color accuracy and clarity. The light pink coloration helps to reduce the overall bluish cast of daylight and is especially effective when photographing landscapes and in shade.

The Sky 1A filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Most solar filters I've seen are rated at 16.5 stops. Why is this filter rated at 18 stops?

A: The solar filter minimum recommended is 16 stops, however it is not limited to be only at 16 or 16.5 stops.

Q: 2. Was wondering if this particular filter would work with the 18-55mm wide angle lens on the Canon T3?

A: Yes, the Tiffen 58mm Skylight 1-A will work with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens.

Q: 3. Is it safe to use this filter with a tracked 700mm lens on a Canon EOS R for the duration of the eclipse (~3 hr)?

A: Yes, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter is designed to be used for Solar Eclipses and other solar phenomenons.

Q: 4. Will this fit in my Canon 600mm prime as a drop in filter?

A: Yes, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (52mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) will fit into the drop in filter of the Canon 600mm f4L.

Q: 5. How is it ok for shooting the sun but not for viewing with the naked eye? How do you compose & shoot without viewing the frame?

A: The camera is not as sensitive to infrared and uv from the sun like the naked eye is. You can compose and shoot using the LCD live view.

Q: 6. Is this filter suitable for the upcoming eclipse 10/14/23?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) (B&H# TI95CND54) is absolutely suitable for photographing any annular solar eclipse such as the one on October 14, 2023 (and future such annular solar eclipses), as well as any total solar eclipse such as the one on April 8, 2024 -- and later ones, too, in 2026, 2028, etc. As with any similar photography (rather than optical viewing) style filter, the image would then be viewed using electronic means such as in digital live view mode when using a DSLR (rather than using the optical viewfinder) or with any mirrorless camera using its digital viewfinder or rear digital screen.

Q: 7. Hi! How can I tell if this will fit onto a Sony 4.5-6.3/55-210 Optical Steadyshot lens? Thank you so much in advance.

A: The Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS Lens (Black) has a front thread of 49mm. The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (77mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) will be too large for this lens. Tiffen makes the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (49mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition). Please review this link to find the correct filter size: https://bhpho.to/3vpdzBY.

Q: 8. Does this filter also act as a UV/IR cut filter? Would it be beneficial to get a separate UV/IR cut filter as well?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (67mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) does not cut UV or IR light.

Q: 9. does it work to photograph the sun and solar eclipses?

It is not ISO 12312-2 compliant and therefore not safe for direct viewing of the Sun. Always use approved ISO 12312-2 certified safety glasses when viewing the Sun directly.

Q: 10. I know it will attach to the Zenmuse X5 DJI lens, but does anyone know how much the filter itself weighs? Not package weight, but actual weight of just the filter. Thank you.

A: I don't know the exact weight, but I can tell you that the .6 and .9 ND will accurately balance the 45mm olympus (with a step up ring) and the 12mm Omympus prime lenses on the X5. Hope that helps.
