This Explore Scientific 10" f/4.5 Newtonian Truss-Tube Dobsonian Telescopeis Explore Scientific's ultimate universal design. The ingenious combination of simple yet effective mechanisms with big-aperture Newtonian optics gives the Dobsonian telescope worldwide popularity, and this telescope design typically offers the largest aperture per dollar of any telescope type. Disassembly of the scope without tools ensures trouble-free transport, even in very small cars. The entire structure has been optimized for maximum stiffness with minimal weight.

The combination of large altitude bearings with optimized metal structural design allows fine and smooth adjustment, even at higher magnifications. The collimation mechanisms for primary and secondary mirrors require no additional tools and can easily be adjusted by one person, a unique feature of this design. The 254mm aperture mirror collects more than 1500 times as much light as the naked eye. Details on planets and deep sky objects will be visible even for inexperienced observers. Many star clusters are resolved to the core, spiral structure in distant galaxies is visible, and the complex matrix of bright and dark nebulae is an unforgettable experience.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a computerized tripod for the Explore Scientific Firstlight 130mm f/4.6 Alt-Az Newtonian Telescope?

A: The Explore Scientific FirstLight 130mm f/4.6 comes with the manual Twilight I Alt-Azimuth Mount. You could replace the manual mount with this computerized Explore Scientific iEXOS-100-2 PMC-Eight Equatorial Go-To Tracker System: https://bhpho.to/3qouVtc

Q: 2. When assembled, what is the height of the eyepiece from the ground?

A: It's surprisingly low for such a large-aperture scope. Pointed straight up at zenith, the eyepiece is at eye-height for me, 67 inches. At horizon, the eyepiece only about 20 inches off the ground.

Q: 3. Is this generation 2 telescope?

A: Yes it is!

Q: 4. what's the mount size?

A: There is no mounting socket at the bottom of the base to mount it on any tripod.

Q: 5. Can this be used for Deep Sky Photography?

A: Yes, it would be possible.

Q: 6. Can you get a light shroud for the Explore Scientific 16 f/4.5 Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope?

A: I have one from Explore Scientific, which cost $120. There are others online who make 16 Dobsonian shrouds for slightly less, but I decided to go with the sure fit and hassle-free in-stock order from the scope's manufacturer.

Q: 7. Will this [safely] fit a 130mm (5.1") reflector tube?

A: This Cradle Assembly from Explore Scientific is a replacement for the cradle assembly included with the white 127mm telescope OTA but can also be used with other telescopes that would snugly fit its 5" inside diameter.

Q: 8. Can I change the focusor's position to the opposite side?

A: Unfortunately no, the focuser location cannot be changed.

Q: 9. What are the interior dimensions?

A: The case's interior measurements are 42.5 inches by 6.5 inches by 8 inches.

Q: 10. Is this a Bird Jones design?

A: Explore Scientific does not indicate if the Explore Scientific FirstLight 114mm f/4.3 Reflector Telescope BH #EXFLN114NT • MFR #FL-N114500TN has a spherical primary mirror in place of a parabolic one, with spherical aberrations corrected by sub-aperture corrector lens usually mounted inside the focusser tube or in front of the secondary mirror.

[2"] Perfect and solidly built, all metal. I actually bought this for an ETX125 OTA and it fits perfectly.

[f/5] This style of scope gives the largest aperture I could handle by myself without spending a lot of money. I had none of the problems people reported with the earlier version. Everything works well without any modifications needed. Set up is easy enough, but there are a number of loose parts to keep track of. I think it will work well for the kind of use I will give it- I camp out on a hilltop and leave my scope set up all night. This is not a scope that you would take outside for a brief viewing. The set up is too cumbersome for that.

The mass-produced, tube Dobs can be a little bit cheaper and require little set-up, but you would need to step down in size if you transport it and use it by yourself. The premium Dobs set up quickly and are light enough to let you get a bigger scope, but the cost is higher than I was willing to pay. This Explore Scientific is a big scope at a realistic price.

[f/5] The telescope works great the images I see in it are the best I have seen ever . It is easy to assemble and not real heavy the only thing that I would do is make the instructions a little easier to understand when assembling the telescope

[Alt-Azimuth] Product name is misleading. Should be Shroud *for* Explore Scientific Dobsonian. A more detailed description (overview section) is easy to miss on the mobile app.
Probably an excellent product for the intended use.

[2"] This is my first scope and am very happy with it. Not a fan of how the base assembles but it is sturdy after I applied glue to the joints. Tool-less mirror collimating is very handy. The red dot finder works well but kind of wish the brightness could go down a bit more. Unless you’re pointing at the moon, you can’t see anything but the dot in the viewfinder. Views are clear and after a little practice, easy to point and get on target. Looking forward to many nights observing with it.

[f/5] This is a big light great telescope, arrived intact with very nice packaging, didn't had any issues with movement but counterweights is essential, collimation was very easy using laser colimator, focuser is smooth and able to hold my heavy explore scientific 30mm, replace the red dot finder with terlad , every thing worked just fine , only problem was small aluminium shaving pieces were everywhere, need to clean it good before first use.

[Alt-Azimuth] This picture was taken with a Canon 40D with a T2 adaptor, no other optics used. Minimal processing.

[f/5] This is my third telescope. I got it mostly for traveling but I find my self using it quite a bit at home too. Its light, easy to put together, easy to use, versatile and of a great quality. Mine worked straight from the box without having to be collimated (even though is recommended for any telescope). Yes, its not going to be as powerful as a 8 or 10 telescope but is more than you need for the solar system (Moon, Jupiter, Saturn etc.) and even deep space observation. Wait, its getting better. It was extremely easy for me to adapt a DSLR camera to it and in the first night I got great pictures with the moon craters. The holding tray on the tripod is extremely useful. The tripod itself is sturdy and good quality.
Optics are decent. Of course it never hurts to get better quality optics (Explore Scientific have plenty of them in the store) but if you are pleased with the stock ones you dont have too. They will do the job.
I recommend it.
