Looking for a professional amplifier capable of powering medium to large studio monitors? Check out the Avantone Pro CLA-400 Studio Reference Amplifier, a dynamic, high-output, high-resolution full-range amplification system. Built in the "old school" way, the no-compromise design features high-quality Japanese components, generous VU meters, and a serious toroidal transformer linear power supply. The convection-cooled chassis provides fanless, silent operation, allowing the amplifier to be used in the same room as the monitors.

The CLA-400 boasts a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (±0.5 dB) with a power output of 360W at 8 ohms and 540W at 4 ohms per channel. The amplifier can also be used in bridged mode, providing 760W into 8 ohms. The rear panel features two XLR inputs, two XLR link outputs, two speakON connectors, and two sets of terminal block connectors. Both the terminal block and speakON connectors feature bridge configurations for flexibility in deployment. The Avantone Pro CLA-400 produces very-low distortion, steady performance under harsh conditions, and a transparent sound, making it well suited for discerning studios.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are these $100 better than the HD600s?

A: I will address some of these questions I see here. Some posters would have you waiting forever for a price drop. I haven't listened to the HD600s. I find the HD650S well worth the money. I find them comfortable to wear and I have a big head. The sound is superior to the HD598s which I do own. The one drawback to the 650's is that the cord is long and bulky. You will also need an adapter to use them on a phone or tablet. This would also apply to the HD600s as well. To me either these headphones are in your price range or they are not. If not look elsewhere for cheaper.

Q: 2. Are the cables removable/replaceable?

A: Yes."Specially modulated connecting cable (detachable) made from highly conductive OFC copper, with very-low handling noise"

Q: 3. Will the mono switch help detect if one of the stereo channels is out of phase? In other words, if the left channel is 180 degrees out of phase from the right, this can be difficult to detect with headphones, but if the channels are summed to mono, the cancellation should be audible in each ear. Is this the case with this mono switch?

A: THE ONLY THING THAT IS EFFECTED IS THE LOW FREQ. SIGNALS. ONE IN THE RT. EAR & ONE IN THE LEFT. TELLING THE DIFF. IS HARD ENOUGH WHEN THE SOUND IS COMING FROM SPEAKERS. MAKE SURE OF THE SOURCES ARE CORRECT BEFORE YOU START. AS MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD ME WAS KISSKEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID WITH LOVE DR PETE

Q: 4. Please explain the mono switch. What I'm looking for his a device that will mix the stereo channels into mono and deliver the mono signal to both headphones channels. Can this unit do that?

A: The stereo/mono switch sums the stereo input to mono. In this mode all headsets connected will be fed a mono signal. (Same signal to both left and right).

Q: 5. Is this the older model that comes in a silver box or the newer one that comes in a black box?

A: it came with a black box

Q: 6. How can customers make informed decisions when buying headphones from B&H ($500 or otherwise) when frequency response plots aren't provided, let alone +/- on the frequency specs?

A: These are the only hard specs provided by AKG. Frequency Bandwidth: 10 Hz to 39.8 kHzSensitivity: 105 dB/VMaximum Input Power: 200 mWImpedance: 62 ? Truly the best determining factor is an actual audition of the product. B&H offers a 30-day return policy if these headphones are not suitable for any reason at all. AKG does offer a thorough review: a href= http://bit.ly/1yR2NyS target= _blank http://bit.ly/1yR2NyS/a

Q: 7. External DAC drive these like Cambridge, well I still need a headphone amp?

A: If the DAC can handle 300-600 ohm headphones, then you would not need amp amp.

Q: 8. How do the light arms attach to the copystand? Is it a clamp or a permanent mounting bracket that is affixed to the stand?

A: Will this also work with the 47 Motorized Kaiser 205603?

Q: 9. Does the HD650 come with a set of replacement earcups?

A: No they do not,

Q: 10. What is the current draw of the AC power supply?

A: AT this time there isn't much information provided by the manufacturer other than having a 30v input coming from a 130v wall socket.

[< 0.1% ] I was looking for a capable pro audio power amp for my Dali Euphonia MS5's when Avantone announced the release of their CLA-400. I will admit, MS5's are really audiophile grade speakers, so why drive them with a pro audio amp? My response is, why not? Most of the offerings in the pro audio market are active/fan cooled, very few if any convection cooled. And if there are any like QSC & Crown, they no longer make them. I did not want fan/active cooling. Furthermore, most are class D and I had already tried class D; not impressed despite all the gobs of power. No, not for me; NO class D! The Avantone Pro CLA-400 came at just the right time and I placed an order soon as I was convinced it was the amp to try. With this CLA-400, over 500 watts @ 4 ohms has really revealed what I knew my speakers were capable of! It's rather astounding how much more life they are breathing into the music! Solid tuneful and impactful bass, very wide and deep soundstage, very musical! There's no turning back for me; I am rather gobsmacked at the sheer musicality of my sound system. WOW! Just WOW!

[< 0.1% ] If your mix sounds good on the Cubes, it will translate well on pretty much anything! Very revealing of the mid frequencies allowing accurate adjustments accordingly. Very happy with purchase! Note- Right out of the box they sound rather rough, breaking in is a must. Also not suitable as a main (Only Set) monitoring system.

[-70 dB ] It was time for a new pair of headphones, and I was looking for something affordable and comfortable. The Sennheiser 400 PRO Studio Reference Headphones are a great tool. These fit over my entire ear(great since I am suseptible to blackheads and sweat behind my ears) and are comfortable while working for extended periods. I am working on the final mixes of my most recent album, and these are helping me to accurately judge the balance and EQing of my songs even while working at modest volumns.

[Convection] The Avantone CLA-200 Studio Reference Amplifier is easily the best purchase I made all year. I own a pair of Yamaha NS 10M Studio Monitors and for years I just used random amplifiers to power them. I decided this year to invest in a better quality amplifier to improve the overall sound quality of my Monitors. After weeks of research And reading countless reviews I decided to go with the CLA-200. I must say the shipping was immediate and I received the new amplifier the very next day after ordering. I can't stress how impressed I was with the sound quality the CLA-200 brought to my NS-10's. The clarity and the frequency response was just amazing. I highly recommend the CLA-200 for any and all Yamaha NS10 users. You won't be disappointed!

[2] I bought a single Avantone Powered MixCube to run in mono to check mixes for midrange, and it does exactly that. I love the convenience of the powered model. I've seen these in just about every recording studio I've worked in, and now I know why: they provide a crucial checkpoint for dialing in a mix's midrange and overall dynamics. I'll be relying on this to check every mix from now on. Just wish I would have had this years ago!

[< 0.1%] Single drivers make phantom centre focused and tight. Makes VXT 8's phantom centre appear smeared! Nice opened mids. Awesome complement to KRK VXT 8's. Loud little things!

[> 103 dB] I'm actually amazed at how much of a difference this pop filter made in my voice over recordings. I was having difficulty with popping Ts and hissing on every S and I took off the foam ball that came with my mic and put this filter on, about an inch from the mic, and not only are the popping and hissing completely gone, but without the foam, my voice is much clearer and richer. I'm using a $60 Samson Q2U mic that can be plugged directly into the computer's USB port, so for a little more than $100 I'm getting really professional sound.
