Bundled with a vibration-reducing shockmount and a compact stand mount, the limited edition white Neumann TLM 102 W Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphonelarge-diaphragm condenser microphone brings renowned Neumann sound quality to a price point that's inclusive to home producers, working musicians, and independent singer-songwriters. The capsule's high SPL rating of 144 dB permits the recording of percussion, drums, amplifiers, and other loud sound sources clearly and without distortion. With its 8 to 12 kHz treble boost, the TLM 102 imparts a silky vocal presence while avoiding pronounced sibilance.

The mic utilizes a cardioid polar pattern to provide directional sound pickup in front of the capsule and strong rejection behavior behind it, yielding less background noise than most other polar responses. The integrated pop shield reduces breath noise and vocal plosives, though external pop filters are available for even more control. The TLM 102's transformerless output stage aids the mic in achieving a clean character with plenty of reach in the bass range, and it delivers resistance to electromagnetic interference.

Neumann developed the TLM 102 as a universal talent for vocal and instrumental recordings. Its finely tuned sound signature especially accents the area of 8 to 12 kHz which is crucial for human voices. The recordings get a silky elegance typical of large-diaphragm microphones; the voice gets a noble presence in the overall mix. Nevertheless, the TLM 102 remains easy to handle and deals masterfully with critical consonants or sibilants, thanks to the integrated pop shield.

The TLM 102 also processes extreme volume and jumps in dynamics without distortion. That makes it an excellent choice for miking loud amps and drums. It reproduces sound pressure levels of up to 144 dB (e.g. very loud trumpet at a distance of about 4") with great clarity: open, detailed, with powerful bass and refined treble.

The TLM 102 stands for legendary sound on a budget. Neumann remodeled the production and omitted non-vital functions such as pattern, pad, and low-cut switches. When you hear the TLM 102, you'll immediately notice what they did not omit: the Neumann sound, which remains faithful to its big role models.

The TLM series works with a transformerless output stage to enable a clean and direct sound, very "close" to the acoustic source, and a powerful bass transmission all the way down to the lowest frequencies. Its transformerless output stage also makes the microphone resistant to electromagnetic fields and minimizes transmission losses.

  • Easy handling for vocal and instrumental recordings
  • Distortion-free sound even at extreme sound pressure levels up to 144 dB
  • Slight treble boost for silky vocals (independent of music genre)
  • Built-in pop shield reduces vocal plosives
  • Cardioid polar pattern lessens background noise
  • XLR 3-pin output
  • Requires 48V phantom power
  • Includes stand mount and vibration-reducing shockmount

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I am updating my Samson MTR 231, what differences should I expect between both mics, please?

A: In comparison, the Sennheiser is the more feature rich. 3 step low cut filter and 3 step pad. You are also getting more selectable pickup patterns. These allow you to more precisely tailor the mics performance to a specific application. Comparatively the mic are similar in self noise, however the Sennheiser offers better specs in dynamic range as well as signal to noise ratio. Regarding frequency response, the Sennheiser is relatively flat, with the Samson featuring a slight boost in the higher frequencies. This will generally be interpreted as the Sennheiser having a warmer sound.

Q: 2. Can I use this mic for rap vocals or any type of music vocals??

A: This mic is great for rap vocals. It has great clarity and sound.

Q: 3. Is this the best mic for recording a quartet or small choir or group of instrumentalists where the microphone will be 5 to 10 feet way from the performers?

Q: 4. What is the Dynamic Range of the Rode NT1 Signature Series?

Q: 6. Could this mic be used in it's Figure 8 pattern along with a Senn 416 for M+S recording?

A: Yes absolutely.

Q: 7. The specs says : Output Connector 1 x XLR 3-Pin. How can I connect this mic to my pc?

A: This microphone has an XLR analog connector and will not plug directly in to your computer. In order to use this microphone with your PC you will need to use an Audio Interface. A simple solution for a one-mic set up is the MXL Mic Mate. You will need a short XLR to XLR cable to connect the mic to the interface. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/576806-REG/MXL_MIC_MATE_PRO_MicMate_Pro_USB.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/845507-REG/Kopul_m4006_Kopul_Studio_Elite_4000.html Alternately, if you intend to use the microphone only with your computer, you may want to consider a USB microphone. The Samson Satellite is a good choice because it can be used with Mac, PC, or iOs devices, and it has features that are important when recording or streaming. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1471366-REG/samson_sasat_satellite_usb_ios_broadcast_mic.html I would encourage you to give us a call at 800-606-6969 and a Pro Audio specialist will be happy to assist in choosing the right mic for you.

Q: 10. Would this mic work in a large group of 15 people arranged in a circle with this mic in the center of the circle? Or do the players have to be within a foot of the mic?

A: While this mic has an omni-directional pickup pattern option and could pick up sound 360 degrees around it, however distant those people are from the mic is how it would sound. As well, you would certainly pick up a large amount of room noise. Typically, for a quality recording you would want the source of the audio to be no more than 12'' from the mic itself.

[2.15 lb] The Neumann mic is a magnificent piece of equipment. It delivers the highest quality sound at a fair price. A huge step up from my former mic, which will be nameless. I couldn’t be happier.

[11 x 7.6 x 4.3"] I started doing vocals with a low-end mic that came along with the Focusrite Scarlett Studio 2nd Gen kit. Then I upgraded my gear to Rode NT1-A mic and subsequently with AKG mic, but was not getting the clear and natural vocals and have to do a lot of plugins/EQs. Finally, I got this Neumann TLM-102 after reading the reviewsand research.
This is an excellent mic! Vocals are so smooth and natural. Need no or a very little EQ to get the perfect vocals. Very warm and strong vocals which allowsme to easily play around within the DAW. The recordings are no less than a high-grade professional studio. Noise level is approx nil (super quite) and with a pop-shield it works simply amazing. You won't regret the investment you do with this little master!
Lastly, quick delivery by B&H and excellent packing!

[Phantom Power] I'm familiar with TLM-102s and have recorded with them for a number of years. The 102 I recently purchased from B&H has had no problems so far and has already provided lots of audio at the high level of quality I need for my projects, even standing up to an unorthodox recording setup for COVID-19. This product has cemented my opinion of 102s as one of the best value Neumann microphones.

[Side Address] If your budget allows, please do not settle for anything less than the Neumann 102. Over my 12 years of recording in a studios across the world, Neumann mics have provided the best sound overall across a diverse range of vocals. From singers, choirs, rappers, or broadcast, this is a must have! Do not settle if the budget allows.

[Solid-State] I do VO's in a home voice over booth. I have an average voice at best. So, I'm always looking for a mic that enhances my voice to its fullest potential i.e. full, smooth lower range all the way through to the higher range with little to no sibilance (S'ing). AND, little to know popping my Ps, T's and D's. The Neumann LM 102 pretty much gives me all that for a very good price. As a result, my confidence goes up, as does my time savings, since I'm not having to do multiple takes due to the aforementioned. Win, win for me.

[White] I’m a songwriter and this is my reference mic (main vocal mic is sony c-100). This adds something new to my vocal chain that I love without even having to EQ or compress. Raw vocals give an amazing cut for post production. Great low self noise. Dynamic range is awesome. Love it all. Highly recommend.

[Side Address] Used for some vocals. A bit of a boost in the 6k area I find, but overall a strong vocal presence. Not bad on guitar amps, but with the boost, it skews the sound. Great middle-of-the-road price for either pro or home studios. Not a bad go-to microphone for most vocals, especially female vocals.

[Mono] Am looking to buy a microphone and this one is on my list. Since I've not tried it this is not a review but a comment.

B&H you include a useless YouTube video of a guy talking German who does not even demonstrate the microphone but just says, I like it! I just wonder if anyone there watches these videos before adding them to the product description and wasting customers' time.
