$6,225.00 $8,590.50

For professional videographers, field recordists, podcasters, and Ambisonics enthusiasts who need pristine audio capture of up to eight microphones, the MixPre-10 II Kit: 32-Bit Multitrack Field Recorder & ORCA Bagmultitrack field recorder is an ideal tool. Record up to ten tracks of external sources (eight channels via XLR-1/4" combo jacks and two channels via a 3.5mm mini jack)—as well as a stereo mix—at sample rates and resolutions of up to 192 kHz / 32-bit, all while monitoring audio in headphones. If you choose to use the MixPre-10 II to stream audio, you'll be able to achieve sample rates up to 96 kHz.

The MixPre-10 II offers many upgrades over its predecessor. Chief among these features is the ability to record at 32-bit floating point to an internal SD card. The unit also functions as an audio interface capable of 32-bit floating point streaming over USB to a Mac computer. This makes it nearly impossible for you to clip (distort) audio on the way in. Whether you're recording hot or making use of the unit's astounding 142 dB dynamic range, you'll only be handicapped by the quality of your microphone.

The device sports the same Kashmir preamps as the MixPre-10T with one key difference: an even lower noise floor, at 130 dBV. With line-level XLR and 3.5mm outputs, you can monitor in both headphones and on a compatible line-level device at the same time. Timecode connections are made possible via BNC, HDMI, and 3.5mm connections.

All of this is available in an eight-channel package that can be powered from wall chargers, AA batteries, or Sony L-series batteries. Whether you use the device in an advanced or basic capacity, the MixPre-10 II will suit any intimate, field-based production.

Record all 10 input channels and your stereo mix at the same time in 44.1, 48, 96, or 192 kHz resolution.

When connected to a Mac or Windows computer, the MixPre-10 II can serve as a 12-input / 4-output USB audio interface at up to 96 kHz for your favorite audio recording software.

The unit can send a complete 32-bit float audio signal over USB when connected to a Mac computer running macOS Catalina (version 10.15 or later).

For inputs, you'll find eight XLR-1/4" combo jacks and a 3.5mm auxiliary input. 48V Phantom power is available. Audio output connections are handled over 3.5mm connections and XLR line-level outs. Timecode I/O is made possible via 3.5mm connections, HDMI, and BNC.

Adjust the limiters, change the bit-depth, shift panning, delay, and polarity in the stereo mix and filter out extraneous bass rumble with low-cut filters. Whether you record to an SD card or to your computer over USB, the MixPre-10 II can be customized to your needs.

Thanks to the device's timecode generator, you can even trigger recording from the camera. With built-in Bluetooth, you can control the unit over the Wingman app, available from Sound Devices. This app displays high-resolution meters, current timecode, transport buttons, and more.

Timecode from a camera or master TC clock can be patched into the MixPre-10 II's HDMI Type-D jack, 3.5mm aux input, or BNC timecode input. In any case, the device automatically detects the incoming timecode frame rate and stamps the recorded files accordingly. The low-drift internal timecode generator can be set to pause when recording stops, jam-sync to a temporary timecode source, or continue in "free run" mode for up four hours after powering down.

Upon installation of the Ambisonics plug-in (available separately from the Sound Devices plug-in store), field recordists, game developers, and VR content creators will appreciate the support for simultaneous multiformat recording (AmbiX, FuMa, LR Stereo, and LR Binaural), real-time binaural/stereo monitoring, and A- to B-Format conversion.

Buy the Musician Plug-In from the Sound Devices online store to add in-unit music recording to your MixPre-10 II. The Musician Plug-In adds built-in features and effects like overdub, reverb, and vocal air. Create Music Projects to lay down backing tracks and use them live or at home for writing or practicing.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What accessory can I use to mount this on a mic stand or neck of a tripiod?

A: Hello Patrick. All MixPre II Series recorders have ¼-inch, 20-threaded screw mounts on their top and bottom panels for mounting to gear. Please use the attached allen wrench to pop-up the screw by pushing the straight part of the wrench up into the bottom of the MixPre-3 II.

Q: 2. Can the Canon R5 output timecode over HDMI to the MP6ii so audio/video can be easily synced in post by timecode?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II can input timecode via HDMI that is sent from the Canon EOS R5 Digital Camera.

Q: 3. If you have a thumbdrive in the usb, does it automatically back up after every take?

A: Yes, the MixPre will back up audio to a thumb drive as you’re recording. Be sure to reference our Approved Media page when selecting a USB thumb drives as not all thumb drives will work. (Approved Media: https://www.sounddevices.com/mixpre-series-approved-media-list/)

Q: 4. How long would this last on a 20,000 mAh battery via USB-C? Or, how big of a mAh battery needed to power it all day?

A: Sound Devices has not published a benchmark for battery life with USB-C power banks, as this figure would be highly situational, but 20,000 mAh is the recommended capacity to use with the MixPre-3 II for better battery life than the included AA battery sled.

Q: 5. Can this trigger from a Canon EOS R if connected via the usb mini input?

A: Via USB, No. If your camera can send timecode over HDMI it will work. Set your camera timecode to be RECORD RUN and make sure it is being sent via the HDMI cable. Set your MixPre6 for timecode record trigger. I have done this with other cameras - it works very well.

Q: 6. Can it be used for online chat e.g. Skype or Discord?

A: Yes, you can. Just use the usb-c port to connect with your computer.

Q: 7. Will this work with an Alexa Plus?

A: Yes, you can use the Mixpre-3 II with the camera but will need adapters to connect the recorder's 3.5mm TRS output to the camera's XLR 5-pin audio input. You could use a 3.5mm to XLR 3-pin male cable such as the Kopul Stereo Right-Angle 1/8" Male Mini-Jack to XLR Male Cable - 3' (B&H # KORSMXM03) combined with a TecNec 5-Pin XLR Male to 3-Pin XLR Female .(B&H # TEXLM5XLF18I).r

Q: 8. Does the Mix Pre 3 can record trigger with the Red Komodo?

A: Recording on the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II Field Recorder can be triggered via timecode or HDMI timecode. If the RED Digital Cinema Komodo Camera can output a timecode trigger signal it should be able to trigger recording on the MixPre-3 II.

Q: 9. Will using rechargeable Ni-MH AA batteries be an issue? The video specifically recommends Lithium ion making it unclear if there is a loss in runtime or another reason not to use other types of AA batteries in lieu of buying the LMount sled.

A: NiMh batteries even when fully charged provide only 1.4 volts or with 8 in the sled a voltage of 11.2 volts as compared to alkaline or lithium batteries that provide 12 volts. Even better are power banks with their USB-C power port and a cable to the Mix Pre. I can power my Mix Pre II for more than 18 hours with a 20000 mAh power bank. The sleds all block access to the SD card slot which can be a problem.

Q: 10. Can you jam timecode from a camera that sends timecode over hdmi like the Sony FS5 without leaving the hdmi cable plugged in?

A: The MixPre does not see timecode from an external source, unless it is recorded onto an unused audio track. It does have a generator that can feed your other devices, such as a camera.

[Audio-for-Video] Having used various consumer to prosumer mixers, and one SD 633 I can confidently say that this is one of the best budget friendly mixers on the market right now. That being said for I will mention that it is not without its faults. My biggest quarrel with this mixer is hands down the release pins on the neutrik inputs. They are often difficult to release and I have seen them break off before. I am aware that Sound Devices has great customer support, and is able to repair them if they break. However, I do believe they should change those pins in the future. Additionally the pins that connect the battery sled option are similarly flimsy, and often need to be bent back into place. I have since transitioned to operating off of the hirose port using a V-mount battery. That may have solved my problem, but the 3 and 6 variants do not have the hirose option which is where I feel like more people will face that issue. The last issue I've experienced, and it has only happened once after a two days of shooting, was I did have it stop mid recording due to an error. I didn't have time to read the full message, and I haven't seen it since. However, it did ruin about 7 seconds of a take. Luckily I had been running timecode, so I was able to start the recording again quickly with minimal loss. Having mentioned all of the negative, there is still plenty of mention for the positive. Over all I still think for its price, this is a five star mixer. I couldn't quite say the same for the Mix-Pre 3 or 6. However, the 10 has a great user interface. It can run 24 or 32 bit, depending on your preference. 8 channels is usually a sufficient number on smaller to mid size sets. It can generate its own timecode. The hirose power option makes powering the mixer incredibly reliable. It works great with some third party control surfaces (I personally use the Launch Control XL). The channels have a clean sound, and all in all it was a purchase that I am very happy with, and would highly recommend.

[Field Recorder] Using this device is very satisfying. Although small, the touchscreen is surprisingly accurate. The feature set is quite useful and having so many channels makes it significantly easier to just record everything and give more options to post. The device is rather tall when in a bag so I needed to come up with alternative Hirose cables in order to power the MixPre from an external power distributor without putting too much strain on the connector in my OR-280 since the MixPre has the Hirose connector at a somewhat inconvenient angle for how tall most Hirose male connectors are. The many options for timecode syncing are really useful. The external keyboard support and the auto-backup onto a USB thumb drive are also really nice features that lend to a lot more peace of mind. The pre-amps are excellent and the limiters really sound great. Very happy with this device.

[Field Recorder] The preamps are INSANE! So crisp clean! This is such a great device at such a reasonable price! My only little complaints on what I would improve on is instead of having to go into the modes to change the Gain Knobs to Basic Mode if you don't want the knobs to act like faders to L/R, but it's only one or the other....I would have include the option to operate the knob as a fader, but if you push down and turn then it adjusts the gain for the ISO channels. Instead of keeping the Knobs to act like faders, push down on knob, press the gain option, and then press the extremely small arrows or reach into side of bag (if not in bad then nevermind) for the HP/Menu knob to adjust the gain. It's such a hassle to adjust the gain! That's another thing....I know the recorder is small so limited on space...but having the HP/Menu knob on the top would have been SUPER convenient...instead of the right side inside my bag. The Sound Devices 688/664 and the news one have it on top!

[Yes] I have had numerous Sound Devices units over the years and they are simply the best for the money. The pre amps and limiters are game changing in capturing location audio. I originally got into Sound Devices with the MixPre D series because I needed the limiters for loud shooting environments where I was solo shooting without an audio operator. So good. The quality of sound is night and day from using the built in pre amps on cameras. Over the years I have upgraded a few times to the latest MixPre 10ii. The MixPre 10 ii has completely overhauled my workflow and opened up so many opportunities to record high quality multichannel applications.

I shoot mostly documentary style events and corporate videos. The value for the money that you get with the MixPre 10 ii is solid. From round-table discussions, interviews, live bands, weddings, and everything in between, I have not found anything this unit cannot do for my needs.

My only recommendation is to make sure you budget extra for a bag and all the connectors and batteries you are going to need. Probably $1,000 for all the extras that will come. I run mine with the Sony NP series batteries and it does great, as long as you don't go cheep on the batteries. Get good ones with high capacity from IDX or Anton Bauer.

[12] A lot of people love the MixPre series and some don't. All the complaints I heard were about the form factor and the touch screen. I am one of the people that love the MixPre. Audio quality is incredible and I like the touch screen. The headphone knob is useful for setting gain and other settings but not as convenient when in a bag.

About bags. I tried a few and settled on a K-Tek Stingray Junior X. I liked that layout more than the Orca.

I usually use 24 bit mode with analog limiters but really like the 32 bit mode. For not much more file size you can have great dynamic range and not have any concern about clipping. One is the nice benefits is you set the playback volume when you set the gain so when you are working on audio it all comes in loud instead of needing to be boosted. Since you can't clip there is no concern.

[12] Having used the first version of the Mixpre 10 (the 10T) I feel like they took an already amazing unit and made it even more amazing times 10! I like that I can adjust the limited settings, and whenever I need to I can take advantage of this CRAZY amount of dynamic range with 32 bit recording! One other feature that I noticed was when you stop recording, your red ring around the recording joystick now blinks to indicate that it’s backing up the recording to the USB thumb drive (if you have one installed). I used to wonder why my 10T wouldn’t shut off right away when hitting the power switch and it was because it was still backing up to the thumb drive...it’s nice to know that something is happening now on the 10ii...it’s the little things in life! Nice job Sound Devices!

Oh and btw, same great sound as the 10T provided me many times before! Super clean, super low noise, just an all around indispensable tool!

[Yes, 3 V] This is an amazing little recorder! The Wingman App is super handy as well! Yes you don't get many outputs (and wish you can adjust the L and R output levels separately unless that is something I totally missed) however this does get the job done for almost all of my ENG/Corporate work! Limiters are pretty impressive too. I would say my only few complaints I have is that having the SD card slot on the bottom is a tad annoying, but I understand needing space for everything else on the right side. My only solution to that was buying a USB Male to USB Female 1.5ft Cable (trust me....some thumb drives and flash drives inserted in the super tight USB port is NOT fun to take out) connected to the left side and getting a PNY 512GB Elite-X Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive - 200MB/s inserted was quite the useful alternative.....but that meant having to spend MORE money just for the convenience instead of having to lie the bag down to reach the SD card every time your client asks for the media. Not being able to save previous meta data like track names, project names, and scene names in case you come back to them later on is a tad annoying, but not the end of the world. Having the headphone/menu scroll knob on the side is probably the most irritating part of the unit. I have to keep the right side of the bag open a bit to reach it. Having it on the top (if it was possible) would have been so nice! Other than a couple other minor complaints.....I would say this device is a REALLY good back-up unit to your main kit. Heck depending on your line of work....this probably might just everything that you need! HIGHLY recommend it!

[8] I own both a MixPre 10T and 10ii. My chief issue was the fact that USB recording to a computer was post fader, whereas pre fader internally. This made it impossible to mix in real time for listening or feed to a camera or board without affecting the external recording. Firmware upgrade 5.01 changed that. Now there are 12 USB channels, which can be assigned to any input, and 1-10 can be either pre or post fader. This allows the both the 10T and 10ii to work like a split console.

The headroom and low noise afforded by 32 bit float recording in the 10ii is amazing, but only internally. The USB feed is only 24 bit, without any improvement in head room. I'm still hoping.

5.01 also fixed the automatic copy to a thumb drive. The red record light flashes during the transfer, and it doesn't crash if you look at it crooked as before.

Bluetooth remote operation is also improved, with line-of-sight control possible at 50' or more.

I highly recommend 10 MixPre 10ii for mobile recording.

[Yes] I have used this recorder for a week not and it is awesome. Packed with features and an incredible build quality. I wish that it came with the mini XLR cables for output, included in the package, as they are expensive and not easy to find. Really love this recorder.

[Audio-for-Video] It has been a long time since I purchased a field mixer. I made the decision to purchase this one so I could finally record each channel individually and internally. I was also impressed with the 32-bit float recording. The hidden gem that I really didn't think about until I started using it is the Wingman app that allows me to easily input metadata AND start/stop the audio recording from my IPhone. That is a super cool feature that has proven to be very handy!! I'm really pleased with the features and quality of this mixer.
