Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. With the multiplier on the A6500 what does the mm become roughly? I am trying to avoid a teleconverter if possible to retain the 2.8. Thanks!

A: The Sony crop sensors are a 1.5 multiplier. The 70-200 f/2.8 would have the equivalent of 105-300 on the a6300/a6500.

Q: 2. When it will be available to buy?

A: I apologize, but this type of request cannot be taken care of through this feature of our website. Please contact our Customer Service department by entering Live Chat, emailing directly to cs@a href= http://bhphoto.com, target= _blank bhphoto.com,/a or calling us toll-free at 800.221.5743.

Q: 3. Just got it today. Is it normal that the lens twisting just a tiny little once locked on mount. It seems to be a little loose , I guess that is what I meant to say.

A: My FE 2.8 70-200 GM OSS will wiggle back and forth very slightly when mounted on my a7RII.

Q: 4. Does this len work for a7

A: Yes it does. They are all E-mount. So it is supposed to work just fine.

Q: 5. Is the new g master lens focus by wire ?

A: While yes, it is focus by wire, and while yes, I hate focus by wire, I recently picked up the 24-70/2.8 GM. That lens is also focus by wire, but unlike all it's little brothers and sisters, this one is not accelerated. If you spin the ring to a specific point on the lens, it will focus the same distance every time. I think Sony realized that they had made a huge mistake with all the preceding lenses (especially since they were marketing these cameras to the video community as well; the video community is heavily manual focus), and adjusted some parameters to do away with the whole acceleration thing because NO ONE LIKES IT. I'm so happy that this was addressed with the GM series. It had me super worried about my purchase until I held it in my hands.

Q: 6. Is this lens compatible with the Sony A 6000

A: Yes. This lens is fully compatible with the Sony Alpha a6000.

Q: 7. Zoom ring looser as it gets closer to 200mm ??

A: I have both the Canon and Sony 70-200 mm and they are about the same.It seems right to me.

Q: 8. what is the main difference from the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens that costs a lot more?

A: The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II has improved optics (significant difference in my personal opinion after I traded my original one from the II), it's 30% lighter, and has a better linear AF motor for improved speed and accuracy.

Q: 9. This one (G Master) or that one (Sony G F/2.8 OSS II)... I use Sony A7R II and Sony A99! Sony G is an A-Mount, also E-Mount via adapter, but 500 dollars more... I don't know which has better IQ to grap some of those! Pros and cons

A: The Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS E-mount Lens has not yet been release, as it is a new item that was recently announced, and is not yet stated to begin shipping until July 29, 2016. As such, I have yet to see any lens testing from reputable testers to compare the optical quality of the two lenses. The newer Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS E-mount Lens has 11 aperture blades for a more rounded aperture and bokeh (the A-mount lens used 9 blades), and also has more optical elements designed for more correction from aberration and to focus all light at a single point to increase sharpness, and also has a shorter minimum focus distance. The above are the comparisons from the lens' specifications released by Sony. Comparing the MTF chart, the newer Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS E-mount Lens seems slightly sharper, especially when viewing the corner/edge performance. However, for a comparison in real-world testing, you would have to wait until the lens is released and available for testing.I will add one point; if you are using both A-mount and E-mount cameras, and you only want to have to purchase one lens, then the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 G SSM II would be recommended. While both are good lenses, you may use an adapter to use the A-mount lens on the smaller E-mount, but there is no adapter to use the smaller E-mount lens on the larger A-mount.

Q: 10. With the lens being so heavy, do you need to handle it from the tripod collar or will the E-Mount handle the weight?

A: like most 70-200/2.8 lenses on any system, I wouldn't recommend using it just on the camera mount. I have found that the e-mount on the a7rii is strong enough to hold it but there is a fair amount of torque and anything in the wrong direction or too quick could put it past it's tolerance. That expensive of gear should be treated with respect I think. I'm just not one to risk it when the collar isn't unwieldy in the first place

[0.375 lb] I am a fan of Sony’s GM lenses. I’ve take some choice photos with this lens. It’s well worth it.

[Bayonet] This is a really magnificent lens. It's extremely sharp. Perfectly built and beautiful to the eye. It may be a little heavy but that doesn't bother me at all. I've used it mainly for portraits so far. It produces pretty nice bokeh and performs flawless in every moment. Here are a few shots made with the lens and the A7ii

[0.375 lb] Everything you would expect. Big, fairly heavy - sharp and contrasty at all apertures. Fairly quick AF. The best choice if you need a large, fixed aperture and are willing to pay the price!

[0.375 lb] I have been slowly switching over from Canon to Sony for 4 years and now I am completely Sony. The A9 was the final piece to replace my 1Dx. Once I had access to a full frame mirrorless that will give me the frame rate necessary for Wildlife and Sports, I could also move on to native lenses for the Sony FE system. My Sony FE 70-200 focuses faster than any lens I have owned, it's tack sharp and feels really good to use. I am holding on to my Canon 600mm F4 II and using it with the metabones adapter until Sony offers their own super long glass.

[Bayonet] Breathtaking. I have only my own copy but it is breathtaking. Not as heavy as I expected. Feels great with or without the battery grip on the full-frame mirrorless body. Very pleased with the multiple focus holds. Using an a7rii, results suggest the effort of wielding multiple bodies and/or repeated sensor-soiling lens changes with a bag full of primes: 70/90/105/135/180/200 -- at least six 2.8 primes in one lens with superb buttery bokeh throughout. Surely some will find something to quibble about -- no one thing can ever please everyone at any price -- but so far I have found nothing. I waited three months for my copy. Now I understand why. Zero regrets at this point. No it is not overpriced. Get one, take your shots and discover this gem for yourself. More reading about this lens cannot truly convey what it may or may not be able to do for your photography. Most of the highly technical overlong web-sourced product reviews can be pompous fifth-grade science projects at best, some more so than others. It seems like just yesterday that everyone was endlessly fretting about the availability of lenses for the Sony mirrorless ILCs. That's really is ancient history now. My Sony family: 35/1.4, 85/1.4, 24-70/2.8, and this one -- the one that pushed me all the way to actually writing something. I'm sure it will also be amazing on the quick crop-sensor bodies as well looking forward to that. Images? Get this lens and make your own. Cheers :)

[0.375 lb] I have never owned a 70-200 lens, & had a bit of a void in my lens distances. I'm glad I waited for this to come. I'm still getting to know it's nuances, but very happy so far.

[Bayonet] My favorite Sony lens this far!

[Bayonet] I LOVE this lens. I have owned both the EF70-200mm f/2.8L II as well as the VR2 version of the 70-200mm f/2.8 in Nikon. The new GMaster has raised the bar as far as I'm concerned, especially when shooting portraits with the EYE AF mode. It's difficult to get an eye out of focus even wide open and working in close to my subjects. The integral tripod foot is similar to Nikon's and is a superior to the Canon in removal with it's quick release. The lens is SHARP! Tons of contrast and really nice neutral color rendition will allow me to use this for both stills as well as video projects. Sony knocked this one out of the park...

[Bayonet] I love this lens. An added plus is connecting a 2X Teleconverter to it. This lens is a must have.
