Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What are the cable's connections?

A: The MX396 is supplied without a connector. Typically, an installer will use phoenix block-type connectors or XLR connectors on the cable. It is OK to separate the cable wires out to three separate XLR connectors.

Q: 2. I'm looking for a microphone to capture dancer audio on a stage (steps, claps, tambourine, etc.). I'm also hoping to pick up the audience applause/cheering with the same microphone. I'm hoping I could tape this down on the edge of the stage to achieve that. Has anyone done this? What were your results? What kind of microphone would work better? Thanks!

A: This mic will work for you but be aware that the sound coming form the front of the mic will be much louder than from behind it since it is a cartioid microphone.

Q: 3. Is this mic picking up footsteps on a theater stage?

A: This is designed for surface-mounted applications on conference tables, podiums, lecterns, etc...

Q: 4. Will this mic work on a DSLR?

A: Yes. I use it with a DSLR as well as a basic consumer level camcorder. Youll need a 3.5mm to 3-Pin XLR Female adapter cable though.

Q: 5. Has anyone tried hiding this mic in clothing so you can't see it? Is it a good option for doing interviews in loud locations?

A: The Shure UL4 UniPlex Cardioid Subminiature Lavalier Microphone can be used under clothing with a rubber mount like the LMC Sound CMTBK C Mount Universal Lavalier Mount (B&H # LMCMTBK) or the LMC Sound CMTVPRBK C Mount Vampire Clip Universal Lavalier Mount (B&H # LMCMTVPRBK) which has a dual-pin back. The mic can also be mounted and isolated with soft foam pads like the Viviana Pads Soft Foam Mounts for Lavalier Microphones - 12-Pack, Black (B&H # VIVPB12P), which can also be used to secure the rubber mount to clothing or skin. To prevent additional noise from cable friction, you can use the Bubblebee Industries Rubber Lavalier Cable Savers - 4-Pack (B&H # BUBBILCS4BL). The mic's cardioid pickup pattern will help to reduce background noise.

Q: 6. Is this compatible with blx4r

A: The Shure UL4 UniPlex Cardioid Subminiature Lavalier will be compatible with the BLX1 body pack that is compatible with the BLX4R receiver.

Q: 7. Is this compatible with the Shure SLXD1 body pack?

A: No. This version of the Shure UL4 UniPlex Cardioid Subminiature Lavalier Microphone has a standard 3-pin XLR connector for connection to the mic input on a mixer, amplifier, recorder, camera, etc. The Shure SLXD1 Bodypack Transmitter requires a TA4F 4-pin mini-XLR female connector for connection to a wireless bodypack transmitter. You will want to use the Shure UL4 UniPlex Cardioid Subminiature Lavalier Microphone for Bodypack Transmitter - Black, TA4F (B&H # SHUL4BCMTQGA) for connection to the Shure SLXD1 Transmitter.

Q: 8. Can you recommend a preamp/power supply for this mic? I don't need a mixer as I plan to feed the mic into an ATEM mini with an adapter

A: You can use the Rolls MP13 Mini-Mic Preamp (B&H # ROMP13) to power the Audio-Technica U851Rb Cardioid Condenser Boundary Microphone, then use an XLR female to 3.5mm TRS male cable like the Kopul XRSM 3-Pin XLR Female to 3.5mm RA Stereo Mini-Plug Cable - 3' (B&H # KOXRSM03B) to connect the output from the MP13 to the 3.5mm TRS input on the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini HDMI Switcher.

Q: 9. Is the Beta91A manufactured in Mexico or China ?

A: The Shure Beta 91A Boundary Microphone is manufactured in Mexico.

Q: 10. Can this be compatable with any Shure wireless reciver like the BLX24?

A: The Shure ULXD6/O Digital Wireless Omni Boundary Microphone Transmitter is compatible with Shure ULXD receivers only.

[0.55 lb] We use the mic in a room with about 30 other same mics for an interactive college classroom.

[Molded Plastic] Sounds great

[Molded Plastic] This is astoundingly good boundary mic for $. Much more solid, heavy, and elegant (both the mic and the inline preamp unit) than I expected. Pattern and noise are just as advertised. For most conference room applications, the room noise (computers, AC, etc.) is going to be much louder than the self-noise of these mics. I will probably pick up more. This version does NOT have a mute button, BTW. B&H delivery and pricing were top notch, per usual!

[0.55 lb] Never could get a full rich natural sound until we installed this mic. It is used for live worship. Really allows for clear separation of tones without losing the natural sound of the piano.

[Molded Plastic] I vertically mounted this mic on a wall in a medical treatment classroom. It was to be used to hear conversation and responses by an observer in an adjoining area. I needed something unobtrusive and with enough sensitivity to provide clear audio, but without too much ambient noise. The MX391 is small, and the white color helps it to become almost invisible on the wall. Being mounted above the heads of the students and staff, the cardioid pickup pattern works great and helps to reject sound reflection from the ceiling. I had to build a TA4M extension cable in order to reach a wall mounted I/O plate, and another TA4F cable to reach the preamp, which I mounted beneath a countertop at the audio mixer in the adjoining room, but everything worked well. I've been using Shure products for many years, and they have never let me down.

[Molded Plastic] I use this microphone when I am shooting more then two on screen talents. It eliminates the need to mic each person individually and from having to precisely position a boom mic. I have used this mic to record 3 and four people sitting around a table and was very happy with the quality of the sound. Obviously, the person closest to the mic sounds the best but the quality of the people the furthest from the mic was very good with very minimal fall off. I would highly recommend this mic.

[0.55 lb] . We use this PZM mic to record conferences. . The great part about it is that the audio range can be modified from cariod to directional - can come in handy for large meetings. . This mic seems to handle ambient noise better than the average PZM . Not so great, seems a little complicated to change auiod range.
