Simple five elements, three groups Heliar optical design is used to offer a classic image quality with strong color reproduction and fine sharpness.

Exterior of the lens is designed to match some of the earliest Voigtlander lenses from the 19th century and features an all-metal build for durability.

Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 2.3' away, and the lens will couple to rangefinder mechanisms for focusing accuracy.

The optical design of this lens is optimized for use with rangefinder-linked digital and film cameras, but it is also expected to be used with mirrorless digital cameras using a mount adapter and is linked to rangefinders.

A screw-in type lens hood is included to protect the front element from stray light while shooting, and a dedicated metal front lens cap is also provided to guard the lens while not in use.

10-blade aperture contributes to pleasing out-of-focus areas and well-defined sunstars.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens at its shortest (when it's pictured super compact) at infinity and only extend at close focus? Or does it need to be extended to align the elements regardless of focus distance?

A: The lens in its collapsed position is very short. However, to be used it must be extended and locked into position. It is not usable when collapsed. The lens itself cannot focus without a focusing mount/adapter to use it on the Sony E-mount. The adapter focuses by rotating its helicoid, which will be at the shortest position when focused at infinity. The combination, when in use, is not much shorter than, say, the Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4. The real advantage of this lens is that it is very compact for transport when collapsed. It is, in addition, extraordinarily sharp!

Q: 2. Does this work with the Techart Pro VII? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1722621-REG/techart_pro_lm_ea9_leica_m_mount_le

A: Yes, the Voigtlander VM 40mm f/2.8 Heliar Lens for Sony E-Mount should be compatible for use with the Techart PRO Leica M-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Autofocus Adapter (Version II).

Q: 3. Now that there are closed-focus adapter with helicoid for Z-mount, can I use this lens on a Nikon Z7?

A: Unfortunately, this lens is only compatible with the Sony E mount.

Q: 4. I have fuji xt4 and leica m adapter ring for it. will this lens work? Will the fully rotating function be an issue for adapter?

A: Yes, the Voigtlander Heliar 40mm f/2.8 Aspherical Lens will be able to work fully on a Leica M-Mount adapter on the FUJIFILM X-T4 Mirrorless Camera.

Q: 5. If I use the voitlander 40 mm heliar lens with the voitlander close-up adapter on my Sony A7ii, will I be able to determine proper exposure by what I see through the viewfinder just like I would if I were using a Sony lens, or will I have to use a hand held light meter?

A: An external light meter wouldn't hurt the case, but you would be able to meter exposure through the camera as well.

Q: 6. can this be adapted to fuji x mount?

A: Yes, the Voigtlander VM 40mm f/2.8 Heliar Lens for Sony E-Mount can be used on a Fujifilm X mount camera by using adapters like these: https://bhpho.to/3veEoYX.

Q: 7. Not directly related to the product but why suddenly Voigtlander restricted all shipping to Australia? I've just about to buy this lens ;___;

A: Unfortunately, I do not have any specifics regarding your inquiry. Due to export regulations and/or manufacturer restrictions,k we are unable to export certain items outside the United States. In the case of Voigtlander items, Voigtlander products cannot be shipped outside the United States to many countries; the shipping restriction is not solely for Australia. I apologize for the inconvenience in this matter. (You could still visit the United States and purchase the lens in our NYC Superstore and bring it back home with you!)

Q: 8. is it possible to use this lens on a Leica M9 & M6 ?How will I focus ? the adaptor will be useless on the Leica, will it?

A: NO.even though it is an M- mountlense it is designed specificallyto work with the close focus adapterwhis is designed for sony E-mount camerayou can still attach the lens to your leica but you can only take pictures with an infinity focus and no way of adjusting it

Q: 9. are there any other options for the adapter, or is the Voigtlander VM-E the only one?

A: There are other companies offer M to E helicoid adaptors. Shoten is the only one that comes to mind. Supposedly quite a bit cheaper, 6mm extension instead of 4mm of the Voigtlander and no infinity lock.I have read good things about it but, I bought the Voigtlander to use the 40mm on my a6000 and have no reason to compare alternatives... yet.

Q: 10. Could I mount this lens on my Nikon Z6 - and be able to focus on other than infinity - using the "KIPON Lens Mount Adapter for Leica M-Mount Lens with Helicoid to Nikon Z-Mount Camera" adapter?

A: Yes you should be able to mount this lens using the Kipon Leica M to Nikon Z adapter since this is an M mount lens.

[34 mm (Front)] Fiddly aperture selection - it moves with the focus ring - but the rest of the lens is so good. Super tiny which makes it a joy to carry around and use. Sharp. Great flare resistance. Excellent jewel like build.

Looks fantastic on a black paint Leica M!

[10] This is one of my least expensive lenses. It might be my least expensive lens. Yet, at mid-range aperture, it is objectively the sharpest lens I have. I mean it is sharp clear and sharp. Other than it's design and it's clarity, there is nothing really special about the colors or the rendering. It's just sharp as a razor. I get better results in general using manual focus rangefinder lenses on my a7rii than any of the crazy huge autofocus lenses. I rarely even attach an auto lens to my camera anymore.

[34 mm (Front)] Really very sharp with typical excellent Voightlander color. I use this along with the Voightlander 15mm f/4.5 as Leica has no equivalent. They suffer nothing in the comparison.

[Manual Focus] This lens now lives on my Sony a7. This quality of this lens is simply amazing. I have been using Leica's for 60 years and this lens is as sharp and the rendering is as beautifully defined as my older Summicron. Actually, it reminds me of the excellent 50mm Elmar lenses. I use this lens with the voigtlander close focus adapter-which is needed to focus the lens. I also have set up my Sony to use The Clear zoom. I have found that the introduction of pixels into the image with this lens - when pushed to 80mm is also amazingly excellent. Much has been made about the lack of hyper focal distance marks on this lens. Just focus it. I do not consider this lens slow to use because I preset my aperture on the lens and the shutter on the camera. Then just enjoy!

[Leica M] This lens is super sharp and well made. I refer you to my B&H review of the Voigtlander VM-E Close Focus Adapter (which must be purchased to use this lens) for my additional comments. I'll repeat what I said, buy this lens before Voigtlander stops making it!

[f/2.8] Recently been given a Voigtlaender Vitomatic I so I could take some pictures for a trip, found it so good that I got more of their current products, with this lens being the last. It is a fantastic little lens for the Sony Alpha 7 and their amazing sensitivity. With the required adapter it is not cheap, but if You have one other M-mount lens optimized for digital, like a number of Voigtlaender VM Lenses than it makes a lot of sense. It seems completely void of distortion, chromatic aberration or vignetting. In my experience, lenses designed for a small opening are always better than a high speed lens stopped down to the same stop. Also this lens disciplines the process of taking pictures.

[Leica M] Had it for almost a month, I can tell it's perfect. I have 6-7 m mount lens such as leica 50 lux and noctilux, but I love this Voigtlander so far! It's so small and well-made so It will be a great pleasure to use it, the sharpness and quality is so good that it could fit my A7R4 perfectly. The tone, is not as film-like as leica lens but you can ask for more from a lens at this price.

[Manual Focus] A spectacularly sharp lens, even wide open, with a wonderfully dimensional effect in its rendering. Reminds me of the best offerings from Leica. Ability to collapse makes for an extremely compact and portable package, although the screw-in lens cap on the dome hood is a nuisance if you tend to keep your cap on in dusty conditions (use the conventional hood with the push-on cap at these times). The 40mm focal length makes this a great walking around lens when you don't want to carry more than one lens. Construction is old-school: solid, precise, all metal, and mates perfectly with the Voigtlander focusing adapter. No bells, no whistles; if you are the sort who prefers manual control of your camera and tend to work methodically, this lens will suit you well.
