Inspired by the famous Noct NIKKOR, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G Lens Reviewfrom Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G Lens Reviewis a unique prime that pairs the distinct slightly long focal length with a fast maximum aperture. The bright f/1.4 design enables working in difficult lighting conditions and also permits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. In regard to the optics, a pair of aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion, spherical aberrations, and comatic aberrations to realize sharp, clear image quality throughout the aperture range. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor provides fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Slightly longer-than-normal prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however is also compatible with DX models where it provides an 87mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus techniques.

Two aspherical elements are used to greatly reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness, clarity, and accurate rendering. Additionally, the optical design has also been optimized for shooting at wider apertures, including f/1.4, and minimizes comatic aberrations and ensures even sharpness across the frame.

Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What's this items model number? Is there a difference between model numbers, or are they all the same? What do you know about the model number 543287? ... Is that this items model number?

A: The Nikon product number for the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G lens is 2180. The number that you provided is likely the serial number of the particular lens that you have.

Q: 2. Is this lens adaptable without electrical contacts, i.e. is it manually focusable and is there an aperture lever on the mount?

A: No.

Q: 3. I read somewhere that this lens was made for a crop sensor; my question is....are there any reviews of this lens on a crop sensor? I have the Nikon D7000 and am trying to find a sharp lens with great bokeh for portraits, and similar to the 85mm on a full frame. Any suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated.

A: This lens is an FX type lens, which means it is originally designed to be used on both Full-frame and crop-sensor cameras. I do not have any links to cite for you showing examples of it used on the D7000, but it is a very sharp lens with great shallow depth of field for your portrait work. It is one I would definitely recommend for your D7000 if you want something in the 85mm range. This lens is based on an original design of an early Nikon 58mm lens, and they improved upon it for use on DSLRs of both formats.

Q: 4. I currently have the Nikon 50mm 1.8G. Should I consider the upgrade?

A: It depends. Nikon 50mm/F1.4G certainly is a great fast lens. Your 50mm/F1.8G is a not bad lens at all. Unless you do a lots of low lighting photography and the extra aperture can help you a bit. Otherwise, your 50mm/F1.8G should be good for most of situations. If you use aperture wide open all the time, F1.4 may help you. I found most time I do not shoot with F1.4.

Q: 5. Is this lens compatible with D300s?

A: The Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens is fully compatible with the D300s, yes.

Q: 6. Compatible with a D850?

A: Absolutely

Q: 7. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D5100?

A: Hi Rebecca,Yes, this lens compatible with all nikon's cameras.

Q: 8. I have a Nikon D7000 - Is this the best 50 mm Prime for that camera?

A: Remember the D7000 is a crop sensor therefore 50mm lens will be equivalent to about 75mm focal length which is nice for portraits. If you want to be in the 50mm range try the 35mm DX lens. I had one when I own a D7000. Fantastic lens!

Q: 9. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D200 and D300s?

A: The Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens is fully compatible with every Nikon DSRL, including the Nikon D200 and D300s.

Q: 10. Hello, is this lens compatible with my Nikon digital D5100 camera? Autofocus will work? Thanks

A: Yes; as the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens is a G series lens that uses Nikon's AF-S Silent Wave Motor, it is fully compatible and will autofocus when used on the Nikon D5100 DSLR camera.

[Nikon F] For years I've been using the truly terrible Nikon 50mm 1.4G and while I made it work for me I just was never happy with it. I've wanted a better 50-ish lens for years and here comes the 58mm 1.4G. I put my money where my mouth is and bought it and I'm very happy. I like the results and that's all that matters to me. It doesn't focus super quick in low light (at least on my D800) but most of my lenses aren't that quick and I use MF for those moments. This lens is pretty easy to hit focus with so long as you aren't trying to MF at 1.4 and my wife even noticed the differences between my former 50 and this new 58. It's lightweight which I think is nice as it still feels well built. I don't need to use a filter as the front element is so far down I'd have to drop my keys into it to scratch it. The hood is a hood so there's that. The bag that comes with it won't see the light of day so there's that as well. For me this is a cost v. value item. I'm getting more value out of it than I'm putting in with the cost. It's not cheap but nobody forced me to buy it either so cost/price is relative to each person.

[Full-Frame] I am really impressed with this lens. The design is flawless and the bokeh rivals zeiss (which I am a big fan of). The glass design is so beautifully crafted to give you a 3D look whilst using a wide open aperture. Tack sharp subject and pleasing background gives you a very intimate feel of the image.

[Nikon F] I used this lens while on a photography workshop in Yellowstone and loved the results of the images. This is the fastest lens in my bag.

[Full-Frame] This is one of the finest lenses by Nikon. For portrait and fashion work this lens is used the most.

[Nikon F] You hardly know it's on the camera! The balance in your hand is ideal. Perfect for vertical panoramas when your background needs a little more weight. Sharp, silent, and fast. Larger sensors demand better glass.

[Autofocus] Okay, I really did quite of bit of studying on this lens, read about what seemed to be a hundred reviews, you tube videos. Spoke to fellow photographers, and finally after about 3 weeks took the plunge. I bought this lens for special photography, specially people portraits, for indoor and outdoor. Bokeh on my copy is completely equal to my Nikons 24, 35, 85, and now 58 1.4s, creamy buttery backgrounds, with that 3D look. First thing I did out of the box was fine tune it with my Nikon D4S, as I do with all my primes, mine needed a +18 fine tune, which is not unusual, my other primes are between +10 and +18. It is very sharp now, not the snappiest focus, but that's okay, the photographs this lens puts out between 1.4 and 2.8 are fabulous, doubt I will ever shoot it any narrower, to me, that's why I buy expensive primes, to shoot them wide open, or very close to it. I think this lens will be seeing it's share of time on my camera, and hopefully make me $$$$. If you're an experienced photographer, YES, I would recommend !

[f/1.4] I'd been looking at this lens for more than 10 years, since it came out. I always thought I'd only ever want the very sharpest lenses. Although I am yet to join the Mirrorless movement, all my research tells me that those lenses are in another league sharpness-wise. Between that realm and ever-improving smartphones, everything is going for pure resolution above all else, it seems. But I finally learned to start valuing the overall rendering of a photo as what compels me to take photos at all. With this lens, along with a few others (the 28 and 105 f1.4Es), the photos just seem more compelling and make me want to stare at them just that little bit extra, which I tend not to do with many photos. After using this and those other two, I think too that the Nano-coat really does give better colors, almost like a wider gamut. I also finally realized that Nikon might discontinue F-mount lenses any time now, so that pushed me to finally get this while still available. I'm glad I did!

[Autofocus] I have been on the fence for the Nikon 58mm f/1.4G lens for a while, but my only regret is that I didn't get it sooner. After some very minor AF tuning on my D750, it is by far my favorite lens. It is relatively lightweight, plenty sharp wide open and razor sharp stopped down a bit, and OMG the rendering is truly special.

[Autofocus] I read so much about this lens before buying it, I was ready for the disappointment in the first few images. NONSENSE! I shot a typical close focus subject at around f/1.4 or 1.8. in my home shortly after unboxing and wow! Sharpness where I wanted it and heavenly smooth bokeh everywhere else. In a couple days I did a full frame sharpness test at f/5.6 in my studio. Boom! Tack sharp everywhere. The only time I see any softness is at f/1.4 or 1.8 when close focused. That's when I want it! Perfect. The answer? Write The Check.

[Autofocus] Nope. This thing fits right in line with Nikon's outstanding 24, 35 & 85mm f1.4G lenses(IMHO). Enough said! ;-)
