Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can these be stacked, or is heat an issue?

A: The vents on the OWC 8TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive are located on the sides, and not the top of the drive, so you could potentially stack them, but dues to the shape of the drive and the nature of rotating HDDs, I would not advise it.

Q: 2. What is the read/write speed of the new 3.2 Generation 2? It states in the description the transfer speed is 1250/MB/s. However, here in the question and answer it states the read write speed is only around 400mb/s/ Curious as to which one is accurate for the read/write speed actually is for the 3.2?

A: USB 3.2 gen 1 supports up to 10Gbps (1250MB/s). The read and write speed will depend on several factors including the drives being used and the RAID mode being used. OWC mentions how they got those numbers on their website: Up to 1026MB/s sequential read/write performance with 2 x 1.0TB Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSDs in RAID 0 connected to a Windows 10 PC (GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-UD5 motherboard with 16GB RAM, Intel Core i5-6400 2.70GHz processor) running Crystal Disk Mark 7.0.0x64 (1GB test size, Q8T1). Up to 567MB/s sequential read/write performance with 2 x 16.0TB Seagate Exos X16 HDDs I. RAID 0 connected to 15-inch MacBook Pro 2018 (MacBookPro15,1) with 16GB RAM and 2.2GHz processor running AJA System Test (4K-Full resolution, 64GB file size, 10bit RGB codec, single file test). Performance will vary depending on drives and application used.

Q: 3. I have several FireWire drives. I want to mount one at a time to this drive to transfer content. I would need to use the USB port to connect to my Mac Mini to make this transfer with Carbon Copy Cloner

A: It is not possible to mount a FireWire drive connected to the OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive to a Mac over a USB host connection. In order to daisy chain a Firewire drive, you will need to connect the OWC Mercury Elite Pro to your Mac over Firewire.

Q: 4. SPECS says package weight is 3.635 ib. but Weight of drive is 0.13 ib /58 g. is that correct?

A: This was a web error and will be addressed by our web team shortly. Apologies for the mix up. This drive weighs 3.65 pounds.

Q: 5. Does this work on an OS 10.6 Apple?

A: It's an enclosure the OS that you use it with won't matter.

Q: 6. Can I connect my camcorder to transfer videos directly to this enclosure? My camcorder has a 1394 port.

A: If the camcorder is compatible with external drives, then yes, you will be able to connect the OWC 20TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive via the 1394B Firewire 800 port.

Q: 7. What are the minimum system requirements?

A: the OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive BH #OWCME3QH7T16 only requires that a host machine have a USB3, eSATA or Firewire 800 port to work.

Q: 8. is this compatible with M1 MAC?

A: The OWC 12TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive (USB 3.2 Gen 1) is compatible with a M1 Mac. Depending on the exact model you might need a USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter.

Q: 9. I want to use this as a storage drive and for backup of my photos on a Windows 8.1 pc with a capacity of 1.8 TB and only 620GB used now. Is this ready just to plug in and use? Easy to use?

A: You might need to change the RAID mode depending on your needs but the drive is easy to use.

Q: 10. What brand of hard disk drive comes with this unit? If it’s the Toshiba, I will purchase it. If Seagate, probably not.

A: Unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn't specify the brand of the drives include with the OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro USB 3.2 Gen 1 External Hard Drive. The brand may vary based on availability.

[LTO-8, LTO-9] Our small video agency recently upgraded our LTO drive to LTO-8 and started buying these tapes for our footage and project archives. The significant capacity increase with only marginal increase to cost per tape saves our company a lot of time and money. So far the tapes have been very reliable and performed well during archive and restoring. We will be buying plenty more in the future.

[1] I've used OWC SSDs before, and I bought another one to replace a Sandisk SSD that died after 4 years. Unlike other brands, 120GB is actually 120GB of usable space.

[8 to 90%] I got it to preserve the use of a 5.25 drive in a new PC case with no optical drive slot. (The drive has old firmware, that allows playing of UHD BluRay disks.)

I found the USB cable that came with it to be a bit short (24, 60cm). If you get a replacement, be sure to get the high bandwidth A/B type.

[5 to 95%] The drive enclosure is great for DVD drives less than 7 inches. I would higly recomend it to anyone needing a high quality DVD drive enclosure.

[200 W] Solid, metal build, relatively easy to put together, no struggles.

Has rubber parts to help with vibration and all parts are snug but not difficult to work with.

After hours of use it goes from noticeably cool to lukewarm.

[Desktop] While there are many SSD's on the market, the OWC line of drives are special because they offer a no-fuss way to give your Mac the speed of a solid state drive. What makes the OWC SSD's different is it doesn't need TRIM support, meaning you don't have to use a workaround to get the best performance from this drive like you would another brand SSD.

[8 to 90%] Video Media storage with a Mac Studio Ultra. Maximizing storage speeds with NVME in RAID 0, though heatsinks might improve it a bit further. Speed tests indicate it can handle up to some types of 12K footage. Cruising through multicam 4K footage in conjunction with NVME media cache. SoftRAID keeps asking for the activation code for some reason. OWC needs to fix that. Only 2 months in but working as advertised so far.
