Styled in a finish dubbed "raw" by the manufacturers, the Genelec 8331 is a point-source, near-field monitor for pro-audio applications. It features a coaxial design, which houses its midrange driver, treble tweeter, and dual 5.1” woofers in one location, thereby aligning their acoustical axes and ensuring an accurate point of sonic radiation. The monitor can accept both analog and digital AES/EBU signals from separate XLR jacks, using Intelligent Signal Sensing technology (ISS) to detect automatically what kind of audio is being fed into the monitor.

To coordinate multiple 8331s, you can make use of Genelec’s GLM software to tune your monitor to your room, facilitate and coordinate the daisy-chaining of monitors, override the ISS function, and more. Routing is accomplished by means of a few Cat5 cables and a GLM adapter, which is available separately. You’ll note that two RJ45s are provided for GLM connectivity. An XLR output jack is also on hand for sending identical copies of incoming AES/EBU signals to other monitors.

DIP switches and a rotary control for level are offered on the rear of the monitor for offline use. Here, you’ll also find a reflex port to better direct low-end energy. An Iso-Pod stand is included to facilitate isolation from aurally deleterious surfaces. Other assets, such as the 8331’s acoustically concealed woofers, minimum diffraction coaxial construction, and a proprietary waveguide, are further expounded upon in the features section.

GLM, a proprietary software available free from Genelec, allows you to coordinate, equalize, and otherwise manage your 8331 to its fullest potential.

The 8331's audio inputs are designed to integrate easily into all professional environments, supporting balanced, line-level analog and AES/EBU-format digital signals. Analog input is selected when the AES/EBU signal input is not connected. The AES/EBU-format digital audio input is selected automatically when a valid digital audio signal is present. Automatic audio signal input selection can be overridden, however, when the 8331 is controlled by a GLM network, enabling flexible selection of either input. On the output side, an XLR connector passes through an unaltered copy of the incoming AES/EBU signal, enabling daisy-chaining of up to four monitors. The proper digital channel can be selected using DIP switches, or via GLM.

The minimum-diffraction coaxial driver is comprised of a powerful midrange element combined with a tweeter that extends to ultrasonic frequencies. This arrangement minimizes or downright eliminates acoustic the diffraction sources typically found in coaxial drivers, engendering a flat frequency response both on the acoustical axis and at all off-axis points of listening. The 8331 may be oriented either horizontally or vertically, and is intended for near-field listening where the influences of the room can be minimized as much as possible. Typical distances can vary from approximately three to ten feet, depending on room size and SPL requirements.

The 8331 has an uncharacteristically large directivity-control waveguide extending over the whole front face of the enclosure. The midrange driver cone also forms a part of the directivity-control waveguide for the tweeter. From behind the waveguide, two woofers radiate audio through two openings in the enclosure front. This design enables directivity control of all audio frequencies down to the low bass frequencies.

SAM technology can improve the reliability and accuracy of these monitors, providing several parametric notch and shelving filters that can be tuned automatically in concert with GLM software, thus compensating for colorations generated by room acoustics. This enables SAM monitors to sound neutral and achieve accurate imaging in most acoustical environments.

[110 dB (Peak)] I sold my Barefoot Footprint 01 for this sub and a pair of 8330A and 7350A sub and I couldn't be happier! Let me explain why I made this decision.
In the recent months, Sonarworks' SoundID Reference has gotten increasingly unreliable on my M1 Max Mac to the point of constantly having to troubleshoot it. On top of that, the Barefoots have shown some issues producing accurate low end in my small-ish mixing space and I knew that having an independent sub will help a great deal with low-end precision.

Another big deal is GLM, Genelec's own speaker calibration and management system that costs pretty much the same as SoundID BUT is natively integrated in the speakers, gets free updates, allows for MIDI yard stream deck control, and pretty much means that you'll NEVER need a monitor controller again - unless you're planning to get another pair of speakers that aren't part of Genelec's SAM series.

This added value and piece of mind, Genelec's sustainability approach, the 8330s having lower overall distortion than the Footprints, and my low-end now extending all the way to 21 Hz at -1 dB (almost an extra octave compared to the Footprints) all mean that this is pretty much as good as it gets for a sub $4k set of speakers.

the 7350 does an awesome job at extending the 8330A's low-end without making itself known and the automatic phase alignment, variable bass mgmt frequency, GLM, and 7+LFE channel bass management I/O are unmatched at this price.

The ultimate cherry on top is that all the integrated technologies mean that the eventual upgrade to a Dolby Atmos system just means getting more speakers... no extra subs, monitor controllers, etc. My wallet sure appreciates the GLM ecosystem

[19.035 lb] Buy it. You won't regret it. For playback these are wonderful. Sounds so clear and for well produced/mixed music you hear everything. Vice versa for things that aren't. You hear everything. I still use headphones to properly mix/edit with.

[< 0.5% / 85 dB] I have it setup with my 8341a monitors and they work great. Really opens up the sound space and fills in dips on the freq of the 8341a. You can calibrate it with cross over at 100hz and using symmetrical eq. Before using this setting I didn't realize how congested it sounded by comparison. Must have sub if you are using genelecs with glm. Without it, you are missing a ton of sound, and really you will hear it wimpy without it if you try to go back without a sub.

[19.035 lb] Yes, Genelec are pricey and yet, it's difficult to compare them to any other studio monitor.
The clarity and consistency of their reproduction is overwhelming.
I notice now details in songs I heard for many years, that I never noticed before.
Highly recommended.

[45 Hz to 37 kHz] Yes, it was and additional considerable investment.
But this subwoofer with my 8330a work in total harmony.
Whether you use the digital or analog inputs they both sound fantastic.
Highly recommended.

[< 0.5% / 85 dB] Perhaps shameful, but I don't use these to monitor. I just wanted something for a second (desktop) system that would be good enough for me to give up head phones for general listening, and keep me from a frustrating return. I considered these for several months before making the deal at B&H. Maybe overkill, but I'm a former musician, and I know correct timbre, distortion effects, etc., and that's what I expect from playback. I've had these for six months. I run them with the desktop bass roll-off, and I have no complaints; only praise. The detail, accuracy and lack of fatigue means they get a lot of use. I just upgraded my DAC, and I can say that these monitors, like any real transducer, are very responsive to better source electronics. The driver grilles are a necessity, IMO, and contributed to my decision to go with Genelec over Focal, or the Gene 040's, as did the auto-off feature. This is just a great product, and, like most great products, comes at a commensorate price. Still considering a sub option, as a sub always enlarges the apparent sound field of a near field, or any smaller-driver speaker system, in a (usually) spectacular fashion. I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied with the designed capabilities of this monitor.

[19.035 lb] My studio is small, so this is plenty of low end to complement my 8320A tops. The extension down to 22 Hz helps me clean up LF content I wouldn't have noticed on my old monitors. GLM is fun and easy to use. My latest mixes are holding up really well out in the wild!
