Styled in a finish dubbed "raw" by this item's manufacturers, the Genelec 8341A is a point-source monitor meant for near-field applications in the realm of pro audio. It features a coaxial design which nestles driver and tweeter—as well as two 6.6” woofers—in one location, thus aligning their acoustical axes, and securing an accurate point of sonic radiation. It’s also worth noting the 8341A’s Intelligent Signal Sensing technology, as well as the connections this technology affords you: ISS automatically detects whether analog or digital sources are being run into the monitor and allows the speaker to produce sound accordingly. To put it another way, one XLR input accepts analog signals, the other XLR takes AES/EBU, and the monitor itself automatically selects the input source.

Unless you don’t want it to, in which case you can make use of Genelec’s GLM software, which can override the automated selecting of signal. It can also help you tune the monitor to your room and facilitate and coordinate daisy-chaining monitors. To make use of the GLM software, you’ll need, at minimum, Cat5 cables for routing to/from the monitor to a GLM adapter (available separately). You’ll note that RJ45 ports are provided for this very purpose. An XLR output jack is also on hand for sending identical copies of incoming AES/EBU signals to other monitors.

For standalone usage, DIP switches and a rotary control for level are offered on the rear of the monitor. Here, you’ll also find a reflex port to better direct low-end energy. An Iso-Pod stand is included to facilitate isolation from aurally deleterious surfaces. Other assets, such as the 8341A’s acoustically concealed woofers, minimum diffraction coaxial construction, and proprietary waveguide, are further expounded upon in the features section.

GLM, a proprietary software available free from Genelec, allows you to coordinate, equalize, and otherwise manage your 8341A to its fullest potential.

The 8341A's audio inputs are designed to integrate easily into all professional environments, supporting balanced, line-level analog and AES/EBU-format digital signal. Analog input is selected when the AES/EBU input is not connected. The AES/EBU format digital audio input is selected automatically when a valid digital audio signal is present. Automatic audio signal input selection can be overridden, however, when the 8341A is controlled by a GLM network, enabling flexible selection of either input. On the output side, an XLR connecter outputs an unaltered copy of the incoming AES/EBU signal, enabling daisy-chaining of up to four monitors. The proper digital channel can be selected using DIP switches or via GLM.

The minimum-diffraction coaxial driver is comprised of a midrange element combined with a tweeter that extends to ultrasonic frequencies. This arrangement minimizes or eliminates acoustic diffraction sources typically found in coaxial drivers, engendering a flat frequency response both on the acoustical axis and at all off-axis points of listening. The 8341A may be oriented either horizontally or vertically, and is intended for near-field listening where the influences of the room can be minimized as much as possible. Typical distances can vary from approximately three to ten feet, depending on room size and SPL requirements.

The 8341A has an uncharacteristically large directivity-control waveguide extending over the whole front face of the enclosure. The midrange driver cone also forms a part of the directivity-control waveguide for the tweeter. From behind the waveguide, two woofers radiate audio through two openings in the enclosure front. This design enables directivity control of all audio frequencies down to the low bass.

SAM technology can improve the reliability and accuracy of these monitors, providing several parametric notch and shelving filters that can be tuned automatically in concert with GLM software, thus compensating for coloration generated by room acoustics. This enables SAM monitors to sound neutral and achieve accurate imaging in most acoustical environments.

[Raw Silver] I am about 8 months in with a pair of 8020D and I know I can rely on the quality and hopefully durability will be great as well.

[Raw Silver] Very accurate and neutral near-field monitors with enormous dynamic range. Perfect for hi-res audio playback as well as recording monitoring. Built in and very clever sound isolation mounts that, in most cases, eliminate the need for third-party additions. Rear panel equalization settings accommodates most environments.

[Raw Silver] Upgraded from 8040A with auto stand by feature. Practically the same. Very sturdy. Great for tracking (recording) and editing but not for mixing (as with any near-field out there)

[Raw Silver] I bought these Genelecs because I wanted to a pair of monitors that wouldn't color the content I listen too. The 8020Ds do that for me. I prefer the raw finish to the normal black finish as it complements my desk setup. At first I was hesitant about the finish, but after I saw them in person and set them up on my desk, I was very happy with the choice. I have them on K&M 26772 small desktop stands which fit them nicely.

[0.05%] Purchased a pair of 8020D to sit atop my digital piano / keyboard for practice with virtual piano from the computer. The design, shape and integrated stand give it a smaller feel than its actual size. I wanted something that didn't look large, imposing, or boxy. At first I tried the smaller 8010s, but they are so diminutive that it felt a bit wrong having such small monitors. Also for playing loud the 8010s are at the top of their ability. These 8020D are a bit larger than the 8010 but still small enough for my needs. The 3inch driver is twice the size (area) of the 8010, its twice as powerful, and the bass response is significantly better. Fantastic sound.

Connected to my audio interface by balanced XLR. 8020D manual explicitly states you can connect to unbalanced line out by using the appropriate cable, and there is an input gain adjustment to accommodate different line levels. Dip switches allow tuning base to work with the room and desktop acoustics, and both are useful in my application. I apply a little eq in my DAW to flatten out for room resonance (which is easy to tune by ear as you play up and down the piano). There are other speakers that have their own digital processing to tune themselves to your room acoustics. But for playing piano live I didn't want that feature, because it adds more latency.

Good solo piano sound is hard because lumps in the frequency response make certain notes stand out and distract, there aren't other instruments in the mix to hide flaws, and poor sound can put one off playing. Headphones are great for practice too, but the experience of playing out loud is different. Its worth spending on the monitors. These are great.

[Aluminum] I have several kinds of genelecs ((3) 8030B with a 7050 sub) and have used these products for over 20 years. My studio changed from 5.1 to 7.1. I had 8020Cs as my rear speakers. I added these 8020D's. There are slight differences, like the volume is on the back and needs a Greenie to adjust. A bit more power, but for the most part, hook them up, tweak the room and go.

[Aluminum] My studio is small, so this is plenty of low end to complement my 8320A tops. The extension down to 22 Hz helps me clean up LF content I wouldn't have noticed on my old monitors. GLM is fun and easy to use. My latest mixes are holding up really well out in the wild!

[Raw Silver] Buy it. You won't regret it. For playback these are wonderful. Sounds so clear and for well produced/mixed music you hear everything. Vice versa for things that aren't. You hear everything. I still use headphones to properly mix/edit with.

[26.21 lb] Perhaps shameful, but I don't use these to monitor. I just wanted something for a second (desktop) system that would be good enough for me to give up head phones for general listening, and keep me from a frustrating return. I considered these for several months before making the deal at B&H. Maybe overkill, but I'm a former musician, and I know correct timbre, distortion effects, etc., and that's what I expect from playback. I've had these for six months. I run them with the desktop bass roll-off, and I have no complaints; only praise. The detail, accuracy and lack of fatigue means they get a lot of use. I just upgraded my DAC, and I can say that these monitors, like any real transducer, are very responsive to better source electronics. The driver grilles are a necessity, IMO, and contributed to my decision to go with Genelec over Focal, or the Gene 040's, as did the auto-off feature. This is just a great product, and, like most great products, comes at a commensorate price. Still considering a sub option, as a sub always enlarges the apparent sound field of a near field, or any smaller-driver speaker system, in a (usually) spectacular fashion. I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied with the designed capabilities of this monitor.

[Single Monitor] I sold my Barefoot Footprint 01 for this sub and a pair of 8330A and 7350A sub and I couldn't be happier! Let me explain why I made this decision.
In the recent months, Sonarworks' SoundID Reference has gotten increasingly unreliable on my M1 Max Mac to the point of constantly having to troubleshoot it. On top of that, the Barefoots have shown some issues producing accurate low end in my small-ish mixing space and I knew that having an independent sub will help a great deal with low-end precision.

Another big deal is GLM, Genelec's own speaker calibration and management system that costs pretty much the same as SoundID BUT is natively integrated in the speakers, gets free updates, allows for MIDI yard stream deck control, and pretty much means that you'll NEVER need a monitor controller again - unless you're planning to get another pair of speakers that aren't part of Genelec's SAM series.

This added value and piece of mind, Genelec's sustainability approach, the 8330s having lower overall distortion than the Footprints, and my low-end now extending all the way to 21 Hz at -1 dB (almost an extra octave compared to the Footprints) all mean that this is pretty much as good as it gets for a sub $4k set of speakers.

the 7350 does an awesome job at extending the 8330A's low-end without making itself known and the automatic phase alignment, variable bass mgmt frequency, GLM, and 7+LFE channel bass management I/O are unmatched at this price.

The ultimate cherry on top is that all the integrated technologies mean that the eventual upgrade to a Dolby Atmos system just means getting more speakers... no extra subs, monitor controllers, etc. My wallet sure appreciates the GLM ecosystem
