Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can you plug 3.5mm into camera and also plugin usb for charging (and not use 3.5mm as monitor)?

A: Yes, the 3.5mm output jack on the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone can be connected to the mic input on a camera while the USB-C output is connected to a portable USB power bank for charging. You should not use a USB wall plug for charging or connect the mic to a computer for charging while using the 3.5mm output for recording to a camera as there can be noise introduced into the audio signal generated by the electrical line that will be recorded by the camera.

Q: 2. How is the shielding on this mic? My original Rode Video Mic Pro picks up RF spray from my Hollyland transmitter.

A: From reviews of the VideoMic NTG, it seems that the shielding is improved over other models. Most reviews state that RF interference has not been a problem.

Q: 3. what type power is needed for the operation? (5V, 48V)

A: The RODE VideoMic NTG runs off of its internal rechargeable battery. It can also run off of 2.5v plug-in power or USB bus power.

Q: 4. Does it matter if you use USB 2.0, 3.0, or 3.1?

A: The Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone is functional for use with all current USB generation connections.

Q: 5. Is this mic suitable for capturing bird calls outdoors and, if so, what would be its useful range?

A: The Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Shotgun Microphone can be used for capturing bird calls outdoors. The optimum operating distance will vary depending on the environment. The mic is very directional and it is designed to pick up sounds from directly in front. In a quiet environment it will do a better job of picking up sounds that are further away. If there is a fair amount of noise in the background, you will be able to focus in on the sounds that are up to about 6 feet away most clearly. A good way to estimate what the mic will pick up is to use your ears and if your ears can hear the sound clearly, the mic should be able to hear similarly when pointed in that direction. If your camera has a headphone output you can use headphones to monitor the audio while recording.

Q: 6. Will this work on an iPhone if connected to a lighting cable adapter?

A: Yes, per Rode you can use the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm adapter.

Q: 7. I use many Rode products and love them. I have the VideoMic NTG and wonder if there is a work around so that I can monitor my video recordings from my Sony 6400 camera. The camera does not have a headphone jack for this and the NTG doesn't have one either for monitoring video recording. Is there perhaps a two out jack where headphones can be plugged into one of the outs and the recording into the camera in the other one? This would be the final thing to make the NTG a mic that can be used by filmmakers.

A: In the scenario described, because the camera does not have a headphone jack, there is no real way to monitor audio recorded into the Sony a6400 Mirrorless Camera from the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone, or any microphone for that matter. Because the connection on the camera is input only, a splitter type adapter would not function to provide a headphone output connection.

Q: 8. for older Android devices, is there a usb-c to 3.5mm adapter available?

A: Unfortunately, you cannot convert the digital USB-C output to a 3.5mm TRRS analog connection to make this mic work with other smartphones. I would recommend a mic with a 3.5mm TRRS connection, such as the Comica Audio CVM-VM10-K1 Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone with Grip Handle for Smartphones, BH #COCVMVM10K1.

Q: 9. I can tell that the reader has a USB on one side, but is the phone connection side a Micro-USB or a USB-C connector?

A: One side of the Browning Trail Camera SD Card Reader for Android, is a USB Type A connector., the other side is a Micro USB connector.

Q: 10. Can I mount this on a pistol grip?

A: Yes, the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone can be mounted on a pistol grip.

[Aluminum] I purchased the FLIR one Pro LT and have been using it for a couple of days in my house. I mainly got it to inspect the parts of my house where it's hottest/coldest (season dependent) and has already helped me identify the culprit areas that I'm now getting insulation installed to mitigate.

The only thing I'd like to see added to the mobile app, iOS in my case, is that the thermal range bar is exported when an image is was taken to add further add context to the image. People that are shown the images always ask what the range of colors means.

[500 mW] Easy set up. Worked right off the bat and saw birds in the trees, deer many yards away, and lots of mice in the field. Fun to use.

[7 x 4.9 x 2.7"] Pro level build quality at a very reasonable price. I use it for power amplifier diagnostics, but it seems to have unlimited uses. Very well designed and useful device.

[Aluminum] I bought this device for birding, specifically looking for owls at night. Some of the top thermal scopes cost upwards of $4k. The problem is, they are clearly marked as Export Controlled. I don't want to get into any trouble with those. This little plug-in camera cost only $400. So I decided to give it a try. I brought it to Guatemala a few days ago, hooked up with an old Pixel 3A phone, it worked great, far better than I expected. I found an owl at night perched silently behind our cabin on my second night there. I could see the red-hot owl based on the body shape. Even smaller birds can show up as hotspots at night. Definitely worth the $$$.

[0.605 lb] Great unit to see heat signatures of all kind. I have used it in house and the woods. The other night in complete darkness my dog was going crazy by the fence. I used it and seen a rabbit tantalizing him.

[Aluminum] Easy to set up and holds the phone securely. Wish it came with a case or it collapsed easily.
