Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If I do not want to use the included hood, will a standard Sony 49mm lens cap fit on this lens directly?

A: I just looked at my lens and I can't see any reason why any 49mm lens cap wouldn't fit. I actually like the little lens hood that comes with the lens because it protects the lens from fingerprints and such without adding much length to the lens. I often take only that lens on the camera when I want to be unencumbered by gear, and I usually don't bother with the little lens cap that goes on the hood.

Q: 2. I've lost my lens cap for this lens. It's the small lens cap that fits on the lens hood. Do you have replacements in stock?

A: Unfortunately, we do not carry a replacement ALC-SH129 Lens Hood. For this, your best bet would likely be to contact Sony directly. Otherwise, you could look at a generic 49mm lens hood. Q: 3. How does the autofocus on this lens go with video modes on the a7 series? Hoping to use this on my a7Sii and Movi without having to stop down to get a manageable depth of field. Would be nice to keep it shallow but have the auto focus track walking talent for me rather than trying to keep them in the focal plane!

A: I use this lens with the A7R, mostly for still photography. However, on the rare occasions when I do shoot movies, the auto focus seems to work very well. Hope this helps.

Q: 4. I'm going to purchase this lens for my Sony A7 so I'll have a lightweight small lens that I can have while skiing. For bright snow pictures would you suggest a circular polarizer filter and if so which one is the best?

A: A circular polarizer can be a good option for skiing, as it will darken your exposure by two stops. For a great choice, I suggest the B+W 49mm circular polarizer http://bhpho.to/1DXAFty. Should you want to darken by more than two stops, another option you can try is using a variable neutral density filter, such as the following made by Rodenstock: http://bhpho.to/1DXAWwJ

Q: 5. I have an a7rii. Will eye auto-focus work with this lens?

A: This is an extremely clear and beautiful lens and it works great for face detection

Q: 6. No image stabilization? Do the Alpha 7 and 7R, the cameras this lens is intended for, come with built-in image stabilization?

A: No, the new A7 and A7r models do not have stabilization built into them. Going forward with this system Sony will be offering lenses with the stabilization built into them. This particular one does not, but there will be models introduced within the next year to two years which do.

Q: 7. is FE lens's focus ring mechanical or by-wire? many small body lenses such as m43 and fuji use by-wire focus, once the circuit is broken, the lens can no longer be used in any way.

A: This Sony lens has a mechanical focus ring.

Q: 8. Will this lens work with the Sony A6300?

A: Yes, however you will have a field of view of a 52mm lens when you look through the viewfinder.

Q: 9. Does any part of the outside of this lens move when it is auto focused by the camera, i.e. does the manual focus ring move when it is auto focused or does the front element move in/out or turn? How well is the lens weather sealed?

A: No part of the outside of this lens moves during autofocusing -- neither the front element nor the manual focus ring. The only movement is internal. I cannot speak to the weather sealing.

Q: 10. where are these lenses made?

A: According to the information we have, our current inventories Country of Origin is China. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

[Full-Frame] I use this lens with my A7s, and it's my first autofocusing lens. In fact, it's my first lens that does anything automatically for that matter. I put my 'old school' pride aside and committed myself to learning my new camera and new lens. Truth be told, I love it. While yes there's a certain satisfaction with dialing in everything manually, you know what's more satisfying? Getting the shot. This lens is great and surprisingly versatile. I thought I might get frustrated with 2.8, hoping for something faster, but then forgot that the A7s makes up for it with it's performance at high ISO's, so it's sort of a moot point. Also, the size of the lens is PERFECT for the camera, so I wouldn't compromise the size for an extra stop of light. It's really a great lens, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a 35mm lens.

[0.12x] Initially I was skeptical about the true value of this lens. Ordinarily a fan of fast lenses, I struggled with the price tag. It seemed steep even for a Zeiss... until I saw the results. This lens is absurdly sharp, even wide open. There is some distortion, but it's easily correctable (and personally I think it gives the images a little more character!) It delivers the usual Zeiss buttery-smooth bokeh. Even the most distracting background dissolves into a mush of colors, giving excellent subject isolation wide open. Its convenient size and stunning quality means it spends more time on my Sony a7R than most. With this lens, the a7R is small enough to toss in a jacket pocket and carry everywhere. Truly an amazing combo to have with you at all times, and I would highly recommend it. At f/2.8 it isn't great in low light, although the ISO performance of cameras like the a7 and a7R do a lot to bridge that gap. Construction involves some plastic, but it's high quality and feels very durable. Oh, and it's weather sealed, too. Even better!

[0.12x] I got this lens for a sony A7. Great lens. Sharp and all the rest. Also allows for autofocus during video which is a plus. The autofocus is a little slow but for slow motion shots it works well.

[62°] The lens is excellent. I use the lens with the A7II. It's very compact and the hood is really nice. It really protects the lens while minimizing the extension from the lens. Being of Zeiss construction, it feels very well made. The focus ring has a nice stiffness to it. No complaints whatsoever.

[62°] This was the first lens I purchased for my Sony A7ii and I have not regretted it. It is sharp as a pin at almost every stop, showing a little bloom at it's smallest aperture. Easily one of the best lenses in my, admittedly non-pro, collection.

[Full-Frame] I bought this Sony Zeiss lens to use on my Sony A7R. I had been using my Canon lenses on this with an adapter. The lens makes a huge difference - it is very compact and light, focuses very fast and is extremely sharp. I can recommend this heartily to anyone who likes fixed focal length lenses.

[Autofocus] Zeiss quality, light, sharp, small, priced about right, and native to your A7R system; what else could you ask for!!!
